The path itself was nice and mostly flat with very few branches. It was an uphill walk but a semi scenic walk. Once you get closer to the top, there are some benches to sit on and once you get basically at the falls, there are steps leading down. The falls themselves are beautiful and the sound of the water is rather peaceful. Walking from the falls back up is rather steep. On the walk back we decided to go the opposite way we initially took. That path was a shorter path but there were tons of rocks and it was just steep and not nearly as scenic as the other path.

It wasn't too crazy with bunches of rocks or too "woodsy," but there is a good sized hill when you get close to the waterfall. There's a platform that you can take a few steps down onto for photos along with some other spots you can Instagram from. Given COVID, I recommend waiting for groups to come up the steps before going down. Note: There are not a ton of parking spaces at the trail head (maybe 15), so be prepared to possibly park along the road.

There is ample parking, and the main trail (Summit Trail) is very do-able. We saw plenty of seniors, small dogs, and children making this hike. There is an overlook only a mile in, and it's pretty impressive. You could stop and turn around there, and not be disappointed. The top overlook is gorgeous too and is only 1.9 miles to the top. The majority of the path is gravel, but there are some larger step stone rocks. The trail is not wheelchair friendly. There are picnic tables and restrooms in the park, and they even have a visitor center with gift shop. This was a popular trail with lots of App State students, and it was clean. They have other, shorter trails but the Summit trail was the main attraction.

The road to park is very steep in sections and has two (2) hairpin turns not designed for large heavy vehicles. When we got to the state park, at what felt like the top of the mountain, the only thing we saw were a dozen or so new picnic tables surrounded by a field of leafless trees ~ mid April. Very disappointed to say the least. IMPORTANT: On the way back down to Boone our brakes started to fail at about an .08 of the way down and we had the pull over and let them cool down for 45 minutes to let them stop smoking. This was a very scary experience and a poor decision to visit. Absolutely would not recommend this experience in any car or in an RV!!! Hope this helps someone.

We were looking for a place to go hiking where we could see good fall colors. We found a guide that…read moresaid this would be the perfect elevation for the weekend we wanted to go. There isn't much parking, maybe 5-10 spots, but tons of cars park along the road. The last few miles to get there is a bumpy gravel road. I had read that it was a 1.5 mile round trip hike, but it ended up being around 2.3 miles. It was a pretty short hike to the summit, but it was a decent climb. It's not marked all that well. At the first split, take a left. There is a sign that points you back to the parking lot which you can use in reverse to figure out which way the summit must be. There's another split close to the top. We were told that both ways will take you to the summit with the left being shorter and steeper. The views at the summit are breathtaking. You can get a view from the left side, but the actual summit is to the right. You can get 360 degree views that are stunning. It was incredibly windy at the summit. The hike up wasn't because of the trees blocking it, but it felt like you might get blown off the summit. We were a little disappointed because the views were still almost completely green, but leaves changing is probably happening a lot later than normal this year because of the warm weather. You can also drive a couple of miles down the road and hike to the Table Rock summit. We decided to call it a day after Hawksbill, but might come back another time. If you're looking for a short hike with awesome views, I would highly recommend this one!

I recommend waking up early and getting there for sunrise. We got there around 7:45am and the parking lot was already full. We were able to park on the side of the road though. It got way more crowded later in the day. It's only about a 2.5 mile hike round trip from the parking area. We tried to hike further on the trail, but ended up taking a wrong turn that brought us back to where we started. It was recommended to start at Linn Cove Visitor Center and hike the back way there for less crowds. We wanted to do this, but the parking lot was closed so we couldn't. This is a great hike in the fall for gorgeous fall colors. It's hard to beat the views.

This trail was easy to spot off the road with a very nice visitors center with lots of fun items and some cute dogs to pet but that's where to good stuff ends. The trailhead marker behind the center took us the wrong direction on the trail that we wanted to head. There was not sufficient signage to indicate which way it was leading. After hiking over 1 mile we realized our mistake and turned back. There was some interesting things to see but not enough for me to ever return. The rain was holding off so we took the trail the correct way which is located on the opposite end of the parking lot from the visitor center. While this part of the trail was more interesting the view point under the bridge was very underwhelming and we would not do it again.
