When I walked up and saw the gentleman who I assumed was the owner pull a pork butt out of the smoker and start shredding it by hand, I knew it was the real deal. Both the pork and Tri-tip were tender, the beans held their texture, the corn bread with a sugar coating was awesome, and the coleslaw had enough (but not too much mayo). Triple Crown BBQ is a small trailer and smoker in the conservatively sized gravel parking lot of a storage facility, across from the AutoZone, between a gas station and tiny zoo. Hand-written signage and two blinking lights to catch your eye. Accepting credit card payment via Square. A spread of sauce bottles by the napkins and plastic cutlery; mustard was my favorite of the bunch, with molasses coming a close second. Quite a few flies congregating among the picnic tables, but those are the pains of the great outdoors. Pick up your order at the window when it's time, bus yourself, and the guys behind the scenes will chat you up to make sure you're happy. Lemonade isn't homemade, so I opted for sweet tea, which was generously poured and just sweet enough without threatening tooth rot. Sadly they were out of sausage, so I mowed through their smokey sampler. I would discover my guess was right that I'd be too full to grab a corn muffin, and they had no greens for sides (not counting coleslaw or pickles). As a brisket girl, I found their sliced beef to be the most disappointing of the four meats-- carved thin, fairly flavorful, but a little dry. Quarter rack of ribs were a bit tough at the dwindling end of the rack, but the sauce was pretty balanced, a fair amount of cartilage was included, and I don't mind some jerky texture. The 1/4 chicken was excellent, tender meat with lots of smokey flavor and the skin alone was as moist as the brisket was dry. I'm still on the fence with their juicy pulled pork: interesting tobacco-esque taste with a hit of vinegar. Not a bad contender on the way home from Luray/Shenandoah. read more

This was such a great experience if I could give 10 stars I would. Amazing food- loved the chicken and ribs the most but the tri-tip and pulled pork was also outstanding. Their personal bbq sauce was a win for all of our families- happy I got some leftover to bring home. And A+ on their potato salad (and I am reeeeally picky on potato salad) we were staying nearby and wanted a great meal with no cooking or cleanup for Father's Day- and they really came through. We waited for over 45minites to get the food. It's a food truck. The wait in line to order was around 10min which is okay, but then after we have paid we had to wait 35-40min to get the actual food. You don't expect such a long wait time when coming to a food truck. Apparently when inquiring 25min in, the chicken was still not ready..why not just tell that in advance? All in all NOT WORTH IT. I read so many comments before I came to this place but the first time we visited they sold out at 2-3pm even though they are closed at 6:30pm. We had to came back in the early morning on the next day but still had to wait in a queue. However, their homemade sauce made our waiting worth it. Absolutely superb in every way, and easily the best BBQ I've had in Virginia. This is a small little BBQ shack in Luray, basically a food truck in a permanent location. It's pretty conveniently located - not too far from the main strip / caverns - and has plenty of outdoor seating despite the small building. The BBQ here is out-of-this-world, and this is from someone so picky about BBQ that he rarely eats it anywhere except one specific church in North Carolina. The pulled pork is absolutely stupendous, the ribs are to die for, the chicken is as juicy as it could ever be, and the flank is just killer. The sauces make the meat better, but you could eat it plain and be just as happy. Even better, the prices are dirt-cheap, meaning that you get a lot of bang for your buck. I had stopped by this place after a spring break visit to Luray Caverns several years ago and it was hands down the best BBQ I'd ever had, so when I was in the area again, I had to come back. Stopped by for a bite before going to Luray Caverns. Shared a sirloin sandwich combo (also got sides of cole slaw and potato salad, and a sweet tea). The combo was only $13! It was a perfect size for 2 not-that-hungry people. They have a ton of BBQ sauces to try, so we sampled all the non-spicy ones. My favorite was the vinegar-y NC sauce, which had a slight kick and very flavorful. Sirloin sandwich was served cold, perfect for a hot 90-degree day. The potato salad was delish, but cole slaw a bit bland. Sweet tea was excellent and hit the spot. Would definitely come back. Service was great (everyone seemed in a cheery mood), and even tho the line was pretty long, it moved fast and we didn't wait too long between ordering and getting our food. The only downside was the number of flies buzzing around the tables where you eat. We just had to stop and we met the nicest, friendliest, down to earth owners (John & Joanne) you would ever want to come across. This is a roadside stand that in my humble opinion is the best BBQ in the area and will rival any BBQ I have had in my lifetime. The smoked meats are excellent and the sides are just as good. We most recently ordered food for our Memorial Day guests. We had the ribs, chicken, pulled pork, beans, potato salad and coleslaw. The meats and the beans were exceptional. The potato salad and the slaw were very good. The slaw is a creamy sweet slaw which went well with the pulled pork. The potato salad was very tasty, but needed a few more potatoes to hit the excellent level. Tripple Crown smokes baby back ribs. I personally prefer St. Louis style, but the ribs were meaty, cooked perfectly and had a nice spicy sauce. The pulled pork and chicken were also ridiculously good! We ate until we could not eat anymore. We have been here a few times in the past and have never been disappointed. Haven't tried the sausage yet, but is on the list for next time. We went here for lunch after our Luray Caverns visit, and we were so glad we did. We ordered the ribs and sampler. Portions are big, so an order can be shared between 2 people who are small eaters or not that hungry. The meats (pulled pork, sirloin, chicken, and ribs) were all tender and not dry. This was my first visit to Triple Crown BBQ. Was visiting friends that live in a near by town. The meats were amazingly prepared and the hospitality was through the roof. A gentleman who I assume was the owner asked us how everything was, I felt like I was sitting in his house ( even though it's outdoor dining) he was so friendly. Saw this place coming back from skyline drive and on the way to Shenandoah caverns (also right after luray caverns). Stopped with my family for lunch we were tempted seeing the smoke from the road. Prices were pretty cheap compared to other conventional bbq places. The place seemed family run and a guy (assuming he was either the manager or owner) greeted us several times and was very friendly. You could really taste the smoke in the ribs and the chicken. We really enjoyed the baked beans too as our favorite side although the homemade cornbread looked good too. We discovered this place last year and headed back yesterday for lunch before heading out from our Shenandoah weekend. Open Fri-Sun, It's situated on rd 211 just about 2 miles from downtown Luray. You order from a trailer then sit down along picnic benches with umbrellas. We got the sampler as shown which at $24 for a heaping plate of delicious pulled pork, ribs, chicken and tri-tip is a great deal. The meats are so Smokey and their ribs are smothered with the spicier of the five house made barbecue sauces they offer. The pulled pork is marinated in fats and delicious juices.We also got the sausage sandwich this time since it isn't part of the sampler. Their sides are yummy too, great heaps of potato salad, coleslaw or baked beans for only $2 a side. The owner is this incredibly nice guy who walks around asking everyone how their food is though he already knows the answer because he is a pro at this! ONLY reason I don't give this place 5 stars is there is no indoor seating. Tried to go here Saturday evening but there was a down pour. But we did come back on Sunday and it was fabulous! Generous portions and great taste. I got the pork bbq sandwich, potato salad and tea. Such flavorful and tender meat. Potato salad was good and yea was not sucky sweet like you find at other bbq restaurants. My husband got ribs and slaw and they were also delicious! Seems to be a family operation and they are very friendly, walking around greeting everyone. Only the rain hadn't kept our other family from partaking. One of the best BBQ experiences I have ever had. From the meats to the corn bread, I was astounded. There is ample outdoor seating or you can just pick up and take it with you. Between my friends and I, we tried almost everything on the menu. The BBQ sauce selection is awesome too, there are 6 different sauces to choose from (all free of charge). For a BBQ place the prices were super reasonable too. The daily desserts are great too, when we went it was pecan pie, and it was 2 dollars a slice, you cannot beat it!! This place is like 1 mile from Luray Caverns and is a must for lunch or dinner. Next time I go to Virginia, I'll be stopping there for lunch again. Pulled pork had amazing flavor but was very fatty I wouldn't call it Carolina style... the sauce is vinegar based but isn't quite good enough for that title. The ribs were the star of our meal they were tender and seasoned well. The chicken was definitely not worth having at all... very heavy smoke flavor but not tender and I couldn't taste any other type of seasoning. Tri Tip was also super heavy on the smoke flavor but again no other seasoning was discernible and it is served sliced cold.... Baked beans were pretty average... potato salad tasted as boring as it looked. All in all with such high reviews I think I had my hopes way too high for this place.... This place is a small trailer on the side of the road. We found ourselves waiting in line for 45minutes and then another 20 minutes for our food. Although the place is slow moving with minimal staff, the food was good with large portions! We seek out BBQ joints often in our travels and find this place to be above average on meat flavor, moisture and texture. The pulled pork comes pre-dressed with a Carolina sauce. Pricing was fair at $12 for a large sandwich, one side and drink. I'd recommend the owner post a menu board on the deck facing the parking lot. So straight and to the point...DELICIOUS! Even though they haven't yet opened for the season, John agreed to provide pulled pork and coleslaw for our family reunion last weekend. The pork was great...perfectly smoked with tons of flavor. The NC vinegar sauce hit the spot. The coleslaw was the perfect complement. I couldn't stop eating them both.
