Review: As a person on holiday on campus. At 433 years old (est. 1592, by Queen Elizabeth I) and counting, Trinity College (TC) was a "must see" for our itinerary while in Ireland. Besides the overall history of the college, TC boasts the Old Library that can usually be found on the top 10 list of best libraries in the world. Inside of it, the Book of Kells (around 800 AD) is kept in a climate-controlled section. So much history! When my family and I found out we could stay on campus in the summer accommodations site, we booked directly with TC. When we arrived, we headed to the registration office, where we were assisted by students and who provided good service during our stay. The Heritage room my wife and I booked was modest, with two twin beds and a large window that looked out on the tennis courts. The bathroom was compact with a phone booth sized shower, which might be a challenge for anyone 6' tall and over! Each day, housekeeping made our beds and provided clean towels and, if needed, new soap and shampoo. Each floor has a kitchen with a stovetop, microwave, refrigerator and more, and places to sit and eat. An access card is needed to enter the dorm, kitchen, and room. The campus itself is easy to walk, with plenty of green spaces. My family and I enjoyed sitting on the green (with many other people!) between the main buildings, people watching under the sun and passing clouds. A couple of eateries and coffee trucks can be easily found. We paid for a guided tour that was well-worth the expense. The history of how the college was established, the history since then, and even the architecture of the older buildings kept us engaged, and was one of the many highlights during our stay. TC's location is pretty central to many of the "must see" places in Dublin, and the ones we chose were all walkable. More information can be found on the TC website. But for us, we accomplished all we set out to do and see on campus and took home many, long-lasting memories.
Trinity College is Ireland's top university and most historical and is an unmissable attraction in the Irish capital. It is also the home of the famed Book of Kells One of the most prestigious universities in the world, Trinity College Dublin, was packed with both students and visitors, leisurely walking or rushing through the main campus. Once inside, you find yourself in the enclosed Parliament Square with several impressive buildings surrounding you. They all date from different centuries with none of them surviving since the first days of the college. You are free to stroll the grounds at your own liberty but to visit the Long Library Room and the Book of Kells you need to pay an admission fee. it is located in College Green at the top of Dublin's Dame Street. The street is perhaps Dublin's finest, a stroll down takes you past the Bank of Ireland (the world's first purpose-built Parliament House), City Hall, Dublin Castle and up towards Christchurch Cathedral. Along the way, you will find lots of high street shops, and charming restaurants and pubs.
We're staying in the graduate dorms at Trinity College and loving it! Affordable accommodations, great proximity to everything, and a beautiful campus. Breakfast at The Buttery is included... the only drawback... no elevator in our building, and the 2nd floor is really the 3rd floor!
The oldest and most prestigious university in Ireland. We had a lovely time touring the grounds and soaking in the atmosphere before making our way to the Book of Kells and the Long Room Library.
We were lucky enough to get a private tour access all areas because I have a contact among the alumni who entered here over 30 years ago to do research and he has never and will never leave. We were there over 4 hours. We saw the book of Kells and I already knew enough about it and saw the Brian Boru harp and one of the five existing real copies of the 1916 Easter Rising. The history here is so long and riveting that one could literally write dozens of books about it so I won't bother saying much more just to note that the most visited place in Ireland is the Guinness brewery and the second The Book of Kells. If you are in Dublin do visit.
Established in 1592 by the Queen of England. Initially a college for the privileged and entitled it's now a university for the masses. Initially for Catholic men only. Now open to women, as well as all faiths and denominations. The campus is on 46 acres. The students are very much activists and engaged in affairs. A beautiful campus of higher learning.
Beautiful campus but there were several buildings under construction so I only did a quick walk through. It is very busy between the college kids and tourists.
Did the campus and Book of Kells tour, and made the reservation online in advance. We arrived 15 minutes earlier at the bell tower as suggested, and our tour guide Paul arrived with a blue tour guide sweater to check off names. You don't need the actual tickets until you do the Book of Kells, which is the second part of the tour. The campus is pretty and the tour provided a lot of helpful context. The Book of Kells had an exhibit which Paul highly recommended reading beforehand in order to fully appreciate the Book, otherwise just seeing two pages wouldn't do justice to the significance of what you're viewing. No photos allowed of the Book. After the Book, you get to see the Old Library, which was beautiful. Best photo spot would be right in front of the set of stairs that lead to the exit.
Queen Elizabeth I founded Trinity College in 1592, making it Ireland's oldest university. So I knew I wanted to take a walk around it when I was in Dublin for the first time last week! Parliament Square is beautiful, and I really enjoyed a walk around it and a few others areas of the campus. We didn't go inside any buildings (the books have been taken off the shelves in the library for renovation and I wasn't sure which other buildings were open to the public), but it was still beautiful just to walk around the campus and take in the facades and atmosphere of the campus! Well worth a walk around if you're in the area.
Joffrey Baratheon is an alumnus from here. So are these people: Oscar Wilde, Courtney Love, Hozier, and Niall Horan. If you're a tourist in Dublin, you can't not check this place out, even if you're not going to pay and see the The Book of Kells. The courtyard is a nice area to people-watch and relax, before going on to more sightseeing and your next pint of Guinness. Cool old university!
I'm not sure what I can say about Trinity College that hasn't been said before. The campus itself is old - very old. Some of the buildings are originals that were updated over the years. We visited one day before the fall semester started and much of the campus was under construction. It will be a surprise if they are ready for the students. After a tour of the campus, we went to see the Book of Kells exhibit. The Book of Kells is an old bible with beautiful calligraphy and drawings. There is a nice exhibit showing the history of the book. Then you arrive at the exhibit. I admit, it was a little underwhelming since the book is behind glass and opened so you can see one page. It was not unexpected- if they allowed people to touch it, the book wouldn't last. What I found amazing was the long hall. This was a two story library with sections dedicated to many of the classic writers, philosophers, and scientists. I think the oldest section was books by Plato. The Long Hall is lovely, iconic, and contains icons of history. This was well worth the tour.
Lots of colleges like to boast about being right in the thick of all the action. Trinity College may boast, but it's absolutely true! I like visiting college campuses--maybe it's an occupational hazard. But there is always interesting history, beautiful buildings, and something interesting afoot at a college or university. Trinity College has all this in spades, having been established at the tail end of the 16th century. It's highly respected, considered one of the top 100 or so universities in the world. Of course there is an impressive roster of alumni. You'll probably have come here to see the Book of Kells, probably the most famous illuminated text in the world. That would be a great idea! The book is gorgeous, truly. They give you a little bit of info as you first enter, and then let you view the pages. The book is thought to have been created around the year 800, and is largely seems to have used the Vulgate as its inspiration. It's fewer than 700 pages total, large pages of course, but still not as big as I had expected. They have four pages on display each day, and those pages rotate every once in a while. It's been divided into four volumes, so only two volumes with those four pages are on display at any given time. The pages are so intricate that you won't see everything but you can take in a lot! It's astounding how well preserved the book remains; the pages practically glow. When you leave the Book of Kells, you'll pass through The Long Room of the Trinity College library. WOW. I think my jaw actually dropped when I stepped into this space. I mean, it's breathtaking. Truly I don't know if another library in the world could do the Book of Kells justice! Soaring, arched ceilings soft lighting. I could spend half a day wandering this space. Besides the Book of Kells, Trinity College Library holds the Brian Boru harp (you'll see harps all over Ireland--this harp is the national symbol of Ireland). Also, the library is a copyright library, which means that publishers must provide a copy of each work they publish to the library. (This is similar to the Library of Congress in the United States.) Definitely take the time to stroll the grounds before or after you have taken in the Book of Kells and the library. The school bookstore is near the exit if you want a keepsake. I bought my Trinity college sweatshirt there and over 11 years later it still keeps me warm, and brings back memories of my time in Ireland.
If you look up things to do in Dublin, one of the main things people tell you to do is visit Trinity College. We visited and I honestly think that college campuses in general aren't super interesting. I think that if you're thinking about attending a specific college for school, it's a great idea to tour the campus, but if you're someone like me who has spent way too much time on their former college's campus, then you may not find this attraction too interesting. It is free though and not a bad activity to do when trying to wide away time.
We had such a great time learning about this amazing and historic college. Our tour guide, Olivia was giving her last tour before she graduated and it was amazing! She took the time to explain each area with care and details. It was so informative! The grounds are impressive! There are several places to sit and relax if you are not on the tour (or afterwards). Some of the old trees are massive. There are a ton of photo opportunities. The architecture, the long hall and the Book of Kells are all fascinating! We spent a couple of hours there all said and done. For me, this is place I would not likely come back to but should definitely be visited because of all the history. Highly recommended! read more
Trinity College is a beautiful and spacious campus (50 acres) founded in 1592. It's considered to be the Harvard of Ireland. My beloved Oscar Wilde is an alumni. The 18th century architecture is a mashup of Victorian Gothic, Neoclasical, Georgian, etc. It's wonderful campus for strolling to take in the architecture, green spaces, and people. The Trinity Trails walking tour is student-led and about an hour long. It's a great way to take in all of the campus. read more

A beautiful campus right in the middle of Dublin! Trinity College has a large green space surrounded by buildings with amazing architecture. The Book of Kells believed to be the first illuminate of manuscript is also located here. The Book of Kells Experience an entrance to the famous library. It's a good activity to do. Tours of the campus are also available. There is a café on the campus and bathrooms are available. read more

Great campus to roam around at even if you don't attend the school. They give tours of the campus + the library which judging by the pictures it looks very instagram friendly. The entire university is very diverse. I didn't get to go inside any of the buildings, so can't really write about that part. Wondering if it looks renovated and modernized. All in all great to walk around outside weather permitting. read more

This is not merely a review of the popular library but of the campus as a whole. Trinity College offers a beautiful environment for a stroll, one of the most picturesque parts of blue collar Dublin. The grounds of luscious green lawns and colorful flowers are immaculately kept amidst pristine buildings and various works of art. The famous Book of Kells is a vital piece of literary history and a main draw here. But the more enjoyable aspect is stepping into the library with its magnificent vaulted ceilings and endless rare books. If you heard that the directional flow of people is chaotic inside, you heard right. Multiple streams of humans converge into small doorways, but once you're in the library's main hall, you're in the clear. Trinity College is the top-rated university in Ireland. Its academic rating (for curious Americans like us) puts it on par with the lower end of America's top 50 universities, keeping in mind that the population of Ireland is only 1% of the United States. That would give Trinity equal prestige with the likes of RPI or University of Texas, both impressive institutes in the U.S. Are the lines for the Book of Kells worth it? Probably not. But the university grounds certainly warrant a walkabout. read more
Trinity College Dublin, Ireland This is an overdue review for my visit at this beautiful campus years back. Was on a tour of Ireland and we decided to see the Book of Kells, a very significant vintage biblical collection of books which was on exhibit at one of the halls at Trinity College. The docent tour was less than an hour and informative. Due to the sensitive condition of the books, no pictures were allowed inside the temperature controlled glass encased display. The books were written in ancient 800 AD in Latin by monks in Scotland who took refugee in Ireland from prosecution. the Book of Kells is the world's most famous and oldest books. These books are smallish, by comparison to the Guggenheim Bible for reference. My recall of the details of those books escapes me, and I'll blame it on the alcohol. Yes, the alcohol, as the bulk of our trip involved touring breweries, restaurants and drinking lots of whiskey. The bartenders at the Temple Bar, loved pouring whiskey for me to sample and so I was semi conscious during this tour, basically felt like a walking zombie in my Gucci loafers.. :) Trinity College was a nice campus and had that medieval appeal with most of the walkways in stone and building structures also resembled many castles I saw throughout the countryside of Ireland. If you're in this magnificent country a visit to Trinity College should be on your agenda, just make sure you're not inebriated ;) read more

Our tour guide was fantastic and very engaging, a senior at the college and a future political science major with a legal degree too. But his knowledge and history of Trinity College was very interesting and detail. I believe he'll most likely work in the theatrical arts due to his sense of humor, animated delivery and wonderful speaking voice. The history of Trinity College is historical and deep, from King Henry III to Tree removal due to fungus and the water table troubles this location has endured. More history about the Book of Kells and the Trinity library. Well worth the 40 minuet tour and you ticket includes admission to the library where the Book of Kells exhibit lives. Well done (tour guide) Shawn, thank you for the history lesson and best of luck in the dog eat dog world beyond your lessons and studies. read more
I love coming here. It's so rich in history. I had to come back on my second visit to Dublin to share some memories with my mother. On my first visit, I actually presented amongst educators, met professors, and had a lovely dinner with some of them. They were warm and kind. It's nice for a walk around campus or a tour. You have to visit the Long Room and see the Book of Kells, of course. read more

Review #1000 We visited the Trinity College campus twice while on holiday last year - first as part of an official guided tour of the college campus (booked here: https://www.tcd.ie/visitors/tours/), and second as part of an unrelated private tour. (It is located across the street from the Irish Houses of Parliament, which I also recommend!) I feel so fortunate to have visited this historic college! It was established in 1592 as the second university (following the first created by the Pope in the 1300s). Before our visit, I had no idea that there had been restrictions on who was admitted: and that it was first closed to Catholics (until the Catholic Emancipation in the late 1700s) without special permission. This continued until the 1970s. Women were only admitted in the early 1900s. There are only a few entrances. We entered through the historic Front Gate at the College Green entrance and through the partial cobble stone walkway. We only visited the main college ground and Parliament Square, but the campus is vast (spanning over 45 acres) and holds 25 schools. The great library holds over 6 million printed volumes, many of which are of a historic nature, including the famed Book of Kells, which we also had the pleasure of viewing (ticketing information here: https://www.tcd.ie/visitors/book-of-kells/tickets-information/). The architecture is phenomenal, and ranges from historic to modern. Because we only viewed the western portion of the campus, most of what we viewed was historic. We did see wedding pictures in progress near the Chapel, viewed the historic Campanile, saw the Examination Hall, and also saw graduates posing for photographs. In the future, I'd love to take another holiday to Ireland and spend a longer amount of time appreciating the vast campus at Trinity College! read more
We were fortunate to have a Dublin tour guide who was a Trinity College graduate showing us the sights and explaining things, including the various statues, the buildings of "Hell" and "Heaven" plus the various programs of the College. Very interesting to walk the hallowed grounds of Trinity College. Famous alumni include Robert Ross (who was commander of the British forces that burned down the White House), Willie Walsh (chief executive of British Airways), and Bram Stoker (Dracula author). Of course, Nobel laureates Samuel Beckett (literature), William Campbell (medicine), Ernest Walton (physics) and Mairead Maguire (peace prize). Of course, what's a trip to Trinity College without the Long Hall or the Book of Kells? read more

Now you know the primary reason you come to Trinity College is to see the Book of Kells. That's what all the travel sites and guidebooks tell you, and far be it for me to tell you otherwise. Just be forewarned that it will cost you € 9 to take a self-guided walk into a dark room where maybe, just maybe, you'll have a couple of moments to see it before someone aggressively shoulder-blocks you away from the glass display case. That's why it's a good thing that Trinity College offers more than an ancient book. It's a beautiful campus fully enclosed within Dublin, small by US standards at 47 acres but steeped in history since it's been around since 1592. You enter though majestically carved wooden doors through the main gate on College Green and find yourself in the main quad, Parliament Square (see photo). Bear right and you'll end up in Fellows' Square, and the crowds you are likely to see are queuing up for the Book of Kells and the Long Room, as elegant a college library as you could possibly envision with marble busts lining the main hallway and spiral staircases leading you to over 200,000 antiquarian books (see photos). The greenest parts of the campus are the Rugby Ground and the immaculately manicured College Park lined with sturdy wooden benches (see photo). Sit a spell on one of them and bask in the academic splendor that is Trinity. read more
Trinity college is where the Book of Kells is stored. Unfortunately for our tour group, we were told that the display case that held the Book of Kells was damaged so the Book of Kells was not available for viewing. Bummer! Thankfully, there was a great store next to the exhibit so I spent a lot of my time here shopping. Plus, above the store was an awesome library. The library was breathtaking! I plan to return again, and hopefully when I do visit the Book will be available then! read more
