He needed social studies type reading comprehension and certain areas of math. We requested days, times, and number of hours - they made it all work for us. My son had already been through an SAT prep class (not through Sylvan) that did absolutely nothing for him. After my son worked with the director for two hours on reading comp, he went from consistently missing ten in reading to missing only five. His math practice tests grew stronger and stronger. On the actual test, my son raised his scores over 200 points from the PSAT. We never dreamed he could score as high as he did in math. He said there was not a math problem he couldn't solve and could have gotten a perfect SAT, but for the time constraint. He takes the test again this week, and is practicing more with time. No doubt, the help from Sylvan will show up even more after this round. To my son, the wonderful atmosphere at Sylvan made him want to try harder. He particularly noticed how nice everyone was - from the initial test proctor to the tutor himself.

During ACT prep sessions, the instructors simply read from the manual, without providing further…read moreinstruction or guidance to the students. Students are bored with the teaching methods. Apparently these instructors are not taught how to truly teach, nor are they taught how to use a variety of teaching methods. Also, the administration has limited ideas for how to help sustain students' discipline and attention during the sessions. These courses are very expensive, and I expected a much higher level of instruction and administration.

I have two children at CDCC. Both started part-time as infants, then 5 days a week as they got…read moreolder. There's a reason this place has been in operation over 40 years and almost entirely by word of mouth recommendations. It's run very well. The standards and expectations of the staff are high. When I look at what my kids have learned at a very young age at CDCC as compared to kids we know in home daycare, it blows them away. In the rare cases where I've had concerns or questions, they were addressed immediately and professionally. The teachers are warm and caring and my kids get lots of hugs and TLC. My husband's work schedule and mine are never the same from day to day, and the flexibility we have with CDCC makes it possible. When I've gone back and forth between 3-5 days, they've always made it work. I don't need to notify them if my kids are coming in earlier than usual. And I can't remember once when they've closed for snow, even when all the schools are closed. Somebody makes it in to make sure they're there for the families. What makes it a full 5 stars is even being the best in town, it's actually a good value compared to some other centers. Central is a nonprofit. Now the Center is having to move out of its downtown location, and we will very likely be following them, even with a further drive, so my younger child can continue to get the benefits her brother got attending CDCC. They have families who drive from as far as Elk Rapids so their kids can attend this program. Obviously I can't recommend them enough.

It was a very fun, and free activity! Though, normally they run after school programs and in school programs, along with offering some programs for adults. Sometimes, you just gotta relax and do some art...do one and you shall achieve the other. No feelings like you have to be the next Van Gogh or anything, just do your own thing. S'all good.
