Glad we followed the recommendations of an elderly couple at the trendy Crooked Billet, for a local pub with pool table and beer garden.
This is a normal old man's pub, carpets on the floor, wooden bar, football on several screens. By no means fancy or gastro, it was clean and well maintained, including the toilets.
The pool table had plenty of space around it, the beer garden had plenty of seating, though don't go expecting a rose garden.
Most of the old folk stuck to the front of the pub, and we settled around the pool table with local kids in the early 20s. An amazing mix of Jewish, Polish, Brazilian, Japanese. Spent six hours laughing, playing, smoking with a host of patrons. Shared a stranger's pizza because he could see I was hungry.
They don't do food, but seem happy enough for you to bring something in, it is best and polite to ask first. The staff were most helpful and accommodating.
At £11 for a round of two pints and a gin & tonic, and the genuine warmness of the punters, I will definitely return. read more
