The acoustics were great, no loud echoes from the cast or the patrons watching the play. I'm curious as to how the sound quality will be when there is a live act performing music. Ben Mathis performed tonight and the sound level and quality were acceptable. There weren't echoes or serious vibrations. The skylights need to be cleaned and there is paint peeling. There are clean and comfortable theater seats. The air system works pretty good (borderline nippy when it comes on). All in all, a very nice venue for more intimate performances.

The church was built in 1871 and from 1906-1976 served as Fillmore Street Presbyterian Church. The building was constructed with load-bearing brick walls, and windows with lancet arches. The main steeple is attached to the front facade of the building. The chapel is now host to weddings and other special events. It is surrounded by hydrangeas with blooms that change colors as they age. The arched windows reflect back to the viewer. This is perhaps the most photographed building in Corinth. I'm known to have shot it several times.

There aren't a lot of displays, as it is a battlefield that isn't as heavily visited as some of the others. What is there is impressive. They do a nice job of interpreting the battle. The artillery and gun ports are equally impressive. Which visitor to a battlefield doesn't enjoy seeing cannons? The bronze castings of Civil War era gear, weapons and uniforms in the grass and in the concrete on the walking path was a nice touch. They definitely add to the "feel" of the place The staff member I met was polite, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the siege and the later battle. There weren't a lot of people there, and I think he was the only person working, but he did his job very well. If you're passing through the area, be sure to stop. It's a bit out of the way, but it's very easy to get to. If you're even the slightest bit interested in Civil War history, you need to add this to the list of battlefields that you want to visit. It can easily be tied into a visit if the Shiloh Battlefield, which is exactly what I did.

Halleck Beauregard told his superiors: "If defeated here we will lose the Mississippi Valley and probably our cause . . . and our independence." The main reason for Corinth's military importance is 2 major railroads, the Memphis & Charleston Railroad (running east/west) and the Mobile & Ohio Railroad (north/south) crossed here. By 1855, a small town, originally called Cross City, changed its name to Corinth, after the crossroads city of ancient Greece. During the Civil War, the town would become the site of 2 significant engagements: 1. A siege of the town in spring 1862 2. A bloody conflict that same fall The Battle of Shiloh on April 6-7, 1862 was faught in an effort to defend Corinth over possession of the city's railroads. The Confederates lost this battle and had to retreat to Corinth, bringing many of their wounded with them causing the town to become a vast hospital. Union forces laid siege to the town in May 1862. On October 3-4, 1862, Confederates advanced and attacked the Union Army. After 2 days of fire, Confederate General Van Dorn was forced to retreat. By January 1864, the strategic situation had changed so much that Corinth was no longer needed by the Union, so the Federal army abandoned the town.

Sometimes the amount of infant deaths that occurred over 100 years ago is overwhelming. The Henry Cemetery was founded in 1879 by the Milton B. Henry family on land sold by the Chickasaws to the U.S. government in 1832. Henry purchased 160 acres in 1856. Robert Henry Young, and infant grandson of M.B. Henry, was the first person buried here. One famous interred is Ezekiel Samuel Candler, Jr, born January 18, 1862 died December 18, 1944, a US Congressman. Elected to represent Mississippi's 1st District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1901 to 1921. He also served as a Presidential Elector from Mississippi in1888, and Mayor of Corinth, Mississippi, 1933 to 1937. There are currently two plots for sale. A segment of U.S. Highway 72 from one end of the Glen city limits to the other was named the…read moreWilliam "Seth" Ricketts Memorial Highway. A Glen native, Seth Ricketts was killed in Afghanistan on Feb. 27, 2010. The state Department of Transportation will maintain the special signs. The segment isn't on a scenic route of any sort. Anyone driving that piece of highway knows it is just a peaceful and smooth ride with no bumps or disturbances. The scenery consists of sporadic residents and tall trees. That peaceful strip of highway is fitting though, considering Glen is so small and peaceful. Seth did 'go back home after all'. Staff Sgt. William S. Ricketts of Corinth, Mississippi is a 2000 graduate of Alcorn Central High School where he was a member of the school band. He enlisted in the United States Army in the fall of September of 2001, just a day after the events of 9/11. He already served two tours in Iraq and was currently serving his third tour in Afghanistan. His Awards and Decorations included, the Army Commendation Medal with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, The National Defense Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two Campaign Stars, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal with three Campaign Stars, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the NATO Medal, and the Parachutist Badge with Combat Star. He died at age 27 in Bala Murghab, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire.
