It genuinely saddens me to have to write such a negative review as I have used this jeweller for a while now and have always found their services for simple repairs and alterations very efficient. I recently bought along an antique marquise 2 carat diamond ring which required significant restoration and was assured that the repair could be carried out without any problem and that the diamonds would require a new setting and claws. I was very eager to go ahead as the piece was for my 40th birthday and a lot of money had been spent on the purchase, probably more than I've ever spent on an item of jewellery before In fact.
To summarise the shambolic repairs which would take place over four attempts and a few months has left me out of pocket by £290. Triggs were willing to rectify the first problem when one of my diamonds fell out after having worn it for less than an hour and then on the second occasion after having had it back again for a few days the claws literally snapped off one by one because they were so flimsy. My beautiful ring was in a worst state than it had ever been before. The story goes on and on . At one point he even accused me of miss using my ring and charged me £40 more to rectify a problem which they were responsible for. On my forth visit to Triggs I spoke with an older man and woman who I thought might have been the managers parents. I found them far more rational and they even agreed that the ring's repair wasn't sufficent while the more recently appointed generation of management kept muttering in the background at his disagreement of the whole scenario, I found this to be highly inappropriate and showed a lack of respect for the piece. At this point I was beginning to feel extremely embarrassed by the whole tedious experience but thought that surely this time they would get it right. How wrong I was, the job of re clawring the outer stones had been completed after waiting almost five weeks so I gussed the person carrying out the repair would have had plenty of time during my lengthy wait to check over all the stones and make sure they were all secure, after all this ring had now been back and forth four times to their workshop. This time the main Central stone fell out literally minutes after putting it on my finger. I was so lucky to have found the stone shimmering on my rug because if I hadn't it would have been another story. It goes without saying that I am devastated by this whole experience and my husband who was last to speak with the manager , as I couldn't bring myself to. I was actually told to bring it in for the FIFTH time for yet another repair because no refund would be granted as it had "cost him" in repairs. I will continue to question WHY on return from the workshop was this piece never checked for quality of workmanship and why hasn't the person who carries out repairs been questioned. This repair required traditional hand finished techniques ( which I would have payed a premium) but I later discovered a machine was used which I'm now told has weakened the whole setting, in other words ruined a £2000 ring.
How ridiculous that Triggs would want anything more to do with this repair after four inadequate attempts and how naive they must have thought we'd be to bring it back.
I am now going to try and have my ring repaired in Hatton Garden and save what little dignity this beautiful ring has left. I will also be contacting the national association of Goldsmiths which I believe this astablishment to be part of. read more
