    Mapo Tofu
    Lowell O.

This was a nice find. The place is nicely decorated, has free parking, and serves outstanding Szechuan dishes. We started with their cold Szechuan noodles. Very tastey. Great texture. Plenty of delicious chili oil. Next we had their soup dumplings (xiao long bao). These weren't bad but they were not at the same level as their Szechuan dishes. So we returned to Szechuan province dishes for the rest of the meal: mapo tofu, ants in a tree, and salt and pepper fish. All three entrees were delicious. Of the three, we all agreed that ants on a tree was our favorite. Is it spicy? Absolutely! Is is a bit oily? Duh... it's Szechuan. Does it bring the Szechuan peppercorn forward? Absolutely! It's guaranteed to numb your tongue in that delightful way that only this type of pepper can accomplish. The mapo tofu has that delightful signature texture. And it's flavor profile is very similar to ants in a tree but it was a bit less spicy and had a bit less Szechuan pepper. It came with plenty of rice and was a great dish. The salt and pepper fish was topped nicely with a nice mixture of garlic, onions, and bell pepper, all finely diced. We just drank water but they offered beer, wine and sake. It's really a very nice place. I'm really glad we went!

Mongolian Beef and Cucumber Salad were delicious! The pot stickers missed the mark. They were definitely the frozen kind. The service was great! Very friendly and attentive. Only 1 guy working the dining room, but there were only 4 tables and he handled it with ease. It was a nice relaxed atmosphere. Clean, inviting place. The restrooms were clean as well. Definitely a good place if you like traditional Chinese food instead of American Chinese. I will be back to try a few other dishes that reminded me of when I lived in China.

We are on a quest to find the best szechuan food in Houston. The breading on this chicken was AMAZING. Not sure how their achieve it but it's easily the best spicy crispy chicken (can be called other things at other places but most szechuan places in Houston have an item similar. The wonton soup was good, rice was hot and fresh, and Mongolian beef was tender. Will definitely be back for the chicken though, easily the standout :) service and ambiance were also great!

Clean establishment and very attentive wait staff. Most of the food was really good! The screaming chicken, the green beans, and the fried rice was really good. We also had the Salt and pepper ribs and that was just ok... a little tough and overcooked. The worst dish was the soup dumplings. They were super bland and not tasty. It was a nice find in an unfamiliar area. Parking was easy and there is plenty of spaces.

Dry pot lamb, chicken and Three Peppers Taro Chicken (Bone-In) , and Beef Tripe with Chili

We stopped by for lunch and was very pleased with how clean and modern the interior was. We had a great experience overall and really like the food we ordered: Sliced beef and tendon in chili sauce, Eggplant in spicy sour sauce, three peppers taro chicken, and dry pot lamb. The portion sizes were really big and we got an entire pot of rice for free which we loved. I wish there was more chicken in the three peppers taro chicken, but the flavor was rich and the chicken was tender. Egg plant was pretty classic, but well done in texture and sauce, the sliced beef and tendon was spicy and chewy, but covered in peanuts for a crunchy texture. The lamb was delicious and had lots of other ingredients mixed in for a fun eating experience.

Chinese food will always take a spot in my heart. Houston is actually great for Szechuan food. I've been to all the Szechuan places in the loop and from each place I have different favorite items. Given this place 5 stars because of the overall experience and vibes and decor in terms of the Chinese food in the loop. Food- (in order of preference) mapo tofu, pepper corn fish, triple pepper shrimp, cumin lamb. Service - fast just like any Chinese restaurant!

I've been here twice now, once for lunch on a weekday and once for dinner on a weekend. Average: 3.5 The first experience I had no issues. Food was yummy and everything ran smoothly. Especially important during lunch time, efficiency. Loved the green beans like wow, stand out dish. I learned from the staff that all of these Triple Pepper(s) have different owners. Second experience we had a pretty meh time. The wait time for everything was slow, they were understaffed clearly but the waitress tried to do her best. Unfortunately even the food dishes weren't that great. We ordered some different things and they were just okay. To note: The chili wonton app: sauce was oddly sweet?Never had a chili wonton like this before.

    Dry Pot Lamb

Food was excellent!! Service was top notch!! My wife ordered the Boiled Beef and I had the Dry Pot Lamb. We were very impressed with everything at this restaurant. The flavor and tenderness of the meat was unbelievable! Definitely will be back to this gem

Had higher expectations for this place based on Google reviews and they were not met. The only 5 star worthy dish was the green beans. The twice cooked pork was good, but not amazing; grandma's fish tofu had a sea of peanuts on top and tasted more like crunchy porridge than an actual entree. Chili oil wontons had skin that was too thick.

Popped in this Weds night around happy hour and all I can say is I'm so glad I did!!! AND I never thought I'd be reviewing one of my faves, Chinese Sichuan , let alone giving it five stars , ( on my first time in) and then daring to add that I enjoyed it MORE than any other Sichuan I've had all year!!!! But yes, Triple Pepper on W.Gray delivered! From our host / waiter Brian, who was funny, helpful , attentive. suggestive, to all the numbing , spicy , unctuous goodness of all the dishes me and my crew ordered, we had a blast! My new Go/to when I'm craving Chinese Sichuan goodness!!

    Pork with Preserved Mustard Greens
    Kacee T.

I've seen a few of these restaurants driving around Houston and never had the urge to go with the idea that it was just a franchise Chinese restaurant but I was SO wrong. So glad that they are spread out throughout the city so I don't have to drive far when I get the craving for Szechuan food. My Ranking in order: 1. Scallion Pancake - flakey, crispy, not chewy at all paired with a sweet and numbing spice sauce 2. Mongolian beef - although it's lacking in color and unappealing to the eye. The perfectly velveted and seasoned beef went so well with the meal 3. Pork with mustard green - not overly fatty at all, the mustard green helps cut down on the heaviness of this dish !Caution if you're not used to Chinese preserved vegetable taste! 4. Spicy Crispy Chicken - stayed crispy the whole meal but was covered in a mountain of dried chili I hardly touched, good flavor Dandan noodles and seasonal vegetables (water spinach) was nothing special and exactly the way you have it anywhere else. Usually not one to like Szechuan food but I enjoyed this meal a lot!

    Screaming chicken
    Ms. Wong ..

Very flavorful food. Good service. Parking lot available. They can make spicy dishes so great for those looking for real spicy dishes. I really liked the Screaming Chicken. It had dark chicken. The chicken was tender. I recommend this place.

This was previously the Pepper Twins location and this might be a rebrand? Plenty of parking in the front parking lot. Interior is clean and decently modern. The menu looks new and revamped with a better quality print. However, the positives taper off here; the food we ordered for lunch was subpar in terms of authenticity and taste. We got the dan dan noodle (3.5/5) and tripe (4/5) for appetizers; solid start. For mains, we shared (family style) the kung pao chicken (1/5), Mongolian beef (3/5), and shredded pork with sweet sour garlic sauce (3/5). The kung pao chicken was not good; the ingredients in it aren't authentic to the dish itself at all and the dish didn't taste like its namesake. I initially wasn't sure exactly what we got served but it was very sad once our server confirmed that it is kung pao chicken. The Mongolian beef was slightly tough and didn't taste like expected either. The dish doesn't taste or really look like Mongolian beef. The shredded pork was also a bit off in terms of flavor. We just had these same dishes in actual China and these dishes are so off of the OG flavor profile. For a more fair comparison, if you compare these dishes to other Chinese Sichuan spots in town, the same comment can still be made; the ingredients and flavor in the dishes we ordered were unfortunately underwhelming and bland (how?).

Do not order the General Tso chicken. It's legit 90% breading. It also doesn't even taste good so there's no point to even finish eating it.

5 Stars - Authentic Szechuan that absolutely nails the classics…read more During our short trip to Houston, as a custom, we were determined to find real Szechuan food, and luckily we found Hu's Kitchen. The location is a bit unassuming, and parking is definitely tough (the spaces are very shallow), but the second we walked through the doors and smelled the Szechuan peppercorns, I knew we were in exactly the right place. I generally judge a Szechuan restaurant by their 夫妻肺片 (Fuqi Feipian)--which they cleverly name "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" on the menu. They completely nailed it. The beef, tripe, and tendon were incredibly cohesive together, yet you could tell each component was prepared and marinated in a slightly different way to perfectly highlight its specific texture. The chili oil was right on the spot. We went through a massive bowl of rice just eating this dish alone. Honestly, if I weren't feeding a family of four, I could have just ordered that and been perfectly happy. While the Fuqi Feipian proves their skill with dry dishes, the 水煮魚片 (Fish in Szechuan Hot Chili Oil) proves their skill with wet ones. It's another must-order. The execution was flawless--we didn't just finish the tender fish chunks, we ate every last piece of cabbage soaked in that incredible chili broth. For my two daughters who can't handle the heat, we ordered the fried rice, garlic pork ribs with onion, and the 紅燒獅子頭 (Giant Meatball with Cabbage). The giant meatball was spectacular. The kids completely devoured it on their own, but I managed to steal a bite, and it instantly brought back childhood memories of exactly how this dish is supposed to taste. We also had the Dan Dan Noodles, which were great and rounded out the meal perfectly. I loved all of the dishes we tried. Should we ever find ourselves in Houston again, we will absolutely be revisiting this hidden gem.

No complaints here since we were starving from an 8 hour road trip. The Dan Dan Noodles...I had high expectations but sadly this dish fell short. I recommend Hu's Cooking to use a bigger bowl and more sauce because it was difficult to mix the noodles and the sauce wasn't...saucing, unfortunately. I wish there was more flavor in this dish. The Scallion Pancake was super over-fried and oily. See image in my review. The outer parts of the pancake were fried to a crisp and only a small circumference in the center stayed chewy. I know Chinese tends to be oily but this pancake soaked up way too much oil. Half a Peking duck: super great price for so much meat. The difficulty when eating this dish is gnawing the meat off the sharp bones of the duck. Mapo Tofu with white rice: pretty easy staple, no complaints here. Dinner on a Saturday was packed but we got seated quickly and food arrived fast.

I think we may have went on an off day because I have tried takeout form this place that was delicious, but on this day the food wasn't my favorite. We did overall enjoyed our experience and time and I would recommend giving this place a try! We ordered a total of 5 dishes and everything seemed very authentic to Sichuan cooking. With Sichuan cuisine though, a lot of the food will be on the oily side, so keep that in mind. - Eggplant In Spicy Sauce (5/5): Definitely order this dish! You can tell the eggplant was prepared well because it retained its beautiful purple color and luscious shape. The flavor was sweet and savory seeped well into the eggplant. My only comment would be that there wasn't a strong garlic flavor, but it was still so tasty I think it deserved that 5/5! - Mapo Tofu (2.5/5): I came here specifically for the mapo tofu but was left a bit disappointed. The flavor was pretty good and had that strong Sichuan pepper spice that lingers after a while. My issue with the tofu was the consistency of the sauce. I found it to be very thick and clumpy in an unpleasant way, almost like eating little gelatin pieces. I would probably come back to try it again just in case this was a bad batch, but it's hard to compete with wanna boa's mapo tofu. - Spicy and Crispy Chicken (4/5): Pretty juicy and crispy chicken with a slight kick. I love anything fried chicken so I did enjoy this dish but it was pretty standard and there wasn't much to write about. - Red Oil Dumplings (3/5): Pretty standard oil dumplings. They weren't really spicy which would be good for people who can't handle spice. I think I would've liked a bit more meat filling but overall not bad. - Dan Dan Noodles (3/5): I loved the texture of the noodles but I found the sauce to be kinda slippery which made it hard adhere to the noodles. I also thought the flavor could've been a bit stronger. Service/Ambiance: the interior of this place was super cute, especially the upstairs area. I loved the dim lighting and tiny table lamps which gave this place a cozy romantic feeling. The outside was also interesting with an all black exterior and no sign. That might make it hard to notice or find the restaurant, but that did give it a more hidden feeling which was nice. Parking was also abundant and service was great!

And their other menu items are fire as well! We went on a Sunday late evening. We had a 9 pm airport pickup at IAH so it was a perfect opportunity to grab a spectacular dinner and make the 30+ minute drive out to IAH totally worth it. Parking lot wasn't too full so that wasn't an issue. While the neighborhood ain't River Oaks luxury, it ain't too scary either. We kept it simple - ordered a whole duck and Bamboo House Special Noodle with Beef. This place ain't cheap but the food is worth every penny. It was very busy that evening so it's not a well-kept secret but also proves that eventually, Houstonians will figure out where the good food is. The duck was near perfect. They serve the duck with the pancakes (as opposed to the buns like at Arco) which is my preference. The soup that comes with it was also extremely flavorful. And the house special noodles with beef - oh my. I swear it's just one really long noodle so you may be frustrated trying to divvy up the family style bowl, but the labor is worth it. So good... I highly recommend ordering the duck ahead of time, but we were lucky enough to snag one of the last ducks when we arrived around 7 pm on a Sunday evening. The waitress was super friendly and upbeat and the restaurant is older but well maintained. You can see where the food is being prepared/cooked and you can see ducks being cooked/warmed behind a glass window. The duck was absolutely spectacular with the perfect seasoned and tender meat accompanied by well rendered crispy skin. I love how the pancakes are paper thin and pair well with the scrumptious duck and other toppings. They also provide sugar and plum sauce as additional toppings which I thought was interesting but not my cup of tea. The duck soup was extremely flavorful and full bodied and went well with the duck. The noodles were also amazing with likely hand pulled noodles served with an abundance of tender beef and vegetables with a little Sichuan kick. I was intrigued by a strawberry chicken dish that I saw on the menu and I plan to try it the time. My diagnosis: hands down the best Peking duck in the greater Houston area!
