Since Sushi Alive has relocated to West Chase I was worried about not being able to find a sushi spot close to home, but I am happy Umami Sushi has decided to open in this plaza. I dined here last here last night around 8pm and I was immediately impressed with the cleanliness, decor and ambiance of the restaurant. It wasn't busy at all so the noise level was very low. We were seated immediately and someone came to take our drink and food order right away. We ordered about 5 or 6 rolls to split and they were all very good, but I was left with a feeling of there's something missing.... like an ingredient of some sort was missing from each roll. Overall, it was a good experience between the service and food and I will be back to eat here in the future. Yum! Got takeout the other night and got non sushi items. Let me say it was excellent. The smell when opening the noodles reminded me of one of my fav places in Japan and tasted great. Music is much too loud for eating. Around lunch, service is really slow. Green tea was like water. Miso soup like water. No brewed iced tea or any other tea. This new Japanese restaurant is one of the best, if not the best I've been to since living in Vancouver BC. Six were in our group on a Friday night, no reservation was made, and it should have been, but we were accommodated within 20 minutes. My husband and I shared a "box dinner", it was so good. Wow! I am stunned by the artistry and sophisticated cuisine that was presented in each and every dish at Umami Sushi. This place is absolute sushi GOLD. And in Lutz, of all places!! I was blown away by the incredible craftsmanship, variety, and freshness of each and every roll that my family had here. Go for the Chef's Signature Rolls, they're between $10-$13, and, unlike many overpriced sushi places, it's every bit worth it. In fact, it's practically a bargain. Every roll is loaded (I mean seriously chock full!) with amazing ingredients; flavor combinations that show a level of culinary understanding and creativity that's severely lacking in most sushi these days. We started by sharing the Tuna Tataki appetizer, a lightly seared Tuna, presented beautifully over fried leeks and shallots. While the dish was on the small side, I was struck by how tangibly fresh the tuna was. If you've ever had truly fresh fish, you know what I mean. A good start, but then came the rolls. Sweet mother of rolls. Now, I have a sensitivity to avocados, so I substituted cucumber in both rolls that I got, and I'm telling you, I didn't miss it one bit. The first one: the Amazing Tuna Roll (filled with not one, but THREE different styles of tuna--white tuna tempura & spicy tuna inside, then wrapped with a delicate peppered tuna over the rice, and topped with mango dressing & eel sauce, sprinkled with masago.) Amazing doesn't begin to describe it. And the Angry Lobster Roll was out of this world--a shrimp tempura and mango stuffed roll, topped with "lobster salad", oven-grilled and drizzled with wasabi mayo, spicy mayo, AND eel sauce). Each sauce was beautifully complimentary; none were excessive and each brought subtle yet powerful flavors. The lobster salad that was baked on the outside of the roll formed a delicious, crab cake-esque crust over the top of each individual piece. And the fresh mango brought a little burst of fruitiness to the richness of the rest of the roll. Truly worth savoring every bite. I also had the chance to taste a single, glorious piece of the Green Peace Roll, which had baked blue crab, shrimp tempura, cream cheese, and mango all wrapped in soybean paper and eel glaze. If any sushi is capable of being melt-in-your-mouth good, it's this one. I cannot praise them enough. Finally a worthy--nay, outstanding--sushi restaurant has graced this little plaza. I am so disappointed with my family's order. We ordered several types of sushi, some chicken plates and a side of fried rice. I have a severe allergy to avocado and requested no avocado on my sushi. I brought the food home, opened it up and guess what... it came with avocado. I called the restaurant to ask for a refund and they argued with me saying that they didn't include avocado in the sushi when it's clearly sitting right there in the rolls. Plus they claimed that they couldn't do a refund for an online order. They remade the sushi rolls, but only the ones that had avocado in them. I guess I wasn't clear enough when I said that I had a severe allergy and didn't want to end up in the emergency room and charge them for the bill due to their food. On top of that all of the other dishes were cold, not warm like you would expect from take out, cold! In the end the only one who was happy was my daughter with her fried rice which literally was nothing more than fried rice. To be fair I did order it that way. read more

First I would like to say when my family and I walked in we realized what a nice establishment but how very busy it was. The restaurant was filled to the brim and so many customers were in and out for their take out so the wait was a little long. However, in the end the wait was worth it. The hostess was kind and accommodating. It did not take long for the waiter to reach our table. He was kind with a wonderful personality. Our orders did not take long either. There were no complaints with our food and service. Hot foods came out hot and delicious. The sushi was spectacular and overall the whole ambience was soothing especially for such a busy day we had. Not to mention we ordered dessert and happened to mention it was my youngest daughters birthday and they changed the music in the restaurant played happy birthday and added a candle to her dessert and it just made the whole experience that much more special. I will recommend this restaurant to all my friends and family in Tampa and anyone who visits Tampa. Also, my family and I will definitely be coming back when we are in town. This has become my absolute favorite place for Sushi. Beautiful presentation, fast service, clean and cozy and most importantly, super fresh tasting sushi and sashimi. The spicy miso soup is my favorite with chunks of seafood and just the right amount of heat. They adjusted my order twice on the platform from the restaurant, causing multiple pending charges on my acct. let alone I did not receive my side sauce, which actually cost almost $2 by itself. When I called the restaurant they advised i need to go back to the ordering platform for a refund, i didn't even ask for a refund i one the sauce i wanted know why i was charged multiple times. Again referred to the ordering platform. Girl on the phone was nice but i mean come on? Maybe call the customer before adjusting an order before assuming what the customer "might have wanted". I came here once and had a great experience. Today I picked up a to go and when I walked in 3 of the cooks (front area) had their mask lowered not covering thier mouths(under the chin). I was shocked! In plain sight not wearing their mask and no one saying anything. I asked the young lady helping me with the to go if it was not mandated anymore. She said yes it was and that they wear it I asked her to look I showed her that they were not wearing their masks and then pointed out to her that she wasn't even wearing a mask. She then adjusted her mask and said well I don't know and handed me my food. Sushi was not good. The rice itself was very bland. Sushi rice should be slightly sweet but their sushi tasted like water. The salmon roll was grinded up salmon which is NOT sushi grade. This sushi place is amazing. Me and my niece try this resturant out last night and we were both very pleased. First I love inside if the restaurant. To me if felt like we were in a dark dungeon. We shared the chicken fried rice which is the best friend rice I ever had. It came with a side if yum yum sauce. Soooooo yum. Most fried rice I've tried is bland but this place defiently surprised us when it came to this fried rice. So flavorful. I tried the Tiger Roll and my niece had the Crunchy Crunch Roll. Both were really tummy. But the tiger roll was the best. I can't explain how it taste, just had great texture and flavor. The crunchy stuff they put on top really help bring the flavors together. I placed a to go order for my brother, he had the Passion roll and the Coconut crunch roll. He said it was the best sushi he's had. Us 3 are real sushi eaters so we know a thing or two about sushi.
