The path is about 1.2 miles long, and great to walk, bike, and jog. The riverwalk connects the east and west sides of downtown via two pedestrian bridges, so it's handy to walk to local attractions. I loved how there were maps of the nearby trails and businesses. The river itself smelled fresh, and I didn't see any litter or trash floating around. Props to Des Moines, Principal Financial and the Iowa state government for making this happen!

This park has four things going for it:…read more 1) The parking lot - this is some of the smoothest, most buttery concrete ever. If you like skateboarding, this is a niiiiiiiiiice spot. There's tons and tons of room, you can take it up, down, around and get some good inertia, no cracks, rocks or sharp turns. 2) The big pond - when it's hot outside my kids like to play in the water (yes, I know it's probably filthy), and it's a nice walk-around too. 3) The perpetual centripetal motion whirlygig - This thing is no joke. I got spun on a it for a hot minute and had a hilarious time trying to walk like the sober person I am. A silly toy, but tons of fun. 4) The zip rail - I will never get too old for these. Fight me for it.

Usually, we park the car over at the visitor center, and walk to wherever we're planning to visit throughout the lake and park area. Our dogs are small and get tired fast, so it's nice to have a centralized area with a lot to do, when they need a break. The visitor center provides access to beverage machines, maps, guides, and rules for the park areas. Off the back of the visitor center is a balcony that overlooks the lake, providing a pretty awesome view through the trees out into the water. Just a short walk northeast from the center is a butterfly garden, which actually lives up to its purpose, and just behind the garden is a heavily wooded area that leads to the beach. There are a ton of benches to sit on along the Neal Smith trail, which leads to more campgrounds, boating, and recreational sites. To the opposite direction is the actual dam, which despite its sometimes foul smell, is a sight to see. You're likely to see a few people fishing off of the dam, or just walking around the many secluded trails to view all parts of the park. Definitely recommend starting your next trip to Saylorville off on this side of the lake.

We visited on a Tuesday afternoon and there was a large school bus full of kids. There was PLENTY of room to play and run for many families including my own! I wasn't as disappointed realizing how much room there was for all the kids to play. I love there are hiking trails within the woods. One was closed due to the wetness of the trail. Another trail was beyond the soap box derby track and was open. Over all it was a very pleasant visit and i really enjoy this park! This park is a highlight to the south side of Des Moines!

The people we met were nice and it seemed everyone was looking out for each other. That's hard to find at a park, so I appreciated it. There was also a lovely trail to walk if you're tired of the playground. Oh, and there was a less busy playground across the street. While it wasn't as new as this one, it was still a good place. I enjoy the park for the birding opportunities that provides. It has an accessible bird viewing area with easy access for wheelchairs. I've seen red headed woodpeckers there , downey , woodpeckers , flycatchers , wobblers , finches , lots of variety. I also enjoy hiking the trail that's next to the bird area.For a wonderful walk into a burr oak forest with many of the trees looking like they're a several hundred plus years old. It's quiet and cool.Because the trail shaded. The other thing of note is that cut the trail wide enough that you can reasonably avoid ticks. I wish they would create a loop on that trail that would end up , so you would know that you've walked a mile or two. Maybe some volunteers could create it

The lodge area isn't anything fancy but it was actually larger than I expected. They also offer rentals for an additional fee to your lift ticket - skis, boards, boots, helmets, poles, etc. I am extremely impressed with the staff. I had only been snowboarding once about ten years ago and my husband never had. We were extremely nervous if we were going to pick it up and debated on paying for a private lesson. I would not advise paying for a lesson...Seven Oaks has many instructors perched on the learning/bunny hill. They offer group lessons on the hour but if you can find a free instructor and ask, they will give you their own sort of private lesson. That is what we did. An awesome board instructor spent about 15-20 minutes with us one-on-one, explained the basics and did some hands on instructing. After that, we both picked it up very quickly and could make it over to the more legit, but beginner hill. As I mentioned the lodge was more than I was anticipating. They have a concession stand, bar with pizza by the slice, and coffee shop. Lots of ample seating and even a large TV in the coffee shop area, we caught some of the Iowa State game while we were eating lunch. We would go back. It is a great option for the flat plains of Iowa.k

The river itself was stunning, we had gorgeous weather, and they had a small concession stand with necessities like bug spray available for purchase. Unfortunately, I still wouldn't recommend this experience when there are other options around Iowa for a similar price. We were told when reserving that if the river was too low, we would have the option to reschedule, which I think is a great policy. However, our reservation was on the last day of the season, so realistically rescheduling wasn't an option for us. My biggest issue wasn't even the low river level as the kayaks were doing great in the water- it was that the representative checking us in allowed us to take out a single canoe for our group knowing we would be dealing with less than a foot of water in some areas. This was our first time canoeing and kayaking, so we were relying on the staff's expertise. I really would have appreciated someone recommending that we switch from the canoe to a more maneuverable kayak given the conditions that day. Instead, we ended up having to get out and push the canoe for a large portion of the trip. It was exhausting, and for some customers, it may not even be physically possible. As a first-time floater who brought out-of-state friends specifically for this activity, I wasn't expecting the river conditions to be perfect. We were prepared to make the best of it. What I did expect was some guidance from the company about how to have the best experience possible given the conditions that day. I'd recommend choosing Seven Oaks to be more proactive about advising inexperienced customers, matching the right equipment to the river conditions, and allowing some flexibility to switch boats once you arrive.

The incline and declines are gradual, despite a few small hills. On uphill, this allows you to keep your speed up and also work a bit harder. 3. There is enough space for three bikes across in the event someone passes another biker and miscalculated the oncoming traffic. 4. You have multiple options for bars! 5. You can enjoy nature along the trail if that is your interest. Cons: 1. As of summer 2018, there are numerous bumps/cracks in the asphalt that can honestly cause damage to some bikes, and can really slow your pace. There is evidence they tried to repair them with that black goo, but it's still bad. I wish they would fully repave it. 2. There are a few crossings that require slowing/stopping to watch out for traffic. 3. Near the golf course there are some sharp curves you have to slow down for (trust me). You do occasionally have to deal with golf carts crossing in your path.
