The Market Cross at the top of Market St. is the town's war memorial. It has the list of names written on each of it's faces in relief on metal plaques topped by another saying In memory of those Ulverstonians who gave their lives in the wars ... followed by the dates in Roman Numerals. In addition to the traditional wreaths of poppies at Rememberance Sunday, families often leave wreaths or posies on significant dates. These are treated with respect by the community, even these days!
This might be a relevant point to mention the citations which the town received in 1946 from King George VI
I wish to mark by this personal message. my appreciation of the service you have rendered to your Country in 1939 -
In the early days of the war you opened your door to strangers who were in need of shelter, and offered to share your home with them_
I know that to this unselfish task you have sacrificed much of your own comfort, and that it could not have been achieved without the loyal co-operation of all your household_
By your sympathy you have earned the gratitude of those to whom you have shown hospitality, and by your readiness to served you have helped the State in a work of great value_
