Perfect place to get lost with a book after you find your treasure! We had to cut our visit short due to our 12 year old not feeling well. It's spacious with lovely greenery and reading nooks--and it has a Harry Potter room! The kids section has heart-melting tiny cushion seats for the littlest readers in your life. No space is wasted here as you'll see bookish tokens from totes, socks, and pencil pouches placed in various locations. The main space has comfy couches, great lighting, and it almost makes you feel like you're reading in an English garden. Fabulous selection of used and new with fair prices. The owner was a gem and so nice to chat with. If I lived in Springfield, I would be here all the time. I'm definitely coming back to stay in "Sleep Above the Shop" space.

So the kids and I were excited when we saw a Books A Million right there in the middle of everything. Even though we were on vacation and looking for new and different things it was a comfort to be able to take a break and stop on by to browse the books, games, collectibles, toys, shirts, movies and so much more they have to offer than just books. You could spend 15 minutes here or maybe more than an hour getting lost in thoughts while browsing through the store. It's worth a stop if you enjoy the fun things Books A Million has to offer.

I usually get a kick out of that feeling until a half-hour later when the weight of utter futility has set in and I realize, indeed, I'm not finding anything decent and I learn what it must be like to live in a Soviet-style dictatorship where someone has cruelly banned the Vonneguts and whatnot. That type of materialistic capitalist hoarding hasn't set in at this bookstore, and least not as-of the date I went last. They looked to specialize more in classics, notable modern authors, and well-reviewed contemporary works. Out of all the used book stores I've been to (a fair amount), this one is the furthest left on the quality-quantity balance, and that's not a bad thing. Prices seemed reasonable and the books look to be in good condition. Staff seemed chill and it sounds like they accept store credit if you have good material to give them (I have convinced myself that the bartering for property rights in material goods is for ironic purposes only). If you feel any comradeship with those with liberal arts pedigrees or are just one of those folks who needs more than potboiler books of the petit bourgeoisie, this place would be an excellent option. Ashley, the owner, met us at the door and was energetic and passionate about the shop. It hasn't been open long. Ashley has also just written a book, The Girl Who Dances with Skeletons, and she told us about it. We also met her daughter, the actual "girl who dances with skeletons"! There's a lot more than Thomas Kincaide's here. There's some great illustrative art and literary gifts galore. I walked out with two delicious candles: "The Writer" and "Gatsby." I also nabbed a Frida on-the-rocks glass. It's so refreshing to see someone excited about their work!!!!!

However, I didn't find too many books of interest, and the tight quarters and powerfully musty smell does have me questioning a return trip. It's fun to just pop into stores around Eureka, and I love a good bookstore. Usually the best part of the bookstore is the vibes, which is why I'm not raving about this one. As others have noted, vibes here aren't the best. I love old buildings but this one feels like it's about to topple over in some ways. It definitely has it's own character that's for sure. I also didn't find that everything was categorized all that well, and was sort of left to just meander and try to skooch by everyone. Fun idea to see a local bookstore in the shops of downtown Eureka Springs, and maybe this one isn't for everyone but always worth popping in.

Then she turned her attention to me, barking at me about no pictures allowed and no cell phone use. I also turned and walked out. I work in publishing. I appreciate the challenges independent bookstores face, including competition from online retailers. However, between the rude clerk, the smell, and the rules, this was the definition of a ruined first impression. Customer experience is one of the few competitive advantages an independent bookstore has, and sacrificing that in an effort to prevent a small number of people from comparison shopping is foolish.
