Stopped in for lunch on a Friday and was hoping for better results. The staff was very helpful and attentive. The decor was fresh and clean and the ambiance was fresh. I ordered the 2 roll lunch special and was hoping for some good tuna rolls. The miso soup and ginger dressing on the salad was well above average. Then the rolls came. The spicy tuna roll had so many flakes on it I could barely find the roll but the tuna has a good heat to it. The tuna crunch roll was good but the tuna didn't taste the freshest. Maybe it was just the piece I got but as someone who's main protein is tuna, this was a bummer. Went back for dinner and the smell was still there but we think it is the kitchen and the sushi bar. Floor wasn't sticky. Thank goodness. We each got a roll. Salmon Tempura which tasted good but we thought it would be crunchier. Double Dragon roll that was very good. As usual. Trinity roll was the highlight. Bright and fresh flavor with a hint of lemon. The bento came with ginger salad, miso soup, fried gyoza, California roll, and white rice--everything you want in a well-rounded lunch, and the portion size was huge. The gyoza was decent and the sauce should have been on the side instead of them sitting in the sauce, but it did the job, though it didn't stand out as much as the salad. The miso soup was good as well. California roll was average. My wife ordered the two-roll lunch combo with crunchy tuna and spicy salmon. I tried both and really enjoyed them. I am back to update my review of the Umami. I had reached out privately to the restaurant and then followed up with my Yelp review. The owner, Chris C, reached out to me multiple times to make up for my bad experience. I want to make sure that folks that try out Umami know that the owner is conscientious about making sure that you have a great experience at the restaurant. I travel a lot for work and I don't often check my personal email, but I did find out that he eventually gave me a full refund for my meal. It wasn't expected and it did definitely go a long way in making me feel better about the customer service. I think that on any given night any given, RestAurant can have a bad night or have a slip up. Everyone there was having a great time and enjoying their food. I say give them a chance. The "crunchy " rolls really took it too far and were EXTREMELY deep fried. Update: We've visited between locations since the opening of the new beachside location. Usually we enjoy our visits greatly, but we seemed to notice a change in quality during this visit to Umami beachside. We ordered several pieces of Sashimi, Uni, the Kalbi Appetizer, and Pan-Fried Gyoza. In short, it seemed as though the food was less flavorful than usual and the cuts of Sashimi were done somewhat carelessly (not even thickness throughout, a veil of sinew(?) on the salmon that made it more difficult to chew. The Uni, per my husband, "didn't feel fresh". The ambiance for a Friday early evening was somewhat busy, but no wait. Our server Marie was attentive and friendly. She checked in on us often and offered some witty conversation. This location might be better suited for the tourists, but for locals looking for Quality sushi maybe we should consider other options. read more

We are so happy to have Umami beachside! Loved the west Mel location but always a hike, so when this one opened, we were stoked! The space is much brighter than the west Mel location, which is a plus (I always had trouble seeing in the other location, it's so dark!). The tables are well spaced, but If you don't have perfect posture, don't ask to sit in the booth/bench side (pretty uncomfy/stiff). The food is just as great as west Mel, we love the spicy tuna crispy rice so much and always order it. Other faves include the Buri Buri good roll, the new englander, the trinity and the Boba fett. Their California rolls are different than the standard - just a note if that's something you (or your little ones) are fans of. If you like amaebi (sweet shrimp with the fried head) they have it, you just have to ask for the head . For hot foods, the yakisoba is good as are the Gyoza. Service is hit or miss depending on when you go/who is working, but they are still so new, I'm sure they're still figuring it out. They also offer takeout, which we utilize more often (and helps avoid having to sit in the booth benches!) Note that they are closed on Sunday, so if you want umami then you'll have to go over the bridge to the original location. See you there! read more

Not sure what happened today but our takeout order with sushi sashimi dinner and chirashi was not very good. A lot of the fish didn't taste fresh and has a weird smelly taste to it. Went there for dinner last week. We were told they had problems with their AC. Didnt tell us their sushi was also affected by AC problem. The sushi tasted fishy and as if it sat in room temperature for a while before serving. For the price, this was subpar quality sushi.
