I honestly cannot believe what our experience has been like with Newtown Friends School. It was…read morerecommended to us by an acquaintance whose children attend there and love it. Small classes, progressive values such as inclusivity and diversity, values that so much seemed to reflect our own. It just so happens that our fourth grader was the victim of a crime over the summer before attending this new school. His behavior was affected by this event and, initially, NFS staff, using their language of partnership and collaboration, provided support that had an immediate positive impact. As they expressed a willingness to collaborate with us so did they decide NOT to actually collaborate. The simple recommendation was to keep the support in place and unchanged for a number of months. For whatever their reason, they chose not to do so. This immediately set our child up for failure as they made changes to the support that was working perfectly. Despite our efforts to collaborate, they simply changed it with no regard to what would work for our son. As a result, he was basically set up for failure. Our bright and motivated 9-year-old boy was never in so much trouble as he was at NFS. He was clearly under their critical microscope and their lack of understanding, empathy and unwillingness to work with him was both shocking and obvious. We decided that this school was definitely not a match for him or for our family. The values that they tout are good on paper but our experience is that none of them were genuine and there was no caring about our child, family or experience. "Teaching the whole child", and all of their "partnership", was chewed up and spit out along with us. But they made a point of keeping our.overpayment. Please know that NFS collects tuition fully in advance of the school year being complete. So if you invest in this place for your child's education and well-being, be prepared to lose your money if your child is deemed not good enough by those on high in administration. A sad reflection of Quaker values equating to a complete and total lack of empathy, enormous hypocrisy and obvious greed.

I like that the classes were small and open if you wanted to see what your child was working on while they were there. I found the price to be reasonable and a good option for the summer when it's super hot in case you have a kid that is not into outdoor summer camps like me.

I am of course speaking in hushed, reverential tones about the Institute for Advanced Study quietly doing their think tank thing at One Einstein Way. Founded in 1930 by renown educator Abe Flexner with an endowment from the retail scions of the Bamberger family, their initial goal was to spirit away Germany's best scientists from the Third Reich and more currently, to collect and place the finest minds in science, mathematics, humanities et al, in an isolated and immersive intellectual environment - giving these true masters of the universe a place to come ponder and ruminate about research they might like to pursue without the distraction of teaching class or the publish or perish burdens of mainstream academia. Albert Einstein was their first fellow and the list of "faculty" is no less luminous to the present day. The resulting list of groundbreaking insights and awards for scholarship is beyond impressive. As far as I can tell there are no tours but the building itself is as impressively foreboding as you would expect. For whatever reason I like knowing that it's here and with all due respect, helps to keep the community college rabble at Princeton University on their toes.

But seriously, enter the area, and you'll just feel smarter, or really really stupid. But let's get to the important part - the cafeteria. The lunch here was insane for a cafeteria style place. The pork chop I was given looked like it was made in a real restaurant. The variety was quite fantastic (sandwiches, soups, desserts, etc). I'm not sure about the price though, my boss paid. I've seen other Fortis locations…read morelisted, but they have different addresses, so to be clear, this review is for the Fortis Institute located at 450 N Sam Houston Pkwy E, Ste 200, Houston, TX 77060. I attended this school for the Medical Assistant program to work toward becoming a CCMA (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant). At the beginning, my experience was okay and I didn't have many issues with my classes or instructors. However, as I got further into the program, my experience started to change. There were three staff members in particular that I had issues with. 1. Ms. Marin: I later found out that she would talk about me and my friends, and there were times when she would call us out in front of the entire class in a way that made us feel singled out or less than everyone else. I don't think students should be made to feel embarrassed in front of their classmates, especially by an instructor. 2. Ms. Nun: Whenever I had class with her, I felt like we barely learned anything. I specifically remember my friends and I asking if we could go through the skills list and practice different things to see what we still remembered and what we needed more help with. We were trying to make sure we were actually prepared, but our request was basically ignored and we barely practiced anything. 3. Ms. Moxcley: Toward the end of the program, we were told that we would receive assistance with finding employment. I remember reaching out to her multiple times about finding a job, but I would either receive no response or very little communication. Because I wasn't getting anywhere, I recently contacted Ms. Goss for help finding an MA position. I explained that I'm specifically interested in working as a Medical Assistant in an OB/GYN clinic. She told me she would call me. When she called, I happened to be busy and missed it, but I returned her call shortly afterward. She didn't answer, so I sent her a message letting her know I had called back and was available. This happened Tuesday. By Friday, I still had not received a response to any of the messages I sent afterward. I finally sent another message, and she responded saying she would call me "momentarily." I waited about two hours and still did not receive a call. That is what finally pushed me to leave this review. One of the things students are told is that Fortis will help them with employment after completing the program. In my experience, once you're finished with the school, getting that help has been extremely frustrating. Messages go unanswered, communication is inconsistent, and the employment assistance I was told I would receive has not been what I expected. I also don't understand the point of asking students what area they want to specialize in as an MA if the positions they are being directed toward aren't related to what they said they were interested in. I understand that nobody can guarantee you a specific job, but there is a difference between not being able to guarantee employment and simply not communicating with a former student who is actively asking for assistance. I completed my program and I'm genuinely trying to start my career and put my education to use. I'm not asking anyone to hand me a job. I'm asking for the career assistance and communication that we were told would be available to us. Unfortunately, my experience trying to receive that assistance has been extremely disappointing.
