From the outdoor toilets to the regulars to the fantastic live music that seems to rise out of nowhere, the Pinnacle is unaffected by fashion, style or trend. It's beyond all of that which means nothing, and that makes it a precious and rare thing in Melbourne today. Long live the Pinnacle!

I love eggplant, so I was really happy to see the huge huge slices of eggplant on the plate covered in cheese and tomato sauce!! The dish was really satisfying. It also came with a small salad and some fries - or I guess "chips." (Please forgive me! I'm an American trying to adjust to Australia for a semester!) The place itself was nice and pleasant, although it was kind of hard to talk to people because the music was so loud (but I don't know if this is how pubs are).

Inside it looks a bit dark and broody but is actually pretty upbeat in atmosphere. The booths are a good size for medium groups, with one or two large enough to fit a bigger crew. Another plus is that the music's never too loud and it's easy to conduct a conversation. There're only a couple beers and one cider on tap, but the prices are the cheaper side of average, as is the food. The menu is your standard pub fare and nothing too special, but when lamb shank's on the specials board you can be sure it won't last long, so tender is the meat. They also do a particularly good chicken parma, which is on the larger side of average and enhanced by the option of self-serve chilli flakes at the kitchen counter. The bar staff are friendly, particularly Leon, who always gets to know the regulars. There're a couple of benches out the front that get filled pretty quickly on a warm evening, although the trees along the footpath have a cheeky habit of dropping bits and pieces of themselves into your drinks around springtime. There's also a recently revamped band room upstairs that hosts live music gigs most nights of the week and the occasional gallery exhibit. It also does trivia on a Monday night. All up, the Curtin is an easy and unpretentious staple pub where you can enjoy a relaxed couple of beers.

From what looks like your standard old dodgy pub on Bridge Road from the outside, inside is a sleek and yet comfortable space, with fabulous welcoming staff and a great vibe all round. The star of the day, the steak, did not disappoint. Cooked to perfection, a slab of Porterhouse so big I was unable to finish it, accompanied by a delicious rocket salad and scalloped potato. This was my first visit to the Spready, but it most definitely will not be my last!

Mind you, the odd thing that I have noticed is that people don't seem to sit at bars anymore - or at least they don't in most pubs, which makes the bar sitting pubs somewhat or a rareity. This, as you can probably guess, is not a bar sitting pub. Anyway, it is an okay pub, though not hugely fantastic. The funny thing was that since it is called the Coopers Inn I thought it might be connected with the Coopers Brewery, but as it turns out it has nothing to do with it - they just happen to have the same name. However, when I was last here I did notice that they do have Coopers Pale Ale on tap (a beer that I don't seem to drink as much as I used to, namely because it isn't as readily available in Melbourne), Mind you, this place does get pretty crowded with the after work crowd, and I do like the empty bottles of Contreau along the top of the bar, but as a pub, I'm not a huge fan.

It's spacious and leafy and great for large groups, and I love how hidden this pub is -- it's randomly tucked away in a residential neighborhood not far from the hustle and bustle of Brunswick Street. Unfortunately, it loses points for me based on food and service. The service has just always been terrible here. Surly dudes with acne scars and a bad attitude. My food experience here also wasn't good. I ate here once -- got the vegan salad, which looked like my only option -- and it was really bland and tasteless. I think it's great that pubs are serving vegan meals more often these days, but vegans are like anybody else -- they come to a pub to eat fatty foods and drink alcohol. It felt weird downing cheap jugs of beer with my workmates while having to delicately chew on a bowl of raw greens. The dressing was nice, but there was way too little of it, and too many giant leaves. So yeah, basically spent $18 on a giant bowl of greens with some cashews thrown in. Not pub food! Where's the veggie burger and chips?! Anyway. It's nice they made an effort to include something vegan and healthy -- but it was just so bland and boring. I think come here on a sunny day to drink but not eat. Soak up the sun in the beer garden. That's what The Standard does best.

The ambiance is fine, and pretty typical of pubs. We couldn't hear anyone at our table because the table next to us was so loud that's all we could hear. It wasn't even a juicy conversation they were having otherwise I wouldn't have cared. When they left it felt like the place was empty but it wasn't, just one large loud table who we could still hear as they walked down the street. It's a fun place though I guess.

Well, it turned out that this was the pub that I was looking for (damn Jedi mind-tricks). Anyway, I really like this pub. It's not hugely crowded and has a number of rooms where you are set yourself up, including this really cool lounge area under the stairs. They also have a pretty cool rooftop deck, though it doesn't afford the views that some other decks offer. It is quite relaxed and I probably should come here more often than I do, but it is a little out of my way (not that that is really an excuse).

Hot wings were more barbecue style than spicy and the wedges were cooked well. Everyone enjoyed their drinks. Mine was a spicy Bloody Mary with all the fixings. However, to at least give the place some justice, I decided to give it another shot, and it certainly was much better than I expected. There is no glamour whatsoever here. But having said that the place is full of character, the staff are friendly and the locals are a good laugh. I was craving a massive steak with chunky chips and a delicious sauce of some sort. The food came out pretty quickly and it was everything I had hoped and more. The steak was cooked to perfection medium rare, was a delicious cut of meat and had lashings and lashings of peppercorn sauce to go with it and dunk some chunky chips in to. The salad and bread and butter to accompany is an indication of just how Aussie this place truly is.... For around 14 bucks it was pretty impressive. It wasn't the caliber of the Napier but for over 10 bucks cheaper you know who is winning.
