This place felt like your southern grandmothers dining room, it was a welcomed break from the hustle and bustle of downtown Denver today. The happy hour menu was full of great options, including meatloaf that I may just have to go back tomorrow and try. Today I went for the classic chicken and waffles with a side of mac & cheese. Very good! We went for lunch and split the Sriracha honey chicken and waffles, it was delicious and super filling! The quality of the chicken breast was a little lacking, but the breading was nice and crispy, the waffle was pretty perfect, and the sauce was amazing. This is one of my favorite places and I went to a location in the Milwaukee area and the group I was with loved it too. My recent visit to the downtown Denver location proved that there is great consistency in locations and that it will be a go to as long as they keep this up! Found this place online for lunch when I was looking for good shrimp and grits. Unfortunately the grits here contain goat cheese and they are unable to make any more grits outside of the ones they have made for the day. We ordered two orders of the sweet potato pancake with scrambled eggs and bacon. One order was significantly smaller than the other. The pancakes were really thin. The food took quite a while to arrive, and when it finally did, the eggs were cold and extremely dry. The pancake had a slight burnt taste and wasn't very enjoyable. The butter and nuts were good, but that was about it. The server thought we would get egg and a meat but it was a mistake she admitted which was okay. The service was just slow. The restaurant itself was just okay, one side of the booth we sat at had oily seats. Overall, the place and the food felt like they were geared more toward tourists than regular diners. read more

So, I'm updating my review. And happily to say that the service improved greatly. On my day to fly back to MD, my guy and I decided to come back. We had amazing service from Lanker. I skipped on the waffles as I really wanted to chow down on chicken. Their menus are different at lunchtime, so it's not that extensive as during the weekend. Our waiter offered us biscuits, which I thought were complimentary but wasn't. But they were good! I got fried chicken and it was good! My guy got shrimp n grits. He was so kind enough to share. Now it was good , I really wanted to swap meals because it was good. I managed to get a lion portion. Our meals were good and I had the itis and needed a nap. Service and food were much better. It's a delicious and casual southern kitchen! Not like classic true sour there, it's modernized version. Parker was our waiter and he was very friendly, even though we walked in 45 minutes before closing. At that time, there were just a handful of tables seated. Turmeric Ginger Tonic beverage was sold out, and it's very popular so consider it if you come at an earlier time! I had to try their famous 20-year old banana pudding recipe and wow, I was impressed. If you're a fan of the dessert, it's a must-try. On a side note, the water tasted great haha, not your average tap water. Sweet with no bitter after taste. I also didn't mind the TV playing Friends. I don't have much to say about the place but I wouldn't necessarily recommend the chicken and waffles because the portion was small and the Mac and cheese didn't do anything for the meal. When I ordered the cold brew, the waiter asked if I wanted sweetener and/or cream. I ended up getting honey syrup and oat milk. It was cool that I got to pick different sweeteners but not cool that I had to pay $1 for 2 oz of oat milk. I checked in on Yelp and they did honor a 10% discount to my bill. I dined here last night with my friend. It was her birthday so this was an ideal venue for a nice birthday dinner. My friend immediately liked the ambiance of the restaurant. She also liked the "Butter My Butt and Call Me a Biscuit" sign. I liked that too! I also like that they have a small gift shop area to purchase glassware and other Tupelo Honey items. We sat near the front entrance with nice views of the downtown in the background. I like the location of the restaurant. However, it's not easily accessible. Street parking or public parking garage only. I had to park a ways down from the restaurant and it was only about 4:30 PM. Our waitress was polite but not personable. Service was slow in the beginning. My suggestion to management is to pick up the pace and don't let the patrons wait too long to put orders in. We waited a long time to put our appetizer order in and longer to put orders in for our entrees. For appetizers, we ordered the Sausage & Beer Gumbo along with Biscuits with Butter and Jam. Both are DELISH!! We actually ended up ordering TWO orders of the Biscuits with Butter and Jam. It was that good! For my entree I ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken with Mac & Cheese Waffles along with a side of Brussel Sprouts. I very much enjoyed this meal. I would probably order a different side next time (additional time). They have lovely sides! My friend ordered the Bistro Steak with Broccoli and Potatoes. She very much enjoyed her meal! I sampled a bite of the steak and felt that it we as really good. Not overcooked and seasoned well. I passed on dessert. They do have some nice desert options. My only suggestion is to go here on an empty stomach and eat well. They have a lot of great menu options. My friend was so impressed that she would like to come back here again. ME TOO! The quinoa salad broccolini was a little overdone. My water wasn't refilled. The biscuit was solid and a little salty. Nothing was bad, I think I've had better in all categories from food to service. (Although I wasn't thrilled about the extra charge for ranch when the menu said "Brussels and ranch", it was still good). Happy hour starts at 3pm, so the sangria and fries green tomatoes were must haves. You can tell it was brined, to the point of being a little too salty, but the honey dusting mellowed it out a bit. It came with two drumsticks and one thigh. Everything was perfectly cooked and the meat was nice and juicy. The Mac and cheese was good as well, nice and cheesy with some breadcrumbs on top. Sunday was my first time back in a couple years, and my memory is likely failing me (because I don't remember that first meal, honestly) but I feel like they've stepped things up. I would come just for a whole bowl of those. The Benedict was also great and flavorful. The biscuits are good though maybe not my favorite of the ones I've tried over time. We had the biscuits for a cause to start. They were crumbly and light and served with a whipped butter and blueberry compote of sorts. So darn yummy. It was hard to be judicious and not overeat waiting for our mains. Two of us ordered the shrimp and grits and the other had the breakfast platter. The shrimp and grits were a great portion, not too large or small considering how rich it is. My shrimp was perfectly cooked and the creole sauce was rich and deep.
