I come here specifically for their tamales de pollo. The BEST tamales I've ever had in my life. They wrap them in banana leaves rather than corn husks and it's incredible. The masa is moist and buttery, while the filling of chicken and potato bursts with flavor. I could literally eat 10 of them in one sitting. My mouth is watering right now while thinking of them. First time here. Unfortunately, they only serve Spicy Pickled Cabbage and Spicy Pupusa sauce here. Some, like Mom are allergic to spicy food and she was sad they did not have the non spicy Pickled Cabbage version for the two as an option. The Atole de Elote was very good! The pupusas are amazing, the sopa de rez and the sopa de gallina are both crazy good. El curtido can be a bit too spicy at times. Yesterday, I drove from Huntington Harbour area just to pick up dinner. We ate the soups during cold days and my son recovering from a cold soup is always a great cure. We ordered 4 pupusas, I specifically told the lady on the phone they are for 4 individuals to wrapped them separately. Today, my son tells me there is no curtido. Who eats pupusas without curtido. My El Salvadoran friend suggested I come here. She didn't know the name of the place, but it is located on Harbor just southeast of the 22 in Garden Grove. BTW, the sign on the outside says Pupusas y Pollo in big letters and the name of the restaurant in small letters. It is located next to a boba store w/ karaoke and a billiards place. I ordered a cheese pupusa and a cheese and chicharron pupusa ($2.50 each) to eat here (para comer), In addition, I also ordered pasteles de carne (corn patties w/ beef) for take out ($6.50 - para llevar). The dough on the pupusas was very good. It was just as my friend described: Pillowy soft, not greasy and very tasty. The cheese was also very good. However, I did not taste much of the chicharron. The curtido (cabbage, onions and carrots) was super fresh and crunchy - (Very similar to coleslaw for Americans or kimchee for Koreans). I was stuffed after eating the two pupusas: 4 Stars. I gave the pasteles to my friend and he said they were very good also. He said they tasted like fried tamales due to the corn patties: 4 Stars. They also have fried chicken (specialty), rellenos de pescado (stuffed fish) and other El Salvadoran dishes. The lady behind the counter speaks primarily Spanish (luckily, so do I). So if you come here and can't speak Spanish, you will have to point at the pics on the menu. In addition, don't come here if you are in a hurry. Service is very leisurely: 3 Stars. Ambiance is very basic w/ tables you will find in any casual latin restaurant in So CA. All the clients seemed to be El Salvadoran based on their accents: 3 Stars. My favorite pupusas are queso con chicharrón and the pupusas from this restaurant are good but not quite the absolute best. I've never had pupusas where the chicharrón con queso mixture is really really mushy and not to mention, light pink on the inside. It has flavor and I especially love it when the cheese oozes out of the pupusas and the cheese gets nice and crispy. Soooo good. The horchata here isn't your typical Mexican horchata so keep that in mind! It's delicious and refreshing. Doesn't look like it's dairy-based.
