It was originally a house built in 1878 and is now a locally owned hotel. The grounds are well landscaped and maintained. It is next to a golf course. My room was on the smaller side overlooking the central fountain. The age of the hotel is evident and a remodel is due. There is no air conditioning and no screens on the windows, so if you open the windows you can expect insect roommates. The TV was small and channel selection standard for this area, don't expect complete sports coverage or American cable selections. There was a hot beverage tray and I had to juggle the outlet use between the TV, hot pot and my chargers frequently. Same for the lamp, fragrance ball and laptop at the desk. The shower flow was low and needs maintenance, but it worked. There is complimentary WiFi which worked very well. Since it wasn't very warm during my stay in late July, the room was comfortable and functional. The room rate was moderate. I had breakfast every morning. The continental selections were limited with a fruit bowl, baked goods, yogurt, boxed cereals and juice. There is no breakfast buffet and I ordered the same cooked breakfast which was fine with me. The restaurant is open for dinner from Wednesday through the weekend. It is a French themed menu, very good and reasonably priced. There is an adjoining leisure center with pool, spa, etc. which I did not use.

Quaint, local, on a country club with all brand new health gym and spa, this place was quite a find! A little far from the center of town, say 5 miles, we found this homey, comfortable, with large "family rooms" with 3+ beds. Wonderful filling and perfectly cooked breakfast, late night snacks, and I think, even drinks at the bar were included in our 79 BSPs per night. The staff were helpful and kind. The lobby, seating areas and restaurant spacious and relaxing. I don't know if i'll ever been in Wales again, but the pleasant location would bring me there first. ~ Ms. ali

The facilities are clean, the staff helpful, and the pool is truly nice. They have a lot of good classes, which, sadly, are often so booked up with eager yoga-ists, Pilates-fans and Zumba- enthusiasts that we stretch, strain and Zumba into our nearest neighbour. Luckily all with good grace and a smile and, as far as I know, no major fallings-out or injuries. The latest offerings are as diverse as walking clubs, wine tasting and poker (obviously the whole health thing might be slipping a tad). There are a number of membership options starting from around £40 per month, which if I go three times a week works out at cheaper than attending classes elsewhere. Then, I can destroy all my good work by wandering into the café or bar afterwards.

The King's Head is the pick of the bunch. It is privately owned, and run by friendly and welcoming young staff. Whilst not the smartest or most chic establishment in town, it is certainly the quirkiest, with an astonishing array of artefacts, accumulated down the years, adorning its walls and shelfs. A labyrinth of little bars, it has comfortable sitting-room type furniture and you can relax on a sofa whilst enjoying your drink. It has en-suite rooms, its own car park, and the Chef, Jose Casas, cooks meals that are a lot more than your average pub grub. Local meat and fish feature on his menus, and you need to be very hungry if you order his 'specials'. A former Gwent Pub of the Year winner, The Kings has a choice of real ales, and a very large range of wines and spirits. An excellent spot to stop and slake your thirst (just 1 mile off the M50-A449 route), or to use as a base if touring the area.

The main bedroom area was large but the furniture was very old fashioned and the paint was beginning to look very tired and yellowing. In the bathroom I was shocked to see some cobwebs on the ceiling and a thick layer of dust on the skirting boards. There were some complimentary toiletries by the sink but one of these had obviously been used. We attended an evening wedding party and were shocked at the bar prices - £4.30 for a single malibu & mixer and £3.50 for a bottle of lager. We booked an early morning wake-up call at 7.30 but this did not happen. The grounds are beautiful and the full english breakfast was excellent but overall I would not recommend this to my friends or family.

The downsides were: Demanding a swipe of your credit card before signing in even though my company pays. This is a pet hate of mine. The food, although very pretty, was expensive and tiny in the restaurant if you need to walk anywhere, which I did, there are no footpaths outside the hotel leading to the nearest major road. I had to walk in the road or on the wet grass, neither very satisfactory will dragging a wheelie case. The remote for the telly didn't turn it on, just off. The wifi in the room was almost non existent. Other than that fine :-)

The staff a quite friendly and helpful. The hotel hosts quite a few parties and events at Christmas time.

But you can still just about have a good night out here. Walkabout. Dear me. I'm really not sure what's supposed to be Australian about this franchise. I feel like they're giving the poor blighters a bad name. The only reason people enjoy this place is because they're so drunk when they arrive, that they've lost many of their mental faculties on the street outside. In my experience, Walkabout is the place where I've seen the most fights, the most drinks spilt over poor, unsuspecting girls in white dresses (suspicious) and the most pools of vomit. However, I will confess that it is also a place where I see efficient crowd control from the staff and exceptionally hardworking bar staff. The staff deal with the problem of this place well, maybe. But the fact remains that the problem is created in the first place. If you have any say in the choice of evening destination, perhaps give Walkabout a miss.
