Tourists: Buy Clothes Here…read more People have frequently asked me: where should I buy clothes when I go to Paris? My answer is, at least go to Tati. In the world's probably most fashionable city, my old hometown and love of my life, Paris, Tati is like the Walmart of clothing stores. But this is not a bad thing. In any case, it deserves an English-language review for all the tourists out there. In many ways, Tati one of the world's greatest clothing stores. It is *so* unbelievably inexpensive given the quality, that what it pulls off is nothing short of miraculous. For example, I got a pair of pants for 5 euro that fit perfectly (rare for me, as I'm a little dude), looked awesome (grey checkered pattern), were comfy (wool with artificial silk lining), and lasted for two years. Jackets, shirts, shoes, my wardrobe is littered with Tati clothing. Some of it holds up better than others, but it's kind of like Ikea: you buy it knowing that it might last forever, or it might fall apart in 6 months. But it's cheap enough that if it falls apart, you can replace it. Tati's fashion picks up on Parisian styles. It doesn't always pull them off well or accurately, but there is inevitably some work of genius that costs less than a crepe. My one issue, and it's a big one, is that I have no idea where these clothes are coming from. I shudder to think at the possibilities. Developing world sweat factories? Underpaid local laborers in hidden garment shops in the Sentier? Trucks come by Tati every morning -- I have no idea where these trucks come from -- and drop piles of clothing onto the street in front of the store. Local ladies then run and grab what they can. The atmosphere outside the Barbes Tati, like the whole neighborhood, is like a crazy bazaar. People hawking all kinds of goods, makeshift booths, men trying to get you to buy cigarettes, repeating "maroboro maroboro" over and over again. Tati is sketch. It so sketch that it's fun to shop there, knowing that it's sketch, but you also feel guilty about it at the same time. There's a certain slumming chic to Tati that the French middle-class kids seem to love. The Tati shopping bag, with its huge colorful pink logo, is ubiquitous in Paris. It's a status symbol, although I don't know of what status. But given that almost no tourists go to Tati, if you're carrying one of these bags, people will think you're a local, and you'll get treated better generally. So if you're going to go anywhere, go to Tati first and keep the bag during your whole trip.

I feel like every country I've been to has a kind of equivalent--a brand that has current trends for affordable prices. Unfortunately, it also feels and looks cheap. I rather spend a bit more and get something nicer or go to a second hand shop. They do have a pretty big store with a massive selection--not just clothes but also random beauty products, home goods, and kids stuff. Overall, I'd say it's worth popping into. You might be able to get some basics or frilly under garments.

They carry Kusmi tea and Frech mustard and high quality flavored salt. There's also a nice range of small French souvenirs like mugs, eyeglass cases, notebooks, and beautifully tin packaged chocolates near the register that would make great gifts. I was also happy to see a good vegan selection, including yogurts, cheeses, tofu, soy beef and other imitation meats. They have a quite large selection of wines ans beer as well. If you're looking for inexpensive French snacks, souvenirs, or local products all in one place, this is definitely worth stopping by. Make sure you keep youd receipt to exit the store.

I have experienced persecution and aggressive behavior from their security on multiple occasions; i have decided that enough is enough. On one occasion the security guard waited until i was already in the sidewalk and ripped/dragged my cart out of my hands; in addition my arms were full with 2 large shopping bags. He couldn't care less that i might have dropped everything. He then proceeded to put his hands in one of my bags and take out a tea container to "scan" it. I could not believe his entitlement. I suppose it bothers them to see people with an abundance of groceries. I spend at least a thousand euros a month there out of convenience; unfortunately the treatment from their security is despicable. Not to mention there are various "check points" in the store and "mazes" of clothes, toys, home articles etc, before you can finally exit the store. There is also a detector and security cameras even by the tea isles, and store employees attending the self checkout. My question is : what are these security guards even doing there? They accuse, harass and aggress as they please. It is not a pleasant experience for the consumer, let alone for a woman, on the contrary. It is an experience full of unnecessary anxiety and injustice. If i could report them to a higher court trust me i would; to that height is the level of unpleasantness i have experienced from doing my groceries there. If you have a choice of going somewhere else, my suggestion is you do so. Especially if you are planning on doing a large shopping spree. I suppose they do not mind losing loyal customers. And yes i am a woman; and i have been by myself in each incident.

The bonus here is if you spend over 50 Euro on the food they will deliver it free to your residence. I was able to get everything I needed here for the most part. I appreciate that convenience of Monoprix, that you can do some light clothing and accessory shopping as well as food. If you have a car, they have a parking garage attached underneath the store. I believe parking is free for the first hour or so. I also got a rewards card, since in Paris Monoprix is a chain and was happy to see that I scored some extra discounts on my shopping.

My girlfriend and I walked into this Champs-Elysees Zara to come up on some jackets out of necessity. This was the biggest Zara I have ever been in, it was so overwhelming. They had a crazy selection and I tried on damn near everything. My main purchase was a jacket that I can only describe as something a chic Tim Riggins would wear. A French Tim Riggins if you will. I also bought a tweed Zara Origins suit jacket that I will likely never wear, 2 button downs, and a black zip up sweater that fit perfectly under my French Tim Riggins jacket. I'm knocking off stars because I LOATHED this check out system. It essentially follows you with cameras and rings them up right when you walk in. It missed an item and I couldn't add it manually. I was so frustrated that I went to the normal check out line to have a human being help me, but they directed me back to the robot check out line. Brutal. The quality of the items is pretty good. I especially liked the beautiful blue ceramic plates and plant holders made in Portugal that I bought here. They also have very affordable and cute mugs / coffee cups / teacups, cheap but able to withstand the microwave and dishwasher. One of the times I came by they had a 50% off deal on silver moka pots. I felt the items I purchased here, while low-priced, were of noticeably better quality than some extremely affordable crockery I got from IKEA. They sell decent little sandwiches ready to eat on the spot for less than 3 euros! Sodas are just 1.5 euros as opposed to the much more rapey prices around town of 3-5 euros for a 16 oz bottle. Plus the macarons are less than 1 euro a piece here, which is about the cheapest I saw them anywhere around town. Most people I ran into could not speak much English but still were able to help me out with pantomiming and a few chosen words. lol But they were always nice and figured out a way to communicate an answer to me. The big one we visited often was a great place to grab breakfast, lunch, snacks, clothes, flowers, and other odds and ends. If you're in need and in Paris make sure you visit the Monoprix! Accessibility: the store we visited most often was good. Like most places in Europe it was a bit small, but at least they had a ramp and elevator (and escalator) which was great for my wife.
