A beer hall smack dab in the city center of Delft…read more They are notable in the sense that they have a wide variety of beer: - 14 beers on tap - 200 bottled beers from Belgium and the Netherlands. Their beer selection has depth because not only do they carry traditional Belgian beer (Westvleteren, Rochefort, Delirium, etc...) but they also carry Dutch beer from brewers big and small, from the well-established to the newer, smaller businesses. According to the bartender, although the Netherlands' beer history is not as well-known as Belgium, more people are starting to appreciate Dutch craft breweries, hence the prevalence of the newer Dutch brews in the bars. Take that, Heineken. (For the record, I didn't see Heineken on the menu). For those that are overwhelmed by the beer selection they offer a tasting menu of 6 pre-selected beers from their tap for €14. This amounts to 3 beers. Though I didn't have a taster myself, I appreciate the thought that came to it because it represents good depth in the tap list BUT there's also one German beer and Guinness. For both of my visits the bartenders were quite nice. One of them gave me a mini history lecture on the Dutch craft brewery scene. I am ashamed to admit that for both of my visits I had Belgian beer. But this bar is notable in that it was one of the first bars in the Netherlands to serve Belgian beer. I had a Delirium Tremens on tap and Rochefort 10 on the bottle. Both are excellent brews. In true fashion the beers are served in their respective glasses. - Of note is that they offer Westvleteren 12 for €13. This is a much more fair price for the bottle whereas if you go to Belgium the price is marked up significantly. Indoor and outdoor seating. Lots of smokers sitting outside. They also have a food menu if needed.

I did not sample anything from the small menu but the owner (?) did walk around with a tray of what I thought were biterballen but was infact not full of mystery meat at all but some Asian noodle, good and on the house as well :) So to say the least and enjoyable experience and already recommended to some American colleagues. :D

It's middle of the road music and lots of top 40 music, new and old (mostly old) Every favorite song by the likes of Nirvana, Bob Marley, Pearl Jam, Michael Jackson, etc is song and performed by a live band that knows how to generate energy. And one of the few places in town where sunday afternoons and sunday nights can actually be pretty good. Seventy-Seven (just call it 'Sev' if you want to blend in) is where Middelburgers learn to drink, fall in love, celebrate the birth of their children, come to to find old friends on christmas eve (even if they left the city decades ago), catch their elderly parents getting drunk and eventually catch their own kids having their first beers. One of the oldest bars in town: people have been drinking here on this spot since at least the 1780s. The original building was destroyed in a fire in the 1890s. The present-day building dates from around that time and survived Word War II. It's current decor is from around 1970 when the original De Koophandel (The Commerce) was renamed Seventy-Seven. Probably one of the ugliest and most worn out of all Middelburg bars, which adds to the charm. Other features: regular drum 'n bass nights, not so regular live music, huge terrace out front from april till october. The selection of beers (about 5 on draught, 10 on bottle) could be better. But the atmosphere is always good and you can get crisps, peanuts (free!) and all sorts of toasties around the clock.
