This was an incredibly important and emotional day for our family, and I had been assured that she would be transported safely and assisted all the way to her hospital bed. Instead, the transport employee arrived with a bariatric wheelchair, even though my mother weighed only 130 pounds. The wheelchair was far too large. He struggled to get it up the ramp and then was unable to fit it through the doorway of our home. My mother was extremely weak and unable to walk or support herself. Because the wheelchair could not enter the house, we were left with no choice but to drag her from the front door onto the couch. We could not safely move her any farther to the hospital bed and had to ask friends to come over and help us. It was heartbreaking and deeply humiliating for my mother during what should have been a peaceful transition to hospice care. The transport employee repeatedly stated that it was not his fault because the rehabilitation facility had not included my mother's weight on the paperwork he received. However, once he picked her up, it was immediately obvious that the wheelchair was inappropriate for her size and our home. Despite recognizing this, he proceeded with the transport rather than obtaining the proper equipment or arranging an alternative solution. What should have been a compassionate, dignified homecoming became a traumatic and distressing experience for my mother and our family. I cannot adequately express how upsetting it was to watch her endure such unnecessary embarrassment and discomfort during the final stage of her life.
