Both were really good but the spicy ramen noodle was a little better. The servers were very friendly, had great recommendations, and knew the menu very well. Excellent food and drink in a beautiful setting. We went for an early light dinner and were offered a seat at the bar, which was fine with us. After watching the bartender firing up some smoked old fashioned cocktails, we each ordered one, along with the pork ribs and collards greens to share. Everything was delicious. The collards eat more like a meal than a side of veggies, as they're chock full of smoked pork, bacon and crispy fried onions. Just amazing. Came here for dinner with a 5:30pm reservation. Love the ambiance of this place from the moment we walked in. My husband and I had the Ukiah tasting menu and every dish was delicious. The wagyu beef skewers were my favorite of the savory dishes but the dessert was the real showstopper for me. It was a charcoal puff pastry with cream inside and a small scoop of matcha ice cream. I've never had anything like this before. Out of this world. I gave only 4 stars because we didn't leave until 7:45pm. That's over two hours for dinner. The space between courses was inconsistent and quite long at times. There was a glitch with the computer system so 3 different times someone brought us a duplicate of a dish we already had instead of our next course. Also the fire alarm went off not long after our arrival, and while the manager took care of the noise from the alarm within a few minutes, the fire department did show up and do a walk through. It was just kind of a circus operationally speaking but the food was delicious and I would come again on another visit to town as long as I wasn't on any type of time schedule. read more

My husband and I visited Asheville for our anniversary. We decided to give Ukiah a go for dinner. Like many other reviewers have said, we too close the chef's table. I highly recommend it if you are an adventurous eater. My husband and I both enjoyed the variety of dishes. I really enjoyed the tempura mushroom, salad, and the peppers. My least favorite dish was the duck hot pot. I didn't care for the broth, and the dumplings were tiny. The last dish was coconut cake. It was ok, but I really enjoyed the ice cream on the side. This might have been the worst experience I've had at a restaurant. Food was absolutely terrible and the service was just as bad. We could barely finish any of the dishes next to the salmon sticky rice and coconut cake. Never get the tasting menu or the pork shoulder. Nobody asked why we weren't finishing most of the dishes either. Which made it that much worse. After spending close to 300 dollars for my wife's birthday I have to say I'm genuinely upset with this dining experience. read more

I've been wanting to go here since they opened and I finally had the free time and a sitter. The place was worth the wait! Service was impeccable and the food was wonderful! The server was prompt and nice and helpful when needed. The drinks were kept full and the plates came out at a well times pace. I ordered the snowdrop which is a creamy sake that has a smooth and sweet profile. While they do have some bigger dishes I picked to do the tapas style order. We Started with the shishito peppers, they had a nice char but the sauce is what made them stand out. The karaage chicken was fantastic fried chicken, super crispy with two delicious dipping sauces. My partners favorite was the shrimp cocktail, definitely a classic done well here. My favorite was tie between the asparagus with miso and bacon and the crispy ribs. For the first time I didn't take pics of the food but everything was awesome. We had a large party so we had a tasting menu. Instead of oysters we had rock shrimp and carrots instead of zucchini. The table raved about all of the food. People loved the sweet potatoes so much that they took them home (6 hour drive) the next day! The cocktails and wine were fabulous too (especially the mezcal yuzu one). We had the coconut cake with coconut ice cream and it was a big hit. The staff was wonderful and they were accommodating to our group and dietary restrictions (needed a few nondairy options). as authentic as its name let me preface this by saying a good effort is put into making the food, it is just that the result doesn't resemble what I know as japanese food. we went for 3 small plates and a ramen bowl. we tried the gyoza which was a set of 4 with a flour crust but absolutely soaked in vinegar with little soy sauce...way too sour. broccolini was the same deal except with bacon bits. best small plate we got was the grilled chicken thigh skewers which was relatively better because it didn't come in a pool of vinegar, but instead came with little flavor/seasoning, not to mention heavily charred (one piece of scallion was basically all carbon). the tonkatsu ramen bowl was not anything special either...the pork was delicious but the broth was very thin (tasted like it was made quickly) and the noodles tasted like top ramen? I am sure there are peeps that would enjoy this food, but if you care about authenticity, this is not the place for you read more

Went here to celebrate our anniversary while traveling through Asheville. The place is super cute with modern decor. We got seated quickly in a nice big booth and were served water quickly. Pros: Our server (septum piercing and 2 toned hair) was AWESOME! She gave amazing recs and was super attentive. Even got us some Prosecco for our anniversary The rock shrimp and baby back ribs are AMAZING! Like I could eat both daily. Just scrumptious. And omg the Green Machine drink Sooooo bomb! I couldn't stop drinking them. My husband loved each whiskey drink he got. Great selection of Japanese whiskeys. Cons: Tonkotsu was just ok, and it made me very sad The broth was good but the noodles didn't marinate in the broth long enough so they weren't that good. Very good dinner at ukiah tonight! It was pretty busy since it's Saturday night but we were able to sit at the large bar right away without reservations. Everything was really good but my favorites were the miso soup and the bok choy that had a delicious charred flavor! The service was good overall but one of the dishes we ordered in the beginning didn't come till the end of the meal which was a little odd but not the end of the world. My guests loved the mushroom, although it was a bit overly breaded for my taste. The shishito peppers were good, but the Hamachi was the star. We loved the pork bao buns, but the firecracker style shrimp was slightly fishy. The seabass and unagi serving sizes were very small... Amazing find. This cute urban Japanese Americans FUSIAN restaurant is a above and beyond what I expected. The ambiance was absolutely amazing. The outdoor patio was comfortable and modern rustic twist. The noise levels were moderate. Staff were super friendly and attentive. More importantly the food and drinks were amazing. We ordered crispy squid. It was robust and full of flavors. It was little too breaded and crispy for me. But my friend devoured this dish. We then proceeded to order the sliced hamachi which was drizzled with soy base sauce and mixed with herbs, mint leaves and jalapeños. Delicious with multiple layers of flavors. We also ordered the crispy pork Bao. This was my favorite based on the execution and the flavors of this pork in a bun. The smoked chilli aioli sauce definitely made this sandwich even better. We then ordered pork belly on a stick with fuji apple glaze, apple chow chow + scallions. It was cooked just right with an amazing BBQ flavor. Super delicious and full of amazing robust flavors. Perfectly cooked and perfectly flavored but a touch on the salty side for me (my partner liked it though) the chimichurri sauce balanced it out perfectly and it was fantastic. Must get this. Baby back ribs- I'll admit I wasn't hopeful but the waiter recommended it. Very well executed. Tender ribs with the complexity of Asian/Japanese flavors in the sauce. Color me impressed Ok: Sweet potato - I think this is a situation of if you don't like the main ingredient you won't like it. I eat sweet potatoes when I want to be healthy and it was a good sweet potato with some interesting toppings but honestly after all the meat I wish I had tried the corn or broccoli Service- it was... ok. A little inattentive when we wanted to order then at the end of the meal it felt like we were being rushed out when there were plenty of other customers still around. Poor service and overall communication amongst their staff members. I ordered oysters and there was a parasitic crab in one of them, which is a common occurrence but I sent it back. I told the managing team and they came back saying "oh you turned away a good luck charm" as if he expected me to eat the crab rather than apologize they didn't do quality control. Yum-o Don't you love it when you are traipsing through a city on vacay and smell something wonderful while wandering around and then you google, then YELP it, and discover that you HAVE to cancel your previous reservation at your bland Americana farm to table place and then go onto Open Table, Resy trying to find a same day reservation and can't so you call the place and beg for a seat even late that night, outside, when it might be cold and rainy?? (I know that this is NOT JUST ME!) Food (5/5): Gorgeously presented and so so good. We had the edamame to start (nicely salted) and settled in with Sapporo (on tap!) and Fuchs, Grun-V (amazing). We also tried the vegetable gyoza, which was covered in a crispy egg white topping. The gyoza itself was a bit flat (could have used a bit more junk in there...) but the taste was good though a bit overpriced at $10. Crispy Pork bao buns - the buns were perfect. White, fluffy and were served with spicy aioli. The pork belly was thick and deep fried, covered in a panko like crust. I wasn't sure I would like it, but I LOVED it. It balanced together perfectly, especially with that hint of pickle in there. Vegetable ramen - The star of the show was this amazing Ramen. Hubby had never had "non-Top Ramen" ramen before and I think that he's hooked! The rich umami flavors really melded together so well in the vegetable broth and nice rich noodles. I can't say enough about this magical dish. If you don't get it, you can only blame yourself. I am already plotting my next bowl.... Service (5/5): Our server was kind and attentive. Atmosphere (4/5): This was a rustic modern building and a large center bar, and a huge outside patio. It looked like there was a huge fireplace for winter. The neighbor seemed "up and coming" so it's good to have new restaurants like this to attract business. We were fortunate to be able to get a one of two reservations left (Friday night during prime leaf season--don't trust Open Table) after calling. I was charged $28.00 for a buffalo trace old fashioned. I have never paid so much for a cocktail, if I was at a hotel bar, I could understand. Spoke with the bartender about why the drink was $28.00 he could not account for the reason, it is a shame these restaurants nickel and dime customers, adding service fee etc. I have never left a restaurant without leaving a tip, I hate to do that, If you are going to charge $28.00 for an old fashioned and 3 percent service fee, you can take the tip from that.
