Came in to taste cupcakes for our wedding next fall. We were set up with a generous plate of 4 cupcakes free of charge. One vanilla, one chocolate, one red velvet and one key lime. All were great. In all seriousness, these were the best cupcakes we've ever had. Cake was moist, rich, and flavorful and the Swiss meringue buttercream is awesome. Rich, not too sweet , and doesn't coat your mouth with that shortening film after you swallow your bite. I don't typically like bakery icing because it tends to be over sweet and and one dimensional, this on the other hand, was delicious and could easily become a dietary problem if I lived closer to the shop. Picked up breakfast here one morning on our way out for the day and we were all pleased! The pastries and bakery items looked amazing but we were there to get bagels. All the food is made fresh there's bread, bagels etc. The veggie cream cheese was the best I've had in a while. We also ordered a platter of lasagna and a spinach bread to pick up for dinner another night while we were here. The sauce and bread is all homemade to order and were PHENOMENAL! I live out of town and couldn't make the spring break trip with my girlfriends, however wanted to send them cupcakes to enjoy while they were vacationing. I called Tullio's and a lady with a Jersey accent answered, she was very helpful and informative. She was hesitant to take on my delivery due to my friends were a good distance away. However, she said she would deliver them personally when she got off of work. First of all...the worst attitude and cake ever! We bought a cake from Tullio's and followed the directions to take the cake out of the fridge for an hour and a half as written on the box. When we ate it, it was cold, hard, and it tasted like wax. So, we went back and explained this to the lady in charge. Straight up, she snapped at us and told us that we probably didn't follow the directions. So, right there, TERRIBLE customer service, which should be one of the most important things in any business. We then told her that we did in fact follow the directions and that the cake just didn't soften as it was supposed to. (Probably because it's not real buttercream.) She AGAIN gave us an attitude and said that their buttercream was better than anyone else's buttercream and told us that we must be used to the cheap, supermarket buttercream, which by the way, 100% tops Tullio's buttercream. She told us that "real" buttercream was made with egg whites, butter, and white chocolate instead of powdered sugar. Real buttercream has powdered sugar, not egg whites. Oh! And by the way, cake should not have to come with directions! Then the cake that we ordered from them was supposed to have red lettering, and that same lady wrote it in yellow! So we are not the ones who can't follow directions, she is! So, If I were you, I would go to the bakery down the street from them; it's called Sweet Coast Cakes. All we wanted was good cake and good customer service, and we got ZIP! read more

Where do I start? I was appalled at the quality of baked goods I received from the Tulio's. All I wanted was a nice cake to share with my family for my son's 18th birthday! Instead of the night ending in laughs and smiles, our cake encounter ended with shouts of disgust and everyone spitting the cake back out. It was not properly cook and tasted like anything but a cake. We took some time to examine the cake and it was clear the inner section was not thoroughly cooked. If you're looking for even a mediocre cake, you will NOT get that from Tulio's, go somewhere else. It's unfortunate when a family prefers a grocery store cake over a cake from a "bakery." read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. We bought a birthday cake for our brother who is an assistant chief of Police in Another state. There is a long running joke, based on a misspelling of assistant, and we explained this to the lady taking our order. Our cake was to say "Happy Birthday Ass. Chief Pistol Pete". She laughed and said she understood and wrote the ticket up correctly. The cake was to be marble with a chocolate mousse filling. What we got was a $50 hot mess, that tasted like a dollar store blob of pudding. There was literally no cake to be found under the layers of icing. They spelled out assistant, and said "well we thought you just didn't think it would fit", and "she could've fixed it" which was a lie. We asked them to fix it when we picked it up, and she said "I can't it will mess up the icing". We don't usually complain, but everyone was so irritated that we decided to go speak with them the following morning. When we started to tell the lady with the thick jersey shore Brooklyn accent at the front counter, she immediately got defensive. Our cake was to be marbled, but clearly by the photos I showed her, the mess we had was all chocolate. They insisted it was marble, but she thinks they must have mixed it together too much. It tasted disgusting, it looked disgusting, and we couldn't get a sorry out of them to save our lives. She said "I agree, it doesn't look good, but the flavor was still there". I can attest, the flavor was most certainly not there. She said "I don't know what you want". It was unbelievable. The man walking around baking the cakes, was irritated at the fact that we even came in to say something, mumbling and uttering the entire time. I've never been treated like this. We vacation here every year and will not be back again. It's such a shame, the photos on the website, and cupcakes/desserts in the case looked nothing like what we received. The business owners in the Outer Banks are usually so nice and helpful. Do yourself a favor, and take your business elsewhere. read more

We come to the Outer Banks around my birthday every year, and every year I score a NY cheesecake with raspberry and chocolate ganache from Tulio's for my birthday cake (don't judge). And every year it is freaking awesome. This is honestly our favorite bakery anywhere. We have sampled the donuts, muffins, cookies, biscotti, cannoli, fudge . . . and you should see what we got the next day! It is ALL good. To top it off the owners are really personable and friendly. My husband ordered cakes for our twin boys to celebrate their 7th birthday while on a family vacation in Duck. He ordered the cakes over the phone...one with R2D2 and one with sharks. The order was reviewed and the cakes were paid for, again over the phone. When we picked them up, the R2D2 cake was correct along with the Happy Birthday message however the other was completely blank with only the Happy Birthday message and NO sharks. The girl working the counter was very nice however she was clearly not the baker and could not do anything about it. I asked to speak to someone in charge and she was nice enough to call someone, presumably the owner. Instead of being met with apologies over the mix up, I was met with a very rude, unapologetic and defensive man stating that if it wasn't on the slip then we clearly didn't order sharks. When I reiterated that indeed we did, that I cannot help what was written down incorrectly, and that it was reviewed prior to payment, he again was extremely rude saying that there was nothing that he could do and was just plain being an idiot! I have never been treated so poorly by someone in the customer service industry. I understand that mistakes can be made and if he just owned it, I wouldn't be as upset. If you have a business you are responsible for your employees and their mistakes. I would NEVER recommend this business to anyone ever and would give zero stars if I could. The owner is rude and the cakes were mediocre at best...I have had better at Harris Teeter and Food Lion! Save your money and stay away!!! read more

For the past 4 years, we stop here to buy a NICE whole cheesecake or key lime pie. The Key Lime pie is the best I've ever experienced. It's as big as a large cheesecake and beautiful! Definitely a special treat for our large family on vacation. We have never experienced bad customer service as other reviewers have mentioned. I've always been waited on promptly and my cake was boxed perfectly. They do have bagels, coffee and italian ice cream. I would give this 0 stars if I could. Really upset about this place. They lost our business and while family's who come a few times every summer. My mother emailed and called them on several occasions wanting to get information about cupcakes, candy and pies for my wedding this fall and they wouldn't giver her the time of day. Today they said that have been "to busy" to respond to emails...well maybe they should take that communication off the website then. Apparently they are too busy to return phone calls after a few weeks now also. Where do I begin? This place is a disaster. Everything about the cake I bought is garbage except for the whipped cream. We purchased the cannoli cake and it was shockingly bad. First of all, they use almond extract in the cake. I have never in my life eaten a cannoli or a cannoli cake with almond extract in it. Cinnamon oil yes. Almond extract no. This gave the cake a very odd taste. Additionally the cake itself is as gummy as any cake I have ever had. It reminds me of the recipes used to make cake pops. We sliced the cake and served it and no one ate it. One bite was enough for everyone. My sister in law called to complain about the cake and we were told to call back on Wednesday. We complied and were told by the female owner that we were looking to get the cake for free. Very insulting. We aren't looking to get a cake for free. The entire thing is right here. It's not like we ate it and are now complaining. It's all here. She said she felt insulted about what we were saying about the cake. That's no way for an owner to act. The male owner gets on the phone and it's more of the same and the male owner hung up on us. I called back and they threatened to call the police!!!! What a horrible experience. If you are from the North East (owner claims to be from NY, no way would this cake fly anywhere in NY) I would not recommend this place. 50 plus bucks for a cake that went right in the trash. read more

Out of four drinks, they messed up three... one of which was water. Make sure whoever takes your order, completes your order, and charges you. Otherwise, they will charge you twice. The manager hushed the customer to berate employee for a two minute rant on how they messed up.
