We have been visiting Uncle Sushi for years. Their sushi rolls are beyond creative and always full of flavor. The staff is always friendly and attentive. Take out is timely as promised and well packed for travel. They are very busy on Friday night's so plan accordingly. We tried the pho for the first time last night and it was love at first bite. I have no idea why we waited so long to try it. (Yes, I do. Because it's so hard to pass up the sushi!) Ahhhhmazing. I'm already craving my next bowl! I only do sushi in one of two places in Providence and this is one. One roll in particular.....the Kayla roll. If you're getting sushi here then the Kayla roll is a sure bet. The rolls are huge and topped with all kinds of deliciousness and crunchy. Well worth the $10 for each. The restaurant in general is very small but well appointed and neat. The staff is always friendly. The only drawback in the last couple times I've come here is that sometimes the wait is super long for no apparent reason. Just got take out here again last week. We have sustained our twice monthly take out ritual from here for close to a year without incident. These visits continued after they re-opened after the much-publicized health department debacle. In fact, the food has been absolutely delish and fresh. I know fish and this fish is fresh - every time. My favorite is the Cindy Roll - spicy tuna inside with eel and avocado outside and my special touch - I add tobiko on the outside. What can I say? I am crazy for caviar. The huz is ever true to Kayla...Roll. The roll is shrimp tempura inside with crab flake and crispy crunch outside...with a generous drizzle of spicy mayo. We got the wings last time to mix it up. They were meaty - as well as good and flavorful, but a little too messy for me. My husband was all-up-to-his-wing-loving-elbows over them. A guy thing? Perhaps. As an added bonus, the hospitality is consistently good. Either Uncle or his son has prepared my order - always with a smile. That goes a long way with me. EZ on and off Route 37's Reservoir Ave exit keeps this restaurant in our regular take-out rotation. BYOB (great for eating in - or for sipping while you wait for them to roll your sushi!) By far some of the best sushi I have ever had! My fam and I make it a point to eat here (via takeout these days) as often as possible when we are visiting from out of town. The fish is SO fresh (they use two vendors to keep the freshest fish in rotation) and the rolls are SO delicious and creative. To boot, the owners are some of the sweetest, hardest working people - this is a family run spot and the love and hard work shines through. I've been eating at Uncle Sushi for a number of years now, and I truly am of the opinion that this is the highest quality and most creative sushi in the area, and possibly the state of RI. To start with the atmosphere and clear the air of any bad comments about it...this is a small sushi place that prides itself on its size and likely intends to stay small. What they have and where they are located in perfectly suitable for what they are doing. Don't let the lack of parking steer you away. Just go ahead and park on the street next to it, put one foot in front of the other a few times, and likely within less than two minutes you'll be right inside...simple as that. It's a small room with a few tables, meaning they are typically very attentive to service and your needs. And the Uncle himself...he is one of the most pleasant people I have ever met. I was away for quite a while once, and when I came back in he knew exactly who I was. This business is a source of pride to him, and he has kept it in the family with another generation of great sushi chefs behind him. Now to the sushi...extremely creative, very generous in size, and always as fresh as can be. I've had so many of the rolls, from the Taxi Roll, to the King Roll, Kayla Roll, the 4 Seasons Roll, and everything inbetween. Each and every one has a wonderful flavor balance, with ingredients that are bold in flavor and always fresh. I truly mean it when I say I have not had better sushi in the area as of yet, and for that reason, I will absolutely recommend this place (and have been for years) to anybody looking for great sushi, and I will continue to go back. uh oh....recently Uncle Sushi was closed due to unsanitary conditions in the kitchen. I am not happy about this and a little freaked out when I think about how many times we ate there. Alright, i've been here a few times before Uncle Sushi and Grill in Cranstonhas shut down after health inspectors found mouse droppings and evidence that a baby's diapers were being changed in the kitchen, among other violations. But to tell you the truth, their food was alright. I like the idea of having Pho and Sushi at the same time. I never got sick from eating their food. If you think about it. Some of the best foods comes from tiny dives that struggles with health code compliance. Just like rhode island tiny favorites, Olneyville New York Systems... I love this place, been there since they first opened and still going to this day. Sad the media has blown things out of proportion and made them look bad. However, I've been back since they've reopened and everything is still great! The service is even better since they can truly focus on your order. I love the sashimis but also love the sushi makis. Especially crispy salmon skin roll and the Firecracker! But the absolute best roll that I must order every time is the Kayla roll!! An appetizer I must also order every time is Spicy shrimp! Soo good!! Honestly, if they were that bad as the news portrayed, why on earth were they able to reopen the same week that they had volunteered to close down? Went here yesterday on a recommendation with my hubby, niece, & her boyfriend. The outside appearance left me a bit skeptical as the building looks a bit worn. The feeling was reinforced by how tiny it was inside (only about 8 tables) & woeful lack of parking. The place was dead when we got there; only person there was a child sitting alone at a table eating McDonald's & munchkins; an employee's child I presume. But, it did pick up. The volume of takeout...holy moly! The seats filled up shortly after we got there as well. Looks like we got lucky & showed up before the rush. Waitstaff was friendly, but very slow, never took a drink order (water it is), & told us wrong information on the ingredients of one of the items we ordered. Our appetizers came out one at a time, immediately followed by our dinner, which also came out one at a time. I finished me meal before my niece even got hers. As for the food, hubby & I ordered fried dumplings (pretty good), a chicken & veggie dish (hubby absolutely loved it), & Mexican Roll sushi (really good, but no spice despite the menu description...nothing wasabi couldn't fix). My regret was not ordering the Pho. More that 1/2 the customers ordered it & it smelled & looked fantastic. I need come, if for nothing else than to try it. Likely will get take out though. Came here twice after the unfortunate public health shut down and did not suffer any ill effects. I still enjoy the uber filling rolls such as the King's roll, Kayla roll, and the Auntie roll. My first revisit I went the King and Kayla as well as the spicy papaya. This time I tried the mild which was still spicy as hell. Don't know why I'm a glutton for punishment, but it was delicious and painful :P The decor hasn't been changed since the reopening so still the same. One thing that was a little troublesome was they had a little girl "helping" out which involved her taking a bag of candy to fill the candy tray but accidentally spilled it all over the floor. It wasn't the spilling candy that bothered me but having kids in the restaurant considering the last closure involved children toys in the kitchen. I had my fair share of being stuck in a restaurant all day as a child and I resent being there and having children there in general as there are health as well as dangers of having them there. I didn't see any children on my second trip after work so hopefully she's at home or being watched by friends. That time I ordered the dinner special which was prepared pretty well and just as filling as I expected. So filling I did get an upset stomach but I think I can chock it up to overeating. I will still come to this establishment as I see customers present on both visits and they appeared to enjoy the food and you really can't find the type of rolls they make anywhere else. read more

My girlfriend and I have been looking for an opportunity to try this place and the other day we finally got to come here. We had heard from our friends that this place was the next best thing for sushi, and we love sushi so we decided to check it out. The place itself is a hole in the wall and if you're driving to fast you will most certainly drive past it because we did.....twice. We thought it was a car wash at first because it is basically attached to one. They have a very small parking lot, but we parked across the street in the Honey Dew Parking lot, I don't know if this is allowed or legal, but life is short and we were hungry. The place inside is very small with only about eight tables. I would say it is for parties of four or less, anymore would be pushing it. It was not too busy when we went on a friday night. I think it was just us and two other parties there. I would suggest trying to sit away from the door during the winter because anytime someone walked in you get a nice punch in the face of the bitter cold to remind you its freezing out. It seemed as though most people get take-out from here because at least ten people came in for pick-up when we were there. The menu isn't too large and not very overwhelming. They have some crazy experimental rolls that I had never even thought of before. Such as combining spicy tuna with seaweed salad (awesome by the way). When we ordered we noticed the sushi took a very long time to come out and that is honestly my only real complaint with the restaurant. The staff was very nice and informative for any questions about rolls that we had and checked in a good amount of times to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. We had the Kayla Roll (which is a must and was amazing) and some other various rolls such as the California Roll (this one was OK) and the smoked salmon roll, which was very good. We also got the King Roll and this one packed a lot of flavor as well. All in all I would def try to check this place out if you get the chance and you like sushi. Ordered from this place, and it was through Postmates, they made the driver get there before starting the order, then said it would take about 50 minutes. They kept saying it would be 20 more minutes, 20 more... so we waited, but after 2 hours the driver hadn't received the order and when we called them directly - they told us it would be 30 more minutes and the person who answered could care less about our order. There are about seven tables in the building and they were filled with customers. The waitress was hustling and attending to all parties with efficiency and a smile. We did have to wait for our food. But we were not in a rush and it was worth the wait. We got the uncle sushi combo (spicy tuna roll, tuna roll, California roll, Boston roll), which came with soup and salad, and unagi sashimi for a little under $30. Have frequented this sushi house 2-3 times a year when I'm back home to visit family. It has been my traditional send-off lunch. While sushi quality is not extraordinary, it does the job of filling me up. When I go to Japanese restaurants, unless it's a buffet, I don't find it worth the money to spend on special rolls. But here, I think you definitely get the quantity to make your money worth it. The rolls are stuffed and packed with the protein in their descriptions. Today I got two special rolls - the firecracker and the powerline tattoo. The former heats you up with its spice. The latter is overflowing with scallops, eel, and octopus. If you're just mildly hungry, one roll would suffice given its size and contents. However, I came hungry and was craving some Vietnamese pho, too. This was the first time I ordered pho at Uncle Sushi. The stock lacked the beefy flavor that makes a flavorful soup. Plus points for the quantity of meat and noodles for its price point. It's hard to find a decent bowl of pho at a good price in RI, especially when there's a surplus in Boston. I would recommend grabbing an appetizer that will cut down the wait time until your sushi is made, especially if you order more than one roll because the impatient will get impatient. I'd suggest the seaweed salad or gyoza. The staff is friendly and Uncle remembers his loyal patrons. Also be smarter about parking - go across the street and park or even along the streets. The spicy papaya was way too spicy and barely have a taste to it, the service was ok but when I went-- it was the server's first day so I can't say that service was not well provided. I usually get sushi was a different restaurant but because of my friends high recommendation for the Kayla Roll, I tried it. DO NOT EAT HERE. 10 of us became VIOLENTLY ILL after eating at Uncle Sushi the night before a wedding. This place took out an entire bridal party including the groom from unsanitary conditions which included feces in the food preparation area (including evidence that a diaper had been changed here), the rice vinegar was being kept in a laundry detergent bucket that hadn't been cleaned appropriately and there were mice/ rat droppings under the serving doilies. EVERY person who had eaten sushi had diarrhea and vomiting for 2 days straight. This place may open and close but know the truth that it is completely unsafe to eat here. read more

And found out recently about the health violations which incidently i had offer it to five of my friends as the place to go for such on a Sunday and thats when they told me about the health violaitons issues. So , it is sad that although i did love the sushi and luckily did not become ill, i will not be going here ever again.! Awesome little sushi place--not to be underestimated! Usually we order the Gyoza, Pho, Philadelphia Rolls, and Crab Rangoon Rolls. Today we tried the combination fried rice and it was easily the best fried rice I've ever had. The meat was nicely browned and flavorful. The sushi is always fresh and well prepared. The Pho hot and delicious, Gyoza wonderfully crispy and not greasy at all. Oh--and don't forget to grab a Thai Iced Tea too. Service is fine. It isn't the kind of place to have a nice sit down dinner at because it is on the small side (8 tables).
