Every summer I make a trip to Union Square Farmers Market. It is a strange love affair. Perhaps it has to do with the long New England winters, hence, I would long for all things summer. So, I used to go to the Central Square Farmer's Market every single Monday but that was when I didn't have a job one summer and lived two blocks away. Now that I'm living back in Davis, I needed to find a new market. You may be reading this saying "doesn't she know there's one in Davis?" I do but when you don't get home from work until 6:30 at the earliest, it's hard to make that one. So, what should I do? Take the 87 bus to Union Square on Saturday mornings of course! A good selection of local farms, including my favorite, Kimball Fruit Farm, plus honey, Taza chocolate, fresh mozzarella, and live music. Volunteering here almost every week is my favorite start to the weekend. The vendors have stayed pretty much the same since the opening of the covid market this season. We are only allowed to have a certain amount of shoppers in the market area at one time. Because of this there is an opportunity to make reservations on the website for time slots. This reservation line moves much faster than the walk up line. Around 11:30 is when the crowd dies down, this would be the best time to come without a reservation. From fresh produce, cheese, pastries & bread, kombucha and more, this market really is worth the stop! read more

Iggy's. If you've never, you need to now. Veggies? Um, duh. It's a farmers' market. Among the 4-5 displays, Kimball shows a fierce rainbow. But wait! In the glass? Free wine tastings from rotating vineyards. For dessert? Taza Chocolate featuring samples of classics and new stuff from their factory store around the corner. On the napkin? Keep your knives honed and ready with Siraco Sharpening Service on the last Saturday of every month. But wait again! In your ears? Folk bands kickin' it live. On your face? Paint. Yep, face painting. Union Square goes beyond a market; they feature a full fair. And it's wonderful. read more

Truly, what is there not to love? My favorite Saturday morning pastime is rambling over to the Union Square FarMar to gaze on babies, puppies, and bluegrass. From 9-1, you too can participate in this ritual! Vegetables! Fruits--get there early! Cheeses! Chocolates! Breads! Uniquely flavored popsicle treats! Similarly unique ice cream snacks! Boozey drink sips for the 21+ crew! Flowers, Green City Growers, CSA pick-ups, oh my! Seriously, I'm getting out of breath because I'm yelling this to my dictation-taking helper monkey, Jamon. LOVE. This is one of the (many) things that makes Union Square such an amazing place to live. Yes, it's small but the square can only handle so much and they really pack in a fantastic variety of products and vendors. No review of the market would be complete without a shout out to Fiore Di Nonno and their delish cheeses. If you're early slash lucky you can pick up the string cheese which is so delicious it's difficult to put it in to words. A few of the other highlights include the amazing seafood sold from the refrigerated truck at the end of the square where I purchase what are easily the best scallops that I have ever had in my life. There's also Kimball Fruit Farm which I just adore. I refer to them as "my farmers" since they are also at Dewey Sq in Boston so I see them several times a week and they've always got amazing produce and will help you find what's right for you. Iggy's is there to help satisfy your need for breads and other baked deliciousness. Just don't forget to turn around and check out the table that sells the amazing choco-banana bread. It's a little pricey but so rich and fantastic that you'll forget all about that after one bite. This year they've added wine to the mix which goes well with the Taza chocolate you can pick up which is made what, two blocks away? Can you get any more local? The other vendors represented here are no less important I'm just at a loss for their names but I can tell you I've picked up the most amazing purple carrots, eensy baby basil, fresh pea tendrils, beets, herbs, fresh flowers, hummus, nut butters, and SO. MUCH. MORE. (there's a meat vendor as well but you'll need to dig in to that on your own) Come down to the square, enjoy, and support the people who take such care to create this most fantastic little market. --- Side note: How dare anyone compare this to Haymarket, are you kidding me? That's where wholesalers dump their excess crap, thus you pay $3 for 25 lbs of onions and can salvage four. read more

The atmosphere, selection and experience are above any other you will find in the city. While you stroll from vendor to vendor, you can enjoy live music and plenty of samples/food for sale. This is my idea of heaven. This market has everything I could want, and the best selection. There's very little competition for produce items, almost every farm has a different selection. Union Square Farmers Market Managers and staff put together one of the best farmers markets in greater Boston, this one has ArtsUnion, live music, community integration, and a real emphasis on "Made in Somerville" Love it! read more

There's no reason the Union Square Farmer's Market has to be so good. Davis' is kinda lousy, Harvard's is OK, Kendall's is inadequate. But the Union Square Market packs as many local vendors of veggies, breads, cheeses, meats, and even teas as possible onto the plaza every Saturday morning. This makes it a breeze to pick up exactly what you're looking for each week, given it's in season, of course. I tend to buy from Kimball's Fruit Farm since they have the best selection of both fruits and veggies. Do note, though, that earlier in the summer, hot-ticket items like strawberries, raspberries, and tomatoes are gone by early in the AM, so arrive at or shortly after opening time to ensure top selection. Speaking of-- my only complaint? Y u so early, Union Square market? The only thing Harvard's Sunday FM has on Union's is the 10 AM start time. I live down the road, but 9 AM on a Saturday is a little harsh if you want to get to the market first-thing. I can't be the only Somervillain who values beauty sleep. read more

Being from a farm town, I done diggity dig farmers markets. But I was so sad and disappointed by this little market near my home. First off, Little is being nice, it's rather tiny. I do dig the live music that plays there, thus 2 stars. I hate, repeat HATE, the Whole Foods mentality that one needs to sell their children in order to afford to buy an apple just to be organic and natural, what? do we all drive Volvo's and talk about humanitarian causes as if we've ever really been there and know more about it then what we saw on the Discovery channel? This is the mentality and atmosphere I felt while browsing the goods at this market. Do yourself a favor, visit the Haymarket FM, much cheaper and more of a down to earth attitiude. I would love to start this year off by eating my words on this one, because this little market is just a hop skippity jump from my house, but I don't see it happening, two years in a row the prices, attitude and general feeling of this farmers market is sour at best. read more

Could use a few more produce vendors, but the ones there were all high quality, and the market was getting better by the end of the 2005 season (its first). The music and occasional craft tables are nice, adding to the feel that this was more than produce, a reason to come bump into your neighbors in the square. Activities for kids, breads and pies, and specialty Asian vegetables are all notably featured. Plus, show many local businesses that you bought from the market and they'll give you a discount! What I like most of all is that it's on Saturday, unlike most farmers' markets that happen at odd times during the week. All in all, a fun new reason to come down to Union Square. read more

I stopped by this past Sunday and they've started up a great little farmers market already. A few farm stands, plus two bakeries (one bread, one pies) and a number of local artists (jewelry, crafts, etc.) And, unfortunately for me, a folk-singing duo. Yeouch. But I did pick up some beautiful fresh fava beans and aromatic purple basil. Stop in at Union Bakery for a cup of strong, thin Brazilian coffee and browse the market. read more

Went for the first time last weekend. I was impressed at the variety of goods available despite the small number if stalls. Fruits and veggies, of course-- not everything under the sun, but every kind of green, edible flowers, strawberries, rhubarb, and so on. There's also Iggy's bread, farm-fresh baked goods (pies and cookies), Taza chocolate, meat and eggs, seafood, cheese, nuts and nut butters, and prepared Mediterranean foods. There's even a stall for bike tuneups, and live music. Nice. Someone mentioned the lack of ready-to-eat available. Not true! I followed a sign around the corner (next to Ronnarong's) to a BBQ run by Journeyman! Pulled pork, brisket, and veggie sandwiches, baked beans, pickled fiddleheads, cornbread, iced tea, shrub soda (?) and more. My sandwich and cornbread were amazing, especially the cornbread. They said they'll be BBQing it up every weekend while the farmers market is running. read more

This place literally checks all the boxes. Produce stands have more than just your typical grocery store veggies - last time I got some shishito peppers, tried husk cherry tomatoes (that actually taste like cherries), found purple peppers, and multiple kinds of radishes. Now THAT is a produce stand. Butchers, bakers, fishmongers and cheesemongers all sling everything you need to turn that produce into a full meal. Farm fresh eggs are available everywhere you look, and you can even get booze at the meade stand. Wrap it all up in a cute little square with live music, bouncing babies, and puppies loping around everywhere, and you have yourself one hell of a Saturday morning. Gives me a reason to get up early on Saturdays. This year, there's a fresh bread vendor selling a variety of really good whole-grain breads. And I don't know, it seems like the produce is very good this year. There wasn't much available in June when the market started -- vendors told me the growing season was delayed -- but I've been buying peaches and fresh tomatoes all through July & August and, matched with that fresh bread, it's a really good breakfast. The prices are higher than say, Haymarket or Market Basket. But you are supporting local farmers, so that's a warm fuzzy feeling for you. Plus the produce is good quality. Hit the farmer's market first thing and then go around the corner to the Korean grocery, or Capone's Deli or the meat market a little further up the way, or have coffee at Sherman's, or try the Brazilian cafe right next to Capone's. read more

Huge fan of this farmer's market! The focus is on quality, not quantity - it's a smaller farmer's market that packs a big punch. There is a wonderful variety of vendors, selling everything from baked goods to freshly made cheese to locally made chocolate to a myriad of fruits and vegetables. Some of the highlights for me include: 1. Jordan Brothers Seafood - they usually bring about 10-12 different types of seafood. Certain items like tuna and bluefish will sell out quickly. I am partial to the tuna steaks and scallops. In both instances, the prices are not much more than a local grocery store and the fish actually has TASTE! 2. Kimball Fruit Farm - they bring a truckload full of different fruits and vegetables. In the spring and summer, there selection of berries and grapes cannot be beat. As summer transitions to fall, those berries are replaced with several varieties of apples (including my fave = honeycrisp). Other autumnal items include brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes, and a variety of squashes. Additionally, the selection of tomatoes and great descriptions of each set this vendor apart from others. 3. Taza Chocolate - 'nuff said. 4. Stillman's - has an excellent selection of meats and poultry. I am a frequent buyer of their eggs, which are $4 per half dozen and $7 for a dozen. When I am making eggs as a stand alone item (poached, hard-boiled, etc) the flavor really shines on these. I've also tried their chorizo, which is quite tasty and unlike store bought varieties, has 4 or 5 ingredients, all of which you can pronounce!!! Union Square can offer its challenges with parking, though I've found using Hubway is a good solution on nice days when I decide not to drive. read more

This is my favorite farmer's market . . . it's becoming a ritual for my hubby and I to walk here on Saturday mornings to get fresh salad makings. You can get a variety of lettuces for only $2 each! I'm looking forward to later in the summer when there will be more of a variety of veggies. Fresh tomatoes are my favorite thing in the summertime, and I don't have a garden of my own. The girl who works at the Taza Chocolate booth was very very nice and informative. We bought $20 worth of chocolate, but it is simply the best chocolate! I like that there is lots of colored chalk on hand for the little kids to draw all over the sidewalk. There's just such a nice vibe about this market, and I loved the live music that was played on the opening day! read more

Love, Love, Love. I went to the Union Square Farmers Market this past Saturday and even though it is a bit of a hike from Boston, it's worth it. I have been searching high and low for a good farmers market in the area that's on a weekend and not a week day. Well, I found one. The options at this market are fantastic: fresh fish in a refrigerated truck, breads, bagels, pies & pastries, locally grown veggies from Somerville, homemade hummus (the woman who sells it is the one who makes it), local wine, amazing mozzarella, beautiful flowers, and all of the veggies & fruits you can imagine. The market is small; you can walk from end to end in 5 minutes, but it's jam packed with an awesome variety of goods. I was able to stock up for the week with (heirloom!) tomatoes, habenero peppers, chili peppers, potatoes, peaches, green peppers, green beans and fresh hummus. I can't wait to go back next week and this time around I will be buying some mozzarella and fresh salmon from the seafood truck. Did I mention Union Square is also just an awesome place to be? Woohoo, Union Square Farmers Market! I am a fan and I am telling my friends! read more

I can't wait for the market to start again this year (June 9th!). While its not the biggest market around, some weekends when the weather was cloudy or rained, it was as small as 3 vendors, the convenience factor of it being on a saturday helps tremendously. The Central Sq market stops at 6pm on a weekday, cmon. Toscaninis had a small bread & baked goods selection, in addition to the veggie & fresh herb selections from several local farms. Some weekends have live music, children's performers and craft fairs. If you're coming from outside Union, you can hit up Shermans for coffee first, and then stop by any of the fab ethnic supermarkets on the way home (reliable for korean, capone for pasta, and several indian & brazilian stores). read more

Live music, public art, ridiculously big bunches of herbs, iggy's bread, homemade pies, taza chocolate, tomatoes in the summer and apples in the fall, plus hard to find veggies like tat soi and hen of the woods mushrooms!! I heart you Union Square Farmers Market and all your vendors and customers in their ratty cotton dresses and cutoff jean shorts. You are tiny, but you have every vegetable I could possibly need. A bank machine is on the premises to make life easy. And, I can hit the pub, the Thai restaurant, the Korean Market, the coffee shop, or the taqueria in the same shot! read more

Sun shining, iced coffee in hand, live folk music in the background, adorable toddlers waddling around, fresh foods in abundance. The Union Square farmer's market is my favorite Saturday morning activity (post sleeping in). First of all, it is close to some great brunch and coffee and donut stops so you can walk off your breakfast while you meander around the market. But if you don't grab something ahead of time, there is a local coffee pop-up and several bread/pastry booths that have you covered. I love the sense of place this market has. So much pride in Somerville! I also love the free samples of mead, cider, cheese, ice cream, etc, etc. Bring cash if you can, but some booths will have a square if you forget. Biggest downside for me - the location isn't super roomy, so it can be hard to find space to pop a squat and people watch/listen to the music. But overall, it's a gem. read more

All winter I count down the weeks until this comes back. All summer I try not to think about the end of the market. Its a vicious love cycle that never ends. Amazing prices, amazing fruit, veggies, bread, flowers, chocolate, etc! Everyone should go and experience this top-notch farmers market to see how its done right. read more

The Union Square Farmers Market is the beating heart of the newer, more accessible Union Square. Plenty of local vendors and farms and a lot of side street parking. Also, I love any farmers market that is on a weekend. That's the time to have them. If only the whole world knew. read more

The Union Square Farmers Market really gets humming in the middle of summer but even now (mid-may) you can get goodies like ice cream, mushrooms, bread, plants and hard ciders or fermented goods. Bonus points for them supporting the 1:1 SNAP program. If you have SNAP your $10 gets you another $10 on top to make the market more affordable. Check it out, its a grand ole time. read more

It's a lovely market - live music, various vendors (even meat!) and food places. 1. Bread - yes yes yes, wonderful pastries, carb creations and delicious dips for them. Hand made? So aromatic. 2. Herb gardens and herb uses - yes - ask the vendors, they will help. 3. Meats - they are frozen, so I did not buy, but having seen another frozen meat vendor at the fresh market in Arlington, I succumbed because I suppose that's the practice of fresh markets (duh, Gen, it's an outside market and the meat must stay fresh). 4. Wonderful produce - delicious red plums, amazing tiger tomatoes, pungent arugula, etc 5. Nothing like supporting your local farmers, and this is a great way of doing it. Yes, earlier in the season the selection is a bit limited (being as they're 'local farmers', the weather isn't conducive to all veggies earlier in the season), the selection improves each week. We recently moved to Somerville and the Union Square Farmer's market has been an AMAZING perk. Jordan's Seafood - fresh, delicious, decently priced. We love their swordfish and flounder. Dan's Bread - You HAVE to buy this. It's so filling. It's so simple. It's delicious. It's the only bread I eat now. Fruits and Veggies abound. Organic options and I'm sure the non-organic farmers would have a lot to tell you about why they are not organic and why their food is still healthy. Also, YOU DON'T NEED CASH!!!! This is the best. You simply take your debit or credit card to the red tent in the middle of the market, tell them how much money you want to spent, they swipe your card (No Fee!) and hand you cute little chips to pay with. All the vendors take them happily! The live music is really fun. To food is delicious. Great gluten-free baked goods. It is a smaller farmers market and you do want to get there a little on the early side if you don't want to miss out on the most popular fruits and veggies. But this is to be expected - it's a local market not a chain grocery store. Early local eater gets the peach :) read more

I prefer to support the local farmer, and this farmer's market is open on Saturdays, unlike the one in Davis Square, which brings out the whole community. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of vendors, and it took me less than five minutes to browse the market. Since i live nowhere near this place, it's hard for me to justify shopping here often, but i did like the ambience of the neighborhood. And if you have time, the Neighborhood Restaurant is in the same area and worth stopping in for a meal. read more

This is the only farmers' market in the area that I like enough that I'll literally go out of my way to go to it. It has produce that I've rarely or never seen at other area markets, including kohlrabi, hen of the woods mushrooms, rutabagas (hey, they need love from somebody), celery, escarole and a much wider range of radishes than the 1-2 types typical available at other markets. Cook Farm's granola is really good just to eat out of hand as a snack, and by squirreling away 1-2 jars of jelly per trip last autumn, I had enough jam and apple butter from their stall to last the entire winter. Groundwork Somerville sporadically has a Made In Somerville stand where Somerville teens sell their hand-raised plants, produce, and cut flowers, and their booth alternates with a demonstration booth run by the Urban Homesteaders League and a knife/tool-sharpening booth (check the market's website for the rotating schedule) . Until this year Valley View sold their really delicious goat cheese here (it's still available in season at Dave's Fresh Pasta and probably also at Sherman Market). There are five vendors that come to both Davis and Union markets (two orchards, mozzarella, chocolate, herbs), but the rest are different at each location. I wish that this area had more farmers' markets that ran more than once a week in each location, so that people could buy as much fresh produce as they needed for a few days without having to go to markets in different locations to do so. Perhaps someday we will follow the way so many other places do it... As a sidenote: I seriously don't get the attitudes so many area residents have about the local farmers' markets. They want lots more vendors; they want the produce to be cheaper than at big-box stores - seriously? Where exactly would these "lots more vendors" fit in the locations the city has designated for its markets? And are my fellow city folk so detached from farming that they think it's as cheap for a farmer to pay for equipment and staff to grow their produce, and then a vehicle to transport it in, gas to get it there, and people to staff the stall, as it is for a big-box store to have it shipped from some giant agri-business in who knows where with who knows what growing practices (not to mention labor practices)? read more

A bit small but still a great market. I live right up the street so it is super convenient and a great way to spend a Saturday morning browsing the goods and talking with neighbors. I especially love the Toscanini's stand, I can grab one of their awesome ham & cheese croissants and munch on it while browsing. Get there early because the produce goes fast. There are usually crafts for kids to do so it's family friendly and they sometimes have live performers playing. Check it out! read more

Don't get me wrong. I admit it, I like farmers markets as much as the next heirloom tomato eatin' , hemp tote bag carryin', NPR listenin' bobo champagne socialist. But I'm astounded that I just paid 6 bucks for three locally grown peaches. I must say, they were absolutely delicious but I paid a premium. I used to think the only way to get price gouged was at Wholefoods. But now I know better. read more

This is one packed farmers market. Be prepared for long lines; the live music, cute kids and dogs, along with free wine samples, should keep you mellow despite the chaotic crowd. It is a very social and happy scene, that is for sure. read more

The Union Square Farmers Market is awesome. There's a great variety of vendors selling everything from free range organic meat, dairy, and eggs to to farm fresh organic produce. My favorite vendor is Drumlin Farm. While it can be pricey, it's usually worth it! We love Jordan Brothers fish and sometimes, I snag a Popsicle for breakfast from Josh, the kombucha dude. They bring in a nice variety of guest vendors who sell baked goods, snacks, and wine. And they try to make it an experience by adding workshops, kids activities, cooking demos, cookbook swaps, author signings, and live music. I always look forward to the market! read more
