The signs were easy to follow and navigation throughout the station was pretty easy. All in all, this was a good train station that was pretty easy to navigate. Picture a large metro station and a mall…read more I took the CAT from the airport to here. Then easily caught the U4 to my hotel. A very clean and busy station. Every U, S and CAT are well marked. The ticket kiosks were easy to find and use. They are available in several languages. There is also a OBB office here. I stopped back in a few days later to purchase a day trip to Bratislava and a round trip to Budapest. I found it easier to talk with a representative in person. Glad I did, as he gave me better station options and a reserved seat. I wish the States had a great rail system.

I booked the WESTbahn train from Vienna to Salzburg instead of OBB due to it being a better value…read morethat got us there in the same amount of time. The tradeoff was lugging our bags to Westbahnhof, further away compared to Wien Hauptbanhof but the station was well connected to the Metro (U3) so it was an easy transit Signs inside Westbanhof were well placed and station simple to navigate to find our train and track. On the train we found space for our luggage (medium size) on the racks since we boarded as soon as the doors opened and I booked our seat next to it. Lighter backspaces or small carryons could be placed on the shelf above the seats. Our seats were in the standard class with decent space and comfort. It worked for the 2.5 hour train ride. First class added nicer seats and free food deliveries to your seat. Timely station announcements and signs at each end of the carriages provided good status on our trip Bathrooms on the train were functional in design and clean. Always interesting to use while the train was in motion. Our carriage was next to the Westcafe car which had seating and self service vending machines for food and drink. Surprisingly all the seats were filled when we boarded. If you want to save money on your travel to Salzburg then this is your train.

In December 2012, on OBB, the per person fare is approximately 50 Euro whereas it is 25 Euro per person on Westbahn (but note, for some reason our credit card did not work so we paid cash like everyone else). Plus, on the WB, you get a leather seat, an in-seat electrical outlet, and free wifi that was pretty speedy. The trains leave Salzburg every hour or two. The 2.5 hour trip will be up before you know it. Just get on board and buy your ticket from the attendant once you are underway. If headed from Salzburg to Vienna, pick up an assortment of inexpensive groceries from the SPAR market in the train station to have a picnic lunch on board. NOTE: OBB will not tell you about this line of train service. There will be little to no signage about WB in the train station.... that is because WB is new competition for OBB... Check with your hotel or the WB's website for information.

I am always a little unsure of how to rate subway stations. Especially those that are like this…read moresmall, and extremely simple. While I do not have to take the U-Bahn to get to school, since this station is closest to my flat, if I need to get almost anywhere else not in immediate walking distance, this is the station I go to. Like I said earlier, the station is very simple as is the architecture, but I like that there are those windows to let some daylight into the station. There are two entrances, on on the far side of the exhibition center, and another near the Prater amusement park garage. Right across the cross walk from Motel One. Platform is the kind where trains arrive on both sides, so not one where you can accidentally end up on the wrong side, and take a train in the wrong direction. Elevators on both sides, but from what I have seen, the elevator on the Prater side has a tendency to get stuck. One time the thing broke while I was walking down the stairs next to it. The good news, however, is that in both cases, when I returned in a few hours, there was already a technician working on it. Escalator only on the Messe side. There is a station supervisors office in the station, but in the times I have been to that side of the station, the office was closed. Station is clean! it is not shiny, and I would not eat off the ground, but relative to some other train stations I have seen around the world, this one is pretty neat.
