Quite honestly, it's been devastating - especially considering how hard I've been training inside and outside the gym recently. For the 24 hours prior, I was a wreck. Nevertheless, I knew I had to seek a podiatrist to do a further examination. Dr. Hagen came highly recommended. In fact, Dr. Hagen and her colleague operated on my mother's foot several years ago. Considering how much my mom has positively raved about Dr. Hagen (and trust me, my mom has massively problematic feet), I was hopeful she could also help. Here's the thing - Dr. Hagen is about an hour away from me. Nevertheless, I was determined to go. I truly believe a great doctor is worth the travel. My wife drove me to the visit, since the fracture of my right foot makes me unable to drive for the time being. After we left, we both equally felt incredibly happy with our visit. Dr. Hagen and her assistant were incredibly attentive, kind, and laser focused. Dr. Hagen gave a thorough explanation of the issues and resolution; as well as the risks of not properly managing the injury. While I certainly hope to avoid surgery in the future, I would feel comfortable in Dr. Hagen's hands.

This time, after two weeks of trying everything, the flare-up would not go away. It was in my big toe and across my foot. To make matters worse, it looked like I was now developing a bunion (my diagnosis) something that gout can initiate. I have no insurance and Rapid Medicine, a walk-in clinic on White Plains Road that was my go to place for treatments and prescriptions (at $100 a visit, cash) had recently closed. I decided to try a podiatrist, in light that at the very least, I could get a prescription for Indomethacin and a diagnosis on the bunion. I have driven past Dr. Summers office many times, right where 3rd Avenue and Boston Road meet. There's a sign outside that says walk-ins welcome, and although I was able to see Dr. Summers after waiting only 20 minutes for another patient to be examined, the walk-in policy sign is for the regular MD who shares the same office space with the podiatry office. To be honest, the office is a bit run down, but I'm still giving Dr. Summers 5 stars and this is why: value and service. As I said, I have no insurance. I asked how much a consultation was and was told $70, which to me is great since most places bang you for $100. I was told if I received a shot, it would cost extra. No problem. The doctor examined my feet, while I gave her my medical history. She told me the basics on gout (which after 20 years I have down) and said without an X-ray she couldn't confirm whether I had a bunion or not and suggested we treat the gout and take it from there. Deal! She said she was going to give me a shot of anesthesia and steroids to get the swelling down and alleviate the pain and prescribe Indomethacin as I requested. Now here's the 5 star part: Dr. Summers injected my foot and toe in four places, handling the needle well. She then cleaned and wrapped my foot and then started pressing certain points. The underside of my big toe was still very sensitive and she asked me if it hurt. I said yes. Now, I think most doctors would have said - rest and you should feel better soon. But Dr. Summers undid the bandage and mixed up another batch of the anesthetic and steroid injection - what seemed to me a large dose. And man did it hurt going in, but seconds later my toe and surrounding area was numb and pain free. The doctor said that's exactly how I should feel. She re-wrapped my foot and wrote me the prescription. Total cost was $90, $70 for the visit and $20 for the shot. That $20 shot might be the best value in medical treatment I have ever received. Just a couple of notes. Again, this is not a walk-in clinic, so call ahead for an appointment. Also, Dr. Summers works on Monday and Wednesday and another podiatrist works Tuesday and Thursday. They have Friday and Saturday hours but I'm not sure who works those days. For point of interest, the MD who shares the office space is Dr. Patel, an internist. I don't know if he's good, but I'll give him a shot the next time I need medical attention as walk-ins are welcome there Monday thru Saturday. Street parking us free and easy within a couple of blocks.

If I have a significant orthopedic injury, I will only go to the Hospital for Special Surgery. #1 in the country for orthopedics. Seriously, when I got here I thought, "Good God this guy is going to use a hacksaw to take my foot off!" I completely was ready to make a b-line for the front door and just call this whole thing off because the office is severely outdated, I'm talking severely! To my surprise they actually had working computers...LOL! If you can look past the severely outdated office, the antiquated items you may see in exam rooms, the peeling plaster on the walls you will find the staff super nice and the doctor is an experienced foot God! No the staff won't light incense and shake a dead chicken around your foot in tribute to the good doctor. I meant he's more like God sent, not literally a deity. I run often and twisted my ankle pretty badly a few months back but had pain that came and went. The previous doctor that i visited a few months ago had all the high tech fancy gadgets was probably fresh out of medical school but was clueless as to why I was feeling severe pain in my ankle. Thankfully Dr. Wolfson with all his vast experience quickly identified why I was experiencing pain as an ankle fracture. Had I not sought a second opinion with this office I very well could have done some unintentional permanent damage to my ankle. Dr. Wolfson confidently examined my foot and was quick to figure out exactly what was broken (literally). So as the old adage goes, "Don't judge a book by it's cover" and even though this small office is outdated in appearance, within its walls is a great doctor. I'm very happy with the care I'm getting, the ease of making appointments and the lovely nursing staff. I will take an old school doctor like Wolfson who comes with vast experience over a young modern high tech toting dult that knows nothing other than to press a magical button on the automatic blood pressure cuff. I'm so thankful to have found this doctor and gotten proper care for my ankle. If I break anything else I'm coming here for repairs.
