I went to Uncle Ed's to get a new battery as mine was dead. The very next day, my car's electrical system started going crazy and my car died in the middle of the road. I ended up having it to get it towed to the dealership. I was told by the dealership that the battery in my car was not only installed wrong but it was also the wrong battery for my car. This was the reason my car went crazy and shut off in the middle of the street. I had to pay for a tow and a new battery from the dealership. I went back to Uncle Ed's to return my 1 day old wrong battery, and I was told they would not refund the money. I am not sure why they think it is ok to not resolve the issue. They installed it wrong, it was the wrong size and I had to get a new one. I am beyond disappointed in this business and their customer service. Needless to say I will never be back. Yup, I fell for it, so my bad. The $100 oil change and subpar service to boot. I do blame myself but I've gotten my oil changes there for years and felt like other than the constant upsell, the business was on the up-and-up. Maybe a few dollars more, but nice guys, could always find a coupon. Heh, maybe today I was charmed by the lack of upselling. They did make sure my hazard lights work (was that warning?) but they didn't toss out the usual variety of service suggestions or replacement parts. When asked if I wanted full synthetic vs a synthetic blend, I asked the price difference and was told $10. That sounds reasonable, right? Well, that's $10 per quart my friends. Not $10. Which makes sense if you're using your brains. Again my bad. So that happened, and while that happened other things didn't. Like, they didn't do the usual 14-point or 7-point or 17-point or whatever is inspection, like turn signals, and windshield wipers, etc. They did top of the antifreeze or see it seems but there was none of the usual show and tell. Which to be honest, I wasn't minding. When asked if I had any coupons, I asked what they've got--because usually they have them stored in your account. MY BAD, ok. I get it. I'm taking full responsibility here. Because I wasn't guarding myself, I got got. They did take $7 off (not per quart, lol) but they didn't take off the "household rewards" I've accumulated from past visits. Again, my bad. And they didn't reset the change oil message, which is easy enough. I did it myself when I got home just to grind in the fact that I paid $100. Oh, and they're out of stickers but supposedly I won't need another oil change for another 12 months. We'll see about that. When I say "we", I mean "me" because I won't be going there again, and they won't miss me because the world is full of fools of all types. But don't do it. Don't be like me. Do better for yourself. P.S. In addition to whatever weirdness Covid has left upon the service industry, I see now that the chain was purchased by Fullspeed Automotive. I don't know how much that factors in but next time I'll wait for the by appointment only honest little shop (not shoppe) down the road to fit me in. There's a reason why they're so busy. read more

I highly recommend Uncle Ed's Oil Shoppe for anyone in the metro Detroit area. I've been coming here consistently since moving here and have been to several locations. I always get the BEST service of any quickchange oil place ever. I also appreciate that they always hire young black men and regularly promote them to management positions. So many service industry type places today seem to have miserable workers who begrudgingly wait on you with a sour attitude. Coming here for an OIL CHANGE always makes me happy because the employees and managers are respectful (I've dealt with some serious dicks when it comes to work on my cars), efficient and overall seem to not hate their job. I find it humorous that other reviewers complain about "upselling" - seriously, that's just doing good business. If you keep track of your services and know what you need and don't need or if it's not in your budget, just say "no." They only make recommendations based on standard vehicle maintenance so none of their recommendations are out of left field people. Sheesh. My dealership tries to upsell just as much and they aren't as nice about it as these guys. Additionally. Of COURSE your dealership is cheaper. But, I've never been in and out of mine in 15 minutes. I'm willing to pay for that convenience. Heck, even the "quick change" lane at the dealership requires you to exit your vehicle and exit in their lounge for at least an hour. I've been coming here regularly and have turned down services due to my budget and have also been told many times "you're up to date on all your recommended services... so just oil today?" I've also pulled in to have them check a couple things out for me and they've done so at no charge. read more

These folks were awesome. My friend had a recent oil change and the oil light came on. There was a puddle of oil around the filter and the wrong gasket so oil was leaking. We stopped in here to get an oil change and these folks drained the oil, cleaned it all up, put in a new gasket, secured the filter and poured the oil back in. They wouldn't let us give them a dime. We can't thank you enough, this could have been a huge disaster, and my friend was visiting the area from Canada. 10/10 would recommend. Thank you again, so much! read more

Totally terrified of the service we got there, not because it was bad, but because it was the most well-oiled machine feeling you can get for, well... oiling your machine. As I was pulling up, they started shouting out directions as to how best align and dock my car, which made me very anxious and a little self-conscious but once I parked and friendly mechanic Matt started explaining the process, I knew this was the place for me. They do everything right in front of you--with you. I felt like I was participating in the process instead of just crossing my fingers and waiting in some white room, drinking stale coffee, hoping they were changing the oil instead of reusing it (Right?! True unhappy story from cheap competitor service.) The manager, Rick, was super helpful, friendly... you can tell that they are trained on the upsell, but that super didn't matter to me because they operate with the energy of complete competence and they aren't pushy at all. Just extremely fast, and good at what they do. Three or four people work at the same time on your vehicle to maintain an efficient, ten minute oil change. You can wait in the comfort of your car, gawking at the crazy teamwork, marveling at the code that is mechanic-speak... Never thought an oil change might be the most exciting part of my day. Nice guys but all I wanted was an oil change and it cost me $130!! They told me I had to have synthetic oil or else I could lose my warranty (maybe true but I thought I saw mini coopers can take conventional, but they might be right). The synthetic oil was $80 which somehow became $110 (they said something about an added up charge for synthetic oil) and then they told me they needed to top off some other part of my car for another $15. They also tried to sell me new wipers in the front and back (because mine are "streaking" but I don't have an issue with that) which would've been another $80+. And on top of all this they tried to sell me a few other things (I can't remember what they were - something about cleaning everything under the hood) and each of those services would be $100. Overall, if I had said yes to everything they tried to sell me, I would have spent around $500. read more

I feel like I can trust Uncle Ed's. I've been to many oil change places in my time, and the majority of the time I leave with an uneasy feeling. But not with Uncle Ed's. As soon as you pull in they get moving. They have numerous people working on your car simultaneously. One checks your lights, turn signals, cleans your windshield and checks your tire pressure. Another gets moving on changing your oil, and then another checks all your filters and tops off your fluids. They show you everything so you can rest assured things really were done. The guys at this location are SO nice! They actually made my 15 mins spent there very enjoyable. Yes, they're a bit pricey, but I'll gladly pay $40+ tax for all of their services, efficiency and my piece of mind. It's not worth saving the $10-15 to go elsewhere, at least for me. I left with an oil change, clean windshield, new back turn signal (didn't know it was out), more coolant and transmission fluid and an add'l 4-10 pounds of pressure in my tires. Sounds good to me! On the top of your receipt there is a website and number for you to take a survey. If you do, you get a discount off your next service. And you can stop in and get your fluids topped off again in btwn oil changes (by showing your receipt). I'm a firm believer in 'you get what you pay for', and won't be going anywhere else. read more

Getting my oil changed here was an experience. There was about 3 to 4 guys working on my car at a time. They topped off my fluid change my oil and even put on cool/goofy entrance routine that I liked. You will not get this at those big chain retailers. I definitely recommend this place. To the staff's credit, they will take a "no" for an answer and not try to pressure you. I understand that they're just doing as they are required to do. Tom (the legend) is the best, as are all of their employees. They don't harass you for things you don't need and are very helpful. Super fast, professional, and always funny and kind. I got my oil changed today and they also threw in a winter cleaning package that was discounted so that it was free AND my oil change costed less than it usually would. Got my oil changed here. They tried to up-sell me on several products along the way which is fine, but I just needed an oil change. Here is the problem though, they spilled oil on my engine, which is sloppy. Furthermore, the same day I got the oil change my cylinder started misfiring. I got my spark plugs, coil pack, and wire harness replaced to try and resolve the issue but to no avail. Hundreds of dollars later, after having a Ford specialist look at the car, it was determined that my check engine sensor (whatever is called) appeared to be tempered with. In addition, he identified that my ECU got shorted / damaged as well. All in all, I had to get a new ECU, get it re-programmed to get my cylinder from misfiring. Now this could all be a coincidence, but it just seems odd that this would all happen the same day RIGHT AFTER the oil change that I got here. There are A LOT of oil shops out there, with great hardworking mechanics and owners. Go to one that doesn't shamelessly up-sell you on everything, and that doesn't leave your engine looking like you spilled a quart of oil on it. I will leave it there, but this place does NOT deserve your business. read more

My crappy Ford Fiesta 2013 had it's transmission replaced 2 months ago and there was a mention of a crushed oil filter. Fast forward to this week when I noticed leaked oil in the driveway and a dry dipstick. I couldn't relinquish my car to the dealer just yet and after adding oil to my engine I headed to Uncle Ed's in a wave of concern. Really friendly staff, just like all the reviewers here. They washed the underside of my car, checked for leaks, and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. They advised me to check the oil level every few days, and to take the car back to the dealer that did the original work. They didn't charge me for the advice. Felt all taken care of the whole time and was out the door in 10 minutes. What a relief until I can get to the dealer. Definitely coming back for a quick oil change. read more

From the moment I waited to be seen, to when I was helped, Tom (the manager) went above & beyond. Not only was he very helpful & honest, but he also took time to be playful/silly to my two kids in my car (who were not excited about being there ;)). Horrible service! They do not care about their customers or their customers cars. They put conventional oil in my synthetic car then I had to pay the $100 fee to flush the oil and pay for a synthetic oil change. Never had any problems with my brand new 2015 car until I started going to this uncle eds. Now my cars engine makes a ticking noise and it would not start today (it's been 3 days since I've had them fix their mistakes). They do not communicate with their customers and are very rude when the customer tries to ask questions to inform themselves about what is going on. I came here on a Sunday at around 2PM because NO other place was open, my dealership wasn't open, nor was my family mechanic - this was the only place I could find in a 45 minute radius on a Sunday. I overfilled the oil in my car by 3X the amount 2 days prior and there was so much smoke coming from my exhaust it filled my whole parking garage that day with smoke and burning smells, the car was shaking when driving, it was terrible and unbeknownst to me, overfilling your oil can cause a blown head gasket, so my oil needed to be drained. I called and they saw me right away, they were able to drain my oil and refill it to the correct amount in a matter of 10-15 minutes at most. Upon startup my car started normally (it was having trouble starting when I filled it up too high) and there was no white smoke and no smell. Best of all? They charged me $0 to do this!! IT WAS FREE! I don't know if its something they do to get customer loyalty but it worked, I went to the bank nearby and got $10 out to tip them because I was appreciative of their work. I called my dealership and had them look at my car the next day and my Cadillac was perfectly fine. No damage, and I just got lucky. I will come back for basic oil changes and repairs to this specific uncle Ed's from now on. They even told me over the phone they can drain it but make sure I take it to a mechanic - they had no interest in scaring me or trying to make money off me which is hard when it comes to the automotive business. Reading the other reviews it's not a surprise that they have pushy sales people. I went in just wanting a quick oil change and the assistant manager made it seem like I shouldn't even be driving my car because I haven't had a transmission flush, seeing my pregnant belly he decided to bring my baby into it to get me to replace my filter "you don't want your baby breathing that in," I have never felt so taken advantage of in a garage than I did that day. Long story short, my car didn't need the flush for another 100,000 and it slips gears after having it. They sent me to their buddy to look at it, he found nothing wrong, surprise surprise! They say this isn't how they train their employees to sell services, but look at all the reviews! I will tell every friend, client, and stranger that I can and I myself will never go back! read more

i had an emergency that required a lot of driving so i had to get an oil change asap. it was a sunday and most places were not open, but ed's was so i went. they were open early in the morning, the guy on the phone was really nice. the guy working on my car noticed i had a set of windshield wipers in my backseat i'd been meaning to put on. he put them on for me....for a charge. then he told me the wipers i got weren't exactly good enough so i bought other ones at the shop. for $30. the oil change itself cost $59.99, kind of hefty when they didn't replace my filter, saying it was out of stock and that you can get oil changes for $15.99 now. i'm glad they were able to help out but my bill ended up being over $300. i'll be going back to my old place now and thinking twice about scheduling an oil change on a sunday and waiting last minute. read more

I would consider myself knowledgeable about cars. I went to the Uncle Ed's on Telegraph in Bloomfield Hills. While they did good work, they were overpriced and tried to sell alot of unnecessary services and over=priced services. For example, they told me I needed new windshield wipers and quoted the price of $13. I was going to do it, then found out that the wipers were different sizes on the right and left and the other one would be $19. I really didn't need new wipers but eventually bought new ones at Costco for a total of $13. They also wanted about $20 for a new air filter which I later bought at a auto parts store for $6. The oil change itself was over $50. I could have gotten it almost anywhere else for no more than $25. They gave me a coupon for $20 off the next oil change. I am not going back. read more
