Its a really well appointed appartment for two people, with a spacious lounge, nice kitchen with fridge, electric cooker and microwave and one bedroom. The lounge has the basic sky tv package so after a hard day on the hills you can veg out in front of some junk tv! Its only a three minute walk into the centre of Betws y Coed with all the amenities it offers. Only one thing was disappointing really - there is no bathroom as such, there is a toilet with wash basin off the lounge, and in the bedroom there is what is described as a 'double' shower but in reality is just a large cubicle with a very temperamental electric shower - don't expect to soak your aching bones in a bath after a hard day's mountain walking!

Coupled with the backdrop of the imposing Welsh hills, over which a storm was brewing, this was a great location for a hotel, save for the static caravan site. On entering, the whole place was opulently decorated, if slightly shabby in places, the central staircase was particularly impressive. Things started to go a little awry through as we checked in, as the person behind reception gestured to us 'Your rooms up the stairs on the left', rather dismissively. The room itself was tidy enough, with a good view of the hilly scenery, but again the decoration was in need of a bit of attention. The bed as it turned out, creaked even if you stretched your leg and was very uncomfortable, leading to one of the worst nights sleep I've had in a hotel. The tiny TV in the room would have better situated on the wall adjacent to the bed, rather than on a set of drawers, from which it was difficult for two people to watch. As Qype stars were falling off at an alarming rate, I decided to look for some positives. The bathroom was large and spacious, but unfortunately rang out a symphony of noise as you flushed the loo (air in the pipes), the bath when I tried to run one, was lukewarm and the frosted glass only covered the bottom half of the bathroom window! As we watched the football results before going down for an evening meal, the strong smell of fried food wafted under the bedroom door from the kitchen, delightful, still on a plus we knew when our breakfast was ready in the morning! As we descended down for our evening meal, the Maenan Abbey was definitely at a solitary star, however, our evening meal was a very pleasurable experience. Friendly staff beckoned us into a large lounge area, bathed in fading September light and we were seated in some rather grandiose armchairs whilst we had a drink from the well-stocked bar. In these pleasant surrounding we chose our three dishes from the menu for a set price of £12.95 - bargain! When our starters were ready, we were taken into a very impressive, if again slightly worn dining room. The meal was excellent, with the highlight being the superb Tempura King Prawn starter, and the sea bass and steak mains, which came with a slight supplementary price. Just for this meal alone, I have added a star. After getting little sleep, the Welsh breakfast was great, just what we needed for long journey. Would we dine here again? - definitely, if we had not stayed here and only dined, Maenan Abbey would be looking at a solid four stars. The accommodation however, leaves a lot to be desired, it could be so good, with just a bit of money spent on it!

However I did get to visit recently when the organisation I work for opted to hold their Christmas meal there. Apparently the area director had been there earlier in the year and was so impressed he decided it was the ideal venue. The first thing to bear in mind if you do intend to visit (or attend a party) is that it's pretty much impossible to reach the Abbey via any public transport other than a taxi. The road outside is busy and doesn't have a footpath, the nearest railway station is some distance away across fields and buses only run down the other side of the valley. Fortunately I managed to arrange a lift. The building itself is quite impressive and inside has a kind of authentic shabbiness that somehow adds character to the place. In the lobby is a piano that is played by a teddy bear which isn't something you see every day. As for the food, well it was better than I had anticipated, although the menu did sound impressive. I had a duck starter, small slices of duck served with a pot of red onions in some sort of dressing and a small pot of chutney. Very tasty, well presented (a little bit Masterchef) and just the right size. My main course was sirloin of beef, two thick cut slices served on a bed of mashed potato. Each table got plates of roast potatos and vegetables to share. There was plenty to go around and on the whole most people enjoyed their food. The one exception seemed to be the lamb. For dessert I had mandarian and chocolate triangle with honeycomb ice cream, very nice (not surprisingly it tasted a bit like a Jaffa cake) and again a lot of thought had gone into the presentation. Service was efficient and friendly which all added to a very enjoyable afternoon.

They just need a real fire rather than a gas one (or even gas looks-like-fire one). Anyhow the ale and wine was good, followed by a nice coffee. All in all very pleasant. No sign of the old space invaders machine which was such a great feature of old.

The Lilly is like a coin, it has two sides…read more On one hand you approach a building that's in need of a lick of paint, inside and out. It would benefit from some new carpets. Maybe even some new wall paper. But on the other hand the staff are delightful and friendly. The food really good and the room we got ended up being way beyond our initial expectations. Not to mention the excellent sea view. We booked a room in Llandudno so we wouldn't need to drive as far on the day our ferry departed and we found the Lilly. The previously mentioned room had a luxuriously comfy bed. A great big flat screen tv also. The bathroom was as big as the bedroom, with an amazing dresser-sink. Did I mention the bath was also a jacuzzi? Heck yeah. The Lilly may be a bit threadbare on the surface, but underneath (and in room 8) there's more to be found. I'm a fan.

On the Saturday night me & my partner were practicality blown away with the food we ate in the restaurant, in total I think we had 6 or 7 courses that cost us just over £30 each great food at a great price, we finished in the restaurant & had few drinks in the bar area which again was nice & friendly. This weekend just gone we ate off the Sunday lunch menu & can't Believe how cheap it is for 3 course & what you are getting, if anyone wants to get there money worthy ignore any other reviews & get yourself here, beautiful & on the sea front & the views from the restaurant are wonderful. I honestly wanted to just stay in the cosy, beautiful room and watch the UK top 40 on my tv all day long and rest and relax and enjoy life. forget the ridiculously expensive hotels that face the sea. this place is a hop, skip and a jump from the boardwalk. and nothing beats the service of a bed and breakfast. so personal and friendly! It's a family-owned and managed bed and breakfast and i swear if i'm ever lucky enough to return to Wales, I'm staying here again. I was on a 2-week long trip to Europe and going all over the place and had a huge suitcase with me and i didn't know there was no elevator. I have a bunch of herniated discs in my neck and lower back so I'd asked if anyone could help me with the suitcase and his young daughter said that she'd take care of it for me and i looked and her and said oh gosh no, let's do it together! but then her dad came by and did it himself and insisted on it and not taking a tip and i felt so horrid but so grateful. they also helped with directions and suggestions on where to go and what to see. i didn't have breakfast there but they have a beautiful breakfast area and people there were enjoying their Welsh b'fast. i grabbed some juice and was off to explore this phenomenal and unbelievably friendly town of Llandudno. The room was super clean, the bed was super comfortable, the tv had a million channels including American ones, but who's watching American tv in Wales? not me! the bathroom was excellent. great water pressure, abundance of hot water, the shower area might be small for an american dude but it was perfect for me. the day i left i had to catch an early train to london and the owner's son was SO kind and woke up at 5A.M. just to help me lug that damn suitcase downstairs. WHO DOES THAT???? i insisted on tipping and thanked him profusely. and in case you're wondering, that suitcase finally died in London and i bought a smaller suitcase to fly home with. so don't worry guys, next time i'll handle my suitcase myself ;)

There is no parking, as advertised and I didn't think it would be as much of a problem as it was. In the end only parked 5-10 minute walk away and it was free. The outside of this place is one of the best in Llandudno let alone the street. It looks like it should be some where warmer, there are palm trees and everything is a sandy colour. The room itself is on the top floor, there were sloping ceilings and a very dark corner of the room but it is well decorated as is the bathroom. There is a bath with a shower attachment which cannot be mounted to the wall because of the low ceilings. The bathroom itself is large and airy with good lighting. The only pet peeve I have is it is fitted with a saniflow pipe system, this is when there is a box plumbed into the toilet and all pipes from bath and sink go directly into it and it pumps water out of that part of the house; usually used when there is no existing plumbing. The noise, oh the noise. I'm surprised we didn't have complaints when both of you want a bath and the water has to drain through that motor. The breakfast room was beautifully decorated with bay windows and a filling again like you should be abroad somewhere, the food was delicious and the portions good considering that it was free. Staff were friendly and courteous. I would stay again, but would think hard about it in the busy times for parking. I would also request a room on the lower floors.
