It appears that it was placed here on November 7, 2014 and was dedicated by the Mayor of Valdosta. It is these cool little discoveries that I like when I'm in a new city or town. It is just a nice accent to the vibe of the city. We need to support art in our communities and presort in our communities.

It commemorates and shows with the growth of that city was and also gives us a glimpse of the path that led us to today.

It is little more then a sidewalk and some shrubs…read more It is to remember a gentleman named William "Mack" Freeman, who owns the flower gallery and had a vision on creating the downtown area into a vibrant part of the community. He passed away on March 13, 2000 at only forty-one years of age, but this area is a lovely way to remember a man who was obviously beloved in his community. Again, this is not really a park, but more of a tribute. But it is a nice tribute that I'm glad that I found this while walking around downtown Valdosta, Georgia.

The historic court house is in downtown Valdosta, the seat of Lowndes County. This is the 7th…read morecourthouse in the county's history, the first several were destroyed by fire. Oddly, none of the destructions during the Civil War. The previous one had been a two story red brick structure but it was demolished in 1904 and this one, the current building, was completed the following year. The building is no longer active as a courthouse as the functions moved up the street to the Lowndes County Judicial Complex. Pretty to look through the windows though the building was secured. It is in the Neoclassical Revival style, designed by noted architect Frank Pierce Milburn (1868-1926) who is responsible for a number of other courthouses around the USA as well as the South Carolina State Capitol in Columbia. There are several monuments on the courthouse grounds including the Civil War Memorial, a 9/11 memorial and a "Veterans of All Wars." Street parking is all around though has a two hour limit. Erected a full fifty years after the end of the Civil War, this monument stands on what was, at the…read moretime, the Lowndes County Courthouse. Standing thirty or so feet tall, the obelisk has a Confederate soldier at the top. He stands in uniform, hands clasped at the top of his upward-pointed rifle. He seems to be looking south, with his back to the courthouse. The main inscription reads, "Erected by Valdosta Chapter, U.D.C. No. 471. 1911 'Lest We Forget.'" with "Comrades" below and "Our Confederate Dead" below that. At this time, there are no other context plaques. I took my kids to the Valdosta theater today for a noon movie. I bought our tickets online and…read moreplanned to buy pizza there so they could eat lunch while we watched the movie. When we arrived, the food machines were down -- which apparently isn't the first time this has happened. Their food and snack options are already limited, so this completely changed our plans. Because of that, I asked for a refund. The manager initially agreed and started processing it, but then was stopped by who I assume was the owner and told they could not issue the refund. Instead, I was offered a paper ticket pass, which was not the outcome I wanted since this situation was not my fault. On top of that, the theaters are consistently not very clean, which has been an ongoing issue. Overall, this was a frustrating experience, especially when taking small kids. Better communication, cleaner theaters, and honoring refunds when services aren't available would go a long way.
