Shout out to the paleontologists Myra and Andy for answering ours questions about geology, paleontology, and dinosaurs. Andy explained that the museum/area (ie egg mountain) is known for the large amount of excavated dinosaur eggs and general fossils. Myra was in the "fishbowl" working on some fossils while we were there, which was cool too. Great place to stop for an hour or two, depending on how much you like to read museum information and ask questions.

The ice cream is super affordable & really good. The museum is small, but worth the inexpensive cost. There's a main building with some local prison history (there's a cool ledger to look at with past prisoner names & lists of crimes), some MT settler things, and dinosaurs. There are also smaller buildings to explore with exhibits about bears, with artwork, and my kids favorite which was the schoolhouse that had MT animals pelts/antlers to touch and look at up close. We were at the museum for just about an hour, but I probably could have spent at least a half hour more if my kids allowed me to read the exhibits more carefully.

My Wife wanted to stop here because she spent years living close, but never stopped and I'm glad she did as I thoroughly enjoyed the stop. They have a really nice mix historical through a number of little shops. If you head I to the building to the far left, it's $2 per person and you get to just work down the row of attractions. The main museum has some dinosaur fossils and local artifacts from the past. I particularly liked that they have a criminal record book that shows the name, age, weight, criminal offense, and a photo of the criminal. You can thumb through it and I happened to thumb through the year 1946. They also had an old jail door, an invitation to a hanging, and the skeleton on display that has arrowheads lodged into different spots due to an attack from Native Americans. That's the sort of stuff I find fascinating. The museum also has some dinosaur facts, fossils, and an interesting gift shop area that has books, small geodes, bracelets, and other items, and that's just the main building. The other buildings have an old schoolhouse, a lodge dedicated to bear trapping, a very interesting gift shop of knickknacks and housewares, and a recreation of a home from the early days of Choteau, a covered wagon, and an ice cream shop at the end of the row. Kids may not be thrilled about anything beyond the ice cream and dinosaur statues, but if there is any interest in the history of the area, I'd absolutely recommend it for a stop.

There were some dioramas, maybe 1/25 scale, of camp life, caravan, and ceremonies. The only real issue I had was that all of the items were displayed together with Nez-perce, crow, Blackfoot, and other tribes all together. Well, I take that back, the gift shop is way overpriced! For any perceived faults, the low entrance fee and the staff made this a good stop to make.

It's slow going because of the great interpretive signage that you will want to read. Do watch the introductory movie before you start with the exhibits, it'll give you a lot of context. Don't rush through the exhibits, and do as many of the hands-on activities you have time for. The centerpiece is the life-sized model of the crew hauling a dugout up a hill that stretches over several floors. The detail is incredible. When you are done take the short river walk over to Giant Springs - they are very close together and the walk is really pleasant.

Photo I.D. is required and they conduct a background check first. If they permit your entry, you have your photo taken and you sign a document. It's a simple process but it takes a bit of time even if the office isn't busy. It was my spouse's idea to check it out and even though I have no interest in the military, flying, etc., it turned out to be a cool and informative excursion that doesn't take up hours of your time. You're best off to visit the museum before wandering the air park. As soon as you walk in the door, you watch a fascinating video that puts you in the mood to visit the rest of the facility. I'm not going to share much more because I don't want to spoil anything, but stopping by the AFB is one of the few things I'd recommend to do in Great Falls.
