I don't know how to rate this salon, sometimes I have a wonderful experience here but other times not so much. The negative experiences have to typically do with scheduling, their online booking feature not working properly, the front desk being totally unaccommodaying when you are late and being argumentative. All I have to say is April is fantastic and I hate leaving her but Im not sure its worth the aggravation. Had my hair cut in March, the place was highly recommended, I was told that it was difficult to get an appointment with John, so I called 2 months in advance. John is a very likable person, but not good for my hair. The decor of the salon is beautiful, the girls at the reception are nice, maybe a bit cold, in snobbish way. But that is not a big deal. The service is expensive: $70 for haircut. It was bad; When I saw the razor I screamed: NO!! my hair is too fine and flat, it cannot handle the razor. He said that he knew how to use the razor. Obviously not, at least not on my hair. I looked like a doll whose hair had been cut by a 5 years old. I had to go to another hairdresser to fix the mess. read more

When I went to Tru Salon in July, I hadn't gotten my hair cut for 2 years and 8 months. Trims, yes, but cut more than a few inches - I absolutely didn't trust ANYONE anymore. Then I met my good friend's fiance who is a stylist at Tru. I took her card and took the plunge! It turned out to be one of the best things I've ever done for myself. I went in for my haircut on a Thursday afternoon, right after work hours. The salon was super busy but buzzing like a well-running machine. Though its not a big space, its impressive, really clean, bright and well-organized. There's lots to look at in the waiting area, from salon products to jewelry and tea. Comfy chairs too, though the waiting area is small. I checked in and the cashier offered me refreshments. My friend/stylist stopped to say hi to me before getting ready for the cut, and then she offered me refreshments. The "apprentice" who washed my hair ALSO offered me refreshments! Like, really GREAT service by people who are happy to work there, want to take care of you, and are happy about what they're doing. I was super impressed and it was already a good experience before the scissors even came out! Kris really cared about what I wanted to do with my hair, and what I wanted the "end effect" to be. For me, it was taking the plunge and chopping off 7-9 inches, and I wanted something more manageable to work with that would frame my face and I could still pull back. Not even 25 minutes later, and after one of the most relaxing conversations I've ever had, she was done working with the scissors, the razor, and the hair dryer. I had the haircut I needed, with short layers, angled a little in front with a gorgeous side sweep. The cut just grazed my collarbone and I can't believe she was so fast! It looked so good I almost looked like I had a wig on, my hair was so much thicker, and healthier and great looking. Friends have asked me if I got my hair cut again since because its just growing out beautifully. At $65 it was well worth it for one of the BEST haircuts I've ever had! read more

I frequent here as it is very convenient for me since I live in the area as well as have the ability to book all types of services in one spot! *Manicures/Pedicures- Melissa + Jenn both do amazing jobs. My nails always look awesome and last! The only thing I will say is that I would book an express pedicure and save yourself the extra $20 because the only difference is you get a leg massage. I wish they would change that because it's a bit pricey for a classic pedicure. *Waxing Services--Ask for Danielle, she has the ability to be easy and gentle with you. Plus shape and maintain your eyebrows beautifully. Before coming to the salon, I was going to a previous place where I used to live so I am VERY particular about my eyebrows. Danielle reassured me by explaining and asking me how I want them done and sure enough they look amazing! *Facial/Massage Services--Again, Danielle does wonders when you're getting these services. She makes sure to ask you what you need or looking for in your massage (I.e. trouble areas, ) and makes sure she gets all that tension out. I have sensitive skin, so she always gives me an amazing facial. I always leave feeling refreshed and pampered. Her knowledge and techniques are things that are very valuable when getting services--especially facials! Went in to get my hair and make up done for a wedding. Asked if they could blow out my hair & curl it. They just blew it out and never curled it. I mentioned I had straight hair and that's why I wanted it curled so by the time I got to the wedding it would look like a blow out. Went to get my makeup done and the lady had no idea what she was doing. She mentioned she was trained professional. When she stated she doesn't wear a lot of make up or doesn't like putting on fake lashes, I was a little worried. Try not to judge a book by its cover but she put my lashes on backwards. Asked for contouring and she didn't know what that was. Not sure what her definition of a trained professional is. Will say the staff is nice and clean, beautiful space. I received a gift certificate from a good friend for TRU. I finally used it today and cashed it in on a 60 minute deep tissue massage with added scalp massage. I was hesitant just because of the horrible massages I have gotten in the past. The salon is beautiful, well styled and comfortable waiting area. Diana gave me my services, she was really friendly, cute and super bubbly; my worries were instantly calmed. Privacy is given for undressing (yes i have had an experience where they didn't give you privacy!! ugh!), the room was warm, the sheets heated....The massage was amazing, half way through I thought, "wow...it is still happening!!" I actually worried the receptionist got my request wrong and i was getting an 1.5 hour massage. lol I have had massages in the past where they say an hour, but really only massage you for 45 minutes...this was a TRUe 60 minute massage. The scalp massage was an additional $20 and well worth it. She didn't bother me with chit chat during the massage (yes this has happened in the past). She spoke softly and was really respectful. At some points it was painful, the pressure was strong but i like that. It was painful because I have serious knots in my neck and really tight muscles in my thighs. But the pain is well worth it. I walked out in an absolute daze, no joke. Diana laughed at me because i was in a stupor, i felt light. My neck tonight does feel a bit sore, my thighs as well but in a good way. I actually feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders... This massage made me realize i need to get massages more often and i will def go back to Diana!! I def recommend her! read more

This is all about the Spa. I had a massage appointment for a Saturday morning. I waited in the lobby of the salon(lovely desk staff) until the Spa was ready for me. Didn't feel spa-like to me. The Spa was a thin hallway with a bouquet of flowers on a sideboard and a pitcher of tap water. My room was one of those cramped spaces where I was compelled to leave my clothing on a rolling chair. Another massage with a ponderous new age soothing wave-crashing CD. The room had less charm than my dentists office. The massuese was polite, but not particularly adept. I received gobs of lotion and not much more. I understand modesty, but was it necessary to keep me draped under a sheet and a tarp? I was told that I was charged for a Shiatsu and not a deep tissue massage. They get a half star extra for having an automated text confirmation system. Ill return for another haircut. read more

Was saying at a local hotel, for a wedding at a nearby estate, and the hotel's front desk woman raved about TRU. And they had availability when I needed my appointment. So I gave it a try. I checked in right on time, filled out some unnecessary form, then waited and waited though the salon was empty. Apparently, some glitch with their computer system?? Anyway, I was then taken back, had a lovely shampoo, and met the stylist. I told her that I had a wedding, wanted volume, and that I wanted something fun. Thought that direction was enough to go off of, but what she produced was flat and boring, with the exception of little ringlet curls, just on the front ends (WTH?). I even had to point out she forgot to style the back of my head. I told her I wasn't satisfied, and she halfheartedly tried to fix it. In hindsight, I was stupid to leave her a good tip on a bad 'do. I had no reason to write this review, especially since I live an hour away, but be forewarned about this place - it may be beautiful on the outside, but the talent isn't there to support the image. read more

If you need a fantastic hair cut or color, go to Kris. I had her do a Keratin treatment a few years ago, and loved her personality and drive, and gave her a shot to cut my hair. She's amazing, and I know 3 other women who go to her and have great cuts and color. You can go to her without any idea what to do, and she'll come up with something great. I wanted ombre highlights, and she suggested we do a partial bilage, and she gave me EXACTLY what I wanted. I get compliments all the time on it. I've worked at a celebrity salon on the Upper East Side, and can talk about hair until I'm blue in the face. I know great cuts and color when I see it, and Kris is perfect at both. You're getting a $300 NYC-level haircut for $65. read more

I have been a customer at Tru since it opened. As Lisa C. mentioned I am also sorry to say this salon especially in the past year has gone down hill very quickly. This salon has become a money making machine with little regard for the customer anymore. The front desk staff which was once so pleasant is now curt and a very bad attitude, as if they are doing you a favor instead of them appreciating your patronage! This past year FOUR times I have made an appointment for a haircut only to come to my appointment and be told "Sorry you don't have appointment" another time I was scheduled for a facial instead of a haircut! To make matters worse at no time did anyone try and rectify the situation or apologize. They just said " our next appointment is in a week, or you can try out Warren salon" It's absolutely ridiculous. I will NOT be coming here anymore. Not worth your time or money read more

I wanted to sign up for a blow dry package - there are 3 signs in the front entrance advertising the package and it is also listed in the menu of services. No where do these signs specify that your blow dry has to be under a certain time limit. When I tried to sign up for this monthly package I was surprised and disappointed that I wasn't a "candidate" for a service that is advertised in 4 different places within the main entrance. The 3 times I have gone I have been in and out within the time frame but for some reason I'm still told that's irrelevant and someone else wouldn't be able to do my hair in such a short time so they can't commit to a package for me. Um, what? I even offered to pay a little extra for the monthly package but was still declined. I get it - it's "policy"...but to loose a client asking to pay MORE money for the package advertised over maybe an extra 5 minutes a visit? Doesn't make sense and is poor business acumen. I tried speaking with a few people but got nowhere. I even started to feel I was getting "annoying" to the staff because I persisted a few times to try and make something work. It was like I became that "crazy customer" that just "didn't understand" because I wanted to sign up for a package that's advertised everywhere? It was...strange. I suppose I am crazy for trying to continue to spend my money at a place that doesn't care if I'm a client or not. I figured because this is a small business (not corporate) they would be willing to keep a local customer's monthly business. They weren't. I am bummed but it was made clear nothing can be done so I will spend my $100+ a month at a competitor's salon down the road in Somerville. read more

I made another appointment which was extraordinarily difficult to get and after I was stuck in awful traffic and spent 15 minutes beyond the norm trying to get to the salon, I got a phone call, while I was in the parking lot, telling me I was late, they would not take me and told me to come 2and a half hours later. I was late, yes, BUT staff was rude, dismissive and condescending to me on the call. I called the salon manager who left me a voicemail message saying she spoke to staff but did not offer a new appointment, a discounted service-nothing. I have been going to Tru Salon since they opened. The stylists are very competent and I was never disappointed. I have thick wavy brown hair that needs the right type of cut. The products they use are nice and always leave my hair silky and smelling nice. The salon is well lit and spacious. I am offered water or tea. There is a movie playing and the bathroom is spacious and clean. The price is on the high side at $72 a cut including tip, but I always leave feeling beautiful. Unfortunately my stylists left either for better hours or to be closer to home. I never had any other service, but the hair cuts are great. They also have points you can use toward products. Sometimes the parking lot fills up and it can be difficult to find a space so get there early. I never have had to wait more than 5 minutes for my appointment. read more

I have been coming to this salon for many years and, I am sorry to say, it has been going exponentially down in quality and up in prices. The staff is really nice and it is very accommodating. Some of them have a bit of an attitude but they are professionals so you tend to forget. However, between October and yesterday, I had many, many bad experiences. I had an haircut done by kiara that was completely wrong. I had to come in many times to correct it and eventually I had to not cut it at all for three months and hope it would grow. Then, the highlights were another nightmare. I came in two separate occasions and I showed pictures of the color and everything and when I came out I looked EXACTLY the same. I was involved in a wedding so you would not believe how humiliating it was to have 200 people look at you and tell you that you came back from the hair salon and you looked exactly how you left. I came back for corrections and there was no difference whatsoever. Now, back to the latest experience. Pressed by need, I went to get a hollywood. I live in NY city and I am used to get them all the time. First, you apply wax evenly in the direction of hair growth using, then you are supposed to grasp onto the end of strip that isn't attached to hair. Then you are supposed to hold skin taut with one hand, and remove strip in opposite direction of hair growth in one quick pull, all the way to the other side. Sometimes, technicians ask for the customer's help to pull the skin and make it less painful, if they are very experienced, they can pull the skin themselves. Ok, let me tell what happened. The girl spread hot wax all over my front and then, from my belly, without pulling any skin or without help, she removed the strip from the belly down, so in the same direction of the hair growth. Then, without pulling any skin, applying a hand or anything, she looked at me and said "all done". I was -of course- dying in pain. She didn't remove any hair from my butt and she did nos use tweezers to remove stray hair. In 20 years of waxing my private parts, I have never experienced anything so harsh, brutal, and plain rude. Needless to say, between the hair, the highlights, and the wax, now I will never come back. read more

very happy with both my facial and highlight today but disappointed in how my transaction was handled....had a "new client" 25% off coupon for a service different then my first visit (haircut) which I wanted to use today since I was getting a facial...initially forgot to give the coupon when checking out so asked if they could void the transaction and complete again....the desk girl went to check with someone and returned to tell me no I couldn't use the coupon as it already had been used....my immediate response was to stop and think but I was certain I had not used it previously....after a little investigation it was confirmed that no, I had not previously used it but now I couldn't because it should have been used on my second visit, which this was not...I was a little disappointed because no where on the coupon did it say it needed to be used on the second visit...it simple stated to come back soon for a service different than your first...when I stated this I was told it was "implied"...should I also then feel it was "implied" I was called dishonest when told I had already used the coupon?....never once was any attempt made to appease the customer or rectify the situation....BAD business dealings! read more
