I should really know better. Pizarra Café is just in front of the Cathedral, which spells "tourist…read moretrap". But alas, I needed a break while the art museum was closed for the afternoon and also needed a reprieve from the sun, which was relentless that day. Originally, I just wanted a sparkling water to re-hydrate. As it turns out, I had the most depressing lunch in all of Asturias, which I didn't even think was possible, given the pride that people have for gastronomy and ensuring that everyone eats well - you don't finish your plate and the restaurant owner panics, thinking something was wrong.
At Pizarra Cafe, I received the saddest ensalada mixta in the history of the world [1]. The contents included: half a shredded asparagus, the absence of onion (which was advertised in the menu description), four shaved slivers of tomato, and an additional 1.30 euro surcharge for what was the most stale, unappetizing bread in all of Spain. Of course, my post-lunch espresso was also slightly more expensive than the "market rate" for coffee in the rest of Oviedo. The following day, I went to a wine bar and had an excellent lunch to more than make up for this 8 euro travesty.
Go figure that a Tripadvisor thread would consider the aesthetics of the waitstaff more important than the food served: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187452-i1511-k2053261-Vegetarian_Restaurant_in_Oviedo-Oviedo_Asturias.html. (NB: I didn't even have a cute waiter/ Iker Casillas [1] look-alike! Hmmph.)
[1] Iker Casillas is the Adonis of Spanish soccer. I dare you to do a Google Image Search and tell me I'm wrong!
