The barman are brilliant, so friendly and accommodating, and you're not standing 4 deep from the bar to order a drink like other places. On Friday's they host a regular vinyl night from Turn It On, a pretty unique night out for Sligo and its consistently good - they mix it up with a range of different people playing their vinyl collections on the decks every week, it could be shoegaze one night, house another! There's always some sort of music night on here, on various nights of the week - they're quite active on social media, so check out their facebook page to see whats on. The drink prices are unbeatable, you'll have change from a tenner if you order two spirits (and a dash in each). There's a tiny wee smoking area down the back near the toilets, which is likely part of its attraction, so you're not left loitering outside the front door on the street - you still feel part of the place, by not leaving the building. The interior is standard for an Irish pub but there's a eclectic collections of curios behind the bar - reflecting the owner Paul's tastes, and by extension the cooler clientele it attracts - stickers from the famous Ace Bar in London for example. The beef stew was excellent. The lamb liver was very good, though a tiny bit overdone. As good as the food was the ambience and the staff. It's a bit off the beaten path, and that means it attracts more locals than tourists. The staff were friendly and very forthcoming with their own personal favorite items on the menu. Worth the effort for a little bit of extra walking. Be advised that they do charge for a pitcher of water.

Shoot the Crows is legendary in the trad music world. I found that it wasn't your typical quaint…read moregrocer-pub with classic wooden tables and a jolly old man at the bar. Instead, it was a narrow gothic bar filled with stained glass, nooks and crannies and an old musty smell. If Harry Potter had jumped out of the shadows I wouldn't have been surprised! The musicians sat at the front of the pub and when we arrived only amounted to three: button accordion, rhythm guitar and flute. Within twenty minutes or so, however, a couple more fiddlers showed up, one who was a man with a newsboy cap and a whimsical smile on his face. The moment he began playing it was obvious that he was an expert at courting a crowd. He had that charisma and vitality. A bar patron informed us that this fiddler was none other than Steve Wickham of the famous band the Waterboys, a musician widely regarded as the world's best rock fiddle player. According to what we were told, he lived just outside Sligo and loved to frequent Shoot the Crows for trad sessions. His playing infused the session with a frenetic energy and they played Music for a Found Harmonium, as well as a set of Maid Behind the Bar, Cooleys and Sally Gardens. Wonderful renditions! The atmosphere at the pub was very welcoming and supportive of the musicians and due to the length of the bar, if music wasnt your thing, you could easily have sat at the back of the place, unbothered by the tinkling up front. But if you like trad and don't mind a little grungy goth, you'll find some magic here.

'Shoots' as its affectionately known locally, would be my first choice for a drink out with friends. By virtue of the 'cosy' atmosphere of this wee pub, this place fills up quickly at weekends. For a catch up with friends the coveted seat down the back with the roaring turf fire is the place to be. The bar staff are great, always up for a chat, and don't throw us out on our ear when we've overstayed our welcome on Saturday night. Its that sort of place, you'd happily spend the evening here - meeting old and new faces. Despite coming here over the past five years when I'm home in Sligo, I've never actually been here for a trad session, shockingly as it seems to be renowned for it. The seating is a bit battered, so ladies - don't wear your best hosiery for fear of getting it caught on a nail or whatever, and the toilets are a bit grotty, but that's not what makes this place five star. The soundtrack is the excited hum of conversation. No TV playing football on a loop, a feature that detracts from some of my other favourite pubs in this town. The famous window at the front changes design every few months - painted by a local artist, one of the many things that make this place unique. Don't overlook this spot on a trip to Sligo!

Since we weren't exactly mixing it up with multiple nights at similar pubs, it was essential to add some variety to our ordering. Not that I couldn't eat roast every night, but the wife needed a few more choices. It was no problem here, and being on the first level plenty of fast, efficient wait staff. The only problem is what to order. If Irish Pubs are typically like the American Diner, the choices at The Belfry are like Cheesecake Factory! So much food, only two rugby match halves! My wife singled out the lamb stew on the way in the door, so she was locked in from the starting gun. I was torn but not going to veer too far from something huge-meat. I almost, almost got the Marc's Baked Ribs. A last second check-swing; I chose the Joint of Sherlocks Irish Beef. If it sounds like you'd be down for the count after consuming that, you'd be right. Way better than an earlier roast dish in another town, it restored my faith in that Irish pub staple. Back to those ribs, the table next store got them and I definitely had order envy. As if I weren't headed toward the coma cliff at 79 kph (nod to all you metric lovers which I'm not), I decided to put the pedal to the floor when after spotting the beer flight poster on the wall. Even better, you could pick any three! I'm in: light to dark. All local, of course I'm a tourist so one choice had to be Guinness. Thank goodness my wife is terrified of me driving in the left because I could do with the nappy-nap on the way to the coast. Nice all around time here, exceeding my expectations and dispelling any leeriness of a tourist trap. I'll return if I can on my next trip to the Mecca of Sligo.
