I am making another review, I am so glad I graudated here a month ago. So now I feel safer to explain more in detail. At this school, the school cares more about their image than what they actually do. They have little ''events'' but they mostly put it on their instagram even when there's a cellphone ban. They do attendance challenges where if you show up consistently for a couple days you could get a 10$ Starbucks gift card. It's stupid, I know. They never clean the inside of the classroom building, they treated the cellphone ban as more important than students vaping, since they knew students smoke and smoke at that school but they dont do a single thing to stop it!! There was a burnt tampon found in the toilet - (no one knows why they were burning the tip of a tampon) someone reported it to the duke, and no consequences were given. The only people who actually care (In my opinion) are those at the wellbeing center. They let you come in and they welcome you even if they're going everyday, they actually care about mental health. Teachers like Ms. Ishii, Ms. Mitchell and Ms. Monge will put you on your last brain cells since their work is so hard, they will expect much out of you and I would warn against them unless you like teachers who are old school, would make you cry once or twice or close to crashing out, hesitating on respect for students, and having a spirit which made school less enjoyable due to their dark/ mean demeanors. The lunch is a dissapointmemt, instead of it being like an al you can eat buffet, they just throw food into being heat up and it's never handmade / cooked. Sometimes the cafeteria food is moldy or rotting, and it's open food where flies are flying around it. The theatre program was amazing, and we will sure miss Ronnie Sperling as our diretctor as he had decided to leave us after this year. As well since in Highschool a lot of students want to go to college, Uni doesn't really mention college to you until Junior year (Teacher wise), but I would recommend the college center since they just started that as we became seniors and It can be really helpful towards those who want the best academics. The dress code policy is stupid, Ms. Tucker Jones has a nasty attitude, I dont know if its because were both black and she's jealous I carry myself better than her, or she feels that she had to keep things in lock idk she just pissed me off. Also everyone booed the principal at graduation (Claudia Middleton) Anyways, If you end up bringing your child here it up to you. Goodluck, and be prepared to offer extreme emotional support, and money especially for senior year. But out of all the negative, here are some positive things I liked about this school. I mentioned being a black teen girl, we have a BSAP Counselor- Ms. Johnson. She took us to field trips for hocus, to go see a movie about being black, and watching a black play nutcracker. She also offers scholarship opportunities. I like this schools after school program educare, they offer a lot of snacks after school, tutoring and homework held ! :) Mr. Sabbagh had an excellent music progrgam- and if you wanna sing the national anthem for graduation go to him and try out even if you think youre not good enough do it try your best!!! As I said earlier the theatre program was good, so is the sports selection even tho this school is broke. I am alumni a warrior with a long legacy of family , generations deep into past generations including my Husband and his siblings . My husband and I sent out 3 children all IEP students , Audio processing, visual impairment and Autism and they all managed there own path threw a educational system that has evolved and changed , excepting students will various educational challenges that not long ago was not designed for students with specific challenges and thanks to the disability act and educational laws that opened doors and schools to be a least restrictive environment for all , students like our children now had more opportunities and the possibility of a better future. I have had great experiences and that's not say I haven't had my share of challenges in the past years with each of my individual children's educational experiences but I feel they had a great experience at Uni and the majority of the teachers and staff have been supportive id say it's probably 1 % of staff there who have given me reason? To question there ability to be fair and reasonable but the rest of the 99% have made my family feel like family . I will say any parents with children with IEP should educate themselves with educational laws and educational rights as some of my past experiences have thought me not all schools educators are not all well versed in educational rights and to ensure your children's educational plan and accommodations are being followed and supported, it's best to learn everything u can so u can advocate for the welfare of your child and remember to advocate for your child's rights with respect and kindness as your child's school educators may lack some of the knowledge you possess , most will be willing to work with you but in the case u run into the 1 % who resist then you need to be able to appropriately take proper action and defend your child's rights . This school suck certain staff do not care for students especially if students have an IEP my child attend his 9th an10th there failed no help I believe It's a lot of discrimination there he dread going .i do not like this school /staff honestly this sad they are not helpful at all especially returning calls and emails.they don't care if your child fail or pass all they care about is the attendance so they can get paid for the day whole staff needs to be investigated if you ask me . read more

Some of the teachers are phenomenal The counselor for honors students is top notch. It is an LAUSD and of course comes with that red tape but that is across the board at all LAUSD schools. My daughter got into UCLA and my son is on a good track so far as well. read more

Thank God I Graduated here During my time as a freshman University High School was the best the staffs before they changed it was a good time back in August 2019. They cared they were on track no problems But in my senior year in the 2022-2023 school year all hell breaks loose. When they changed the main office staffs no no no bad idea I really missed The old Main office staffs. Cause students been fooling around pulling the fire alarm for 5 days and the security is not doing crap about it. Vaping in the BATHROOM ??? YES SMOKING WEED IN THE BATHROOM. DOING STUPID CRAP IN THE BATHROOM NOT EVEN MATURE ESPECIALLY THE Main Building boys bathroom there should be more security guards over there. It was unbelievable. Everytime when I went to the bathroom I don't feel safe I get scared. After graduation I said that I wished they bring more Security cause this school went good to worst. read more

Honestly, I attended Uni and graduated in 2014. I came back simply to volunteer and help out and obviously, not every adult is perfect but the individuals are leaving out the absolutely exceptional teachers and adults who keep kids out of trouble and teach them that they are in fact were worthy and have so much to offer the world. You want to really know why kids get bullied? Look at their home environments. I worked with some amazing students recently and then there were others. Those kids that are doing the bullying and acting out are the problem, and you can trace their shockingly poor behavior back to their parents who show they don't know how to act right either. Kids often times mimic their parents, those who raise them and their home environments (whether they intend to or not). A lot of these parents are complaining about the school but during the pandemic we're begging for schools to open back up because they don't know how to parent their own kids - then they turn around and blame the teachers who are not only teaching but also having to parent 250-300 students a year. In this era, I see a lot of parents not taking responsibility for the way their children turn out and that probably because they realized during the pandemic that they don't like their own kids. Y'all get mad but don't support the teachers who are working their tails off to support YOUR kids. read more

In all honesty, this school is a great school. Yes there are some inconveniences like some of the restrooms being closed during the school day, but beside that this school falls on the better end of the scale. Its campus is well taken care of and is home to many animals. Also the education system is exceptional. Most of teachers at this school are amazing and there are a lot of programs which help students propel forward. There are many sports to tryout for and many clubs to join. read more

Wowwwww ! We were wrong! Don't let them 5 stars fool you ! It's all a lie , whoever is posting must be staff or the people that donate to school. Staff do not care for students . I get it students can be so rude , and hard heads. They are teenagers thinking they are tough and all. But let's not talk about the staff ! When teachers are called out when they are wrong they find it offensive, disrespected and rude. Coach Ackerman , Basketball coach . We submitted all the paperwork for try outs . Followed all the rules. Had to do it again , and we send them again. Showed proof of sent email When asked to show email on his found, typed it and it proof he didn't open the email. He sure felt dum So when it was time for the actual try out for one of my kid. Sure did not give my kid a chance Because he was upset , he was called out . However, that wasn't all . We tried signing up for other sport. Guess who was the coach in that try out? Aside with other coaches? COACH STEVEN ACKERMAN Ok , let's not try sport ...let's go to a leadership Guess who's in charge of the leadership program Coach Steven Ackerman He can years of working place , win championships But need to humble himself! He couldn't accept he was wrong and now is impeding my kids to get into sport or program. You may ask yourself , how do I know he is the reason ? He was at volleyball try outs , once he saw my kid, talked to the coach . One remark he said "we do not like student that question or talk back & we don't want any parent coming to complain to us you didn't make it to the team" I hope more people come on here and speak on this because I guarantee you I know I'm not the only parent . read more

I am sure things have changed since i attended University High School over 32 years ago in 1991. I grew up in Baldwin Hills area of Los Angeles. Probably about 15 or 20 miles from Uni High School In West Los Angeles. My mom did not want us going to the schools in the area because of the gang violence. University High School is one of the best schools for sports, many different clubs you can join. They have nice tennis courts. School awefully big in space. Parking structure has changed since i first last seen it lol. When i went to Uni there were not that many school fights and bullying. School is in one of the best neighborhoods of Los Angeles. It is in a rich community of Westwood. Violence and crime come from students coming from the bad areas of Los Angeles. We would go out for lunch with the few restaurants nearby at that time. I had some of the best teachers help me get through my classes. I can only hope the school continues to do better whomever is running it. read more

There's a beautiful campus and very centrally located in West Los Angeles. It is a very old campus with lots of beauty. Unfortunately with all the issues of LA USD it is hard to tell whether University High School would be a good school for your child. The school has a lot of history and opportunities. read more

Uni is honestly a really good school. I can personally say that Uni is unique due to the amount of opportunities they offer their students. Some examples include: -About 20 AP classes to choose from -AP Capstone (an incredibly unique AP that allows students to develop research skills that will help them on the long run) -UCLA tutoring program -West LA classes -Peer Mediation (Only school with this program on the westside) -UTA Mentoring Program for Juniors - Sports - Variety of Electives ( Journalism, Leadership, Animation, Nano technology, Sports Medicine etc...) Also, Ms. Vannorden is one the best college counselors one can have. She always provides support for students/parents, and despite the amount of workload she already has, she will always help and answer any questions. Going to University High School has been one of the best decisions I have made. My friends from other schools envy the amount of opportunities I am offered at this school. I went to this school skipped a grade cause it was so bad. Got mugged my first month. Only way to pass a class cause teachers were being abused and harassed by students was to cheat. Nobody taught anything super jaded teachers. Baseball team was a joke, did some of my first drugs on the way to games. Fights happened daily. I got laughed at for saying I had a diploma from there when asked by colleges and some jobs. No surprise I ended up in jail, this school deff showed me the ropes. Class of 06 read more

Sure I attended here but I think this HS is pretty good. If i had kids and wasn't sending them somewhere private or charter they would probably attend UNI. One of the best HS in LAUSD on the westside imo. I love this school. Principal Davidson does a terrific job of running it. His AP teachers are awesome. Kudos for selecting them and keeping them. The number and quality of programs is amazing. If you want to succeed at Uni, Uni will help you. My kid, now a senior, has loved his experience there and has availed himself of every opportunity this fine school offers. He is well prepared to get into any college he wants to go to. The college placement office is knowledgeable and friendly and has given us valuable advice. Uni, with a high school budget and underpaid teachers is a gem on the Westside. The student government is very active and opportunities abound for those students whose eyes are open and are motivated to excel. The newly built gym has a state of the art basketball facility, weight room and lockers. The football field is brand new and pristine. The recently added tennis courts are clean and modern. The YMCA is due to open its new facility on the southwest corner of the campus in the near future. This will add a tremendous facility to the school, along with athletic opportunities to the students. High school is what you make of it. Some Uni kids go to Ivy League schools. Some complain about what they think should have been done for them. If you don't succeed at Uni, you cannot blame the school or its offerings. As I noticed that Uni doesn't have any new updates and as well that I just graduated from here! ID like to say that uni has its pros and cons. Everything that everyone had said is somewhat true about the staff, but ID like to defend uni since it's the students that get in the way of the teachers way (the majority). Wherever you decide to send your child, always keep in the back of your mind that at every school there's going to be those teachers who don't really care about teaching and are there for the money. I had one teacher who didn't really teach us but the rest were the best! ID recommend the magnet program since I was in it all 4 years, there's so many benefits here at uni. From the whole online school learning the teachers did such an outstanding job to at least help the students learn something. Before COVID I would say that they needed a huge change on the way how the bathrooms in the classroom building where looking like but of course that has changed. Depending on what program you put your child in will determine their outcome. Yes the regular program is amazing but from what I've noticed is there's a huge issues with that program with the students. I usually see lots of students wasting time since they disrespect the teacher to the point where they have control over the teacher, but the magnet program was the best for me. A lot of the magnet class of 2021 earned a lot of awards. Being in magnet doesn't mean you get the best of the best teachers but the environment that you're in especially if you're in honors as well is so much more calmer and peaceful. I just want to clear the air of all those bad reviews on uni. Lastly, uni is just a building. It's the people in it that defines uni. Omg good old uni...... I loved this high school for the dynamic people from all cultures, races and backgrounds but I must say teachers and faculty treat the kids as if they are a day care rather than making sure each one of them gets involved in something positive . I chose this school because I was an idiot I had the option to attend anywhere I wanted when I moved it here and I chose it because it was featured in many Disney movies haha .... Yes the campus is beyond beautiful but if you actually want to move up and learn and do some good you would attend a much more educated focused high school. read more

I came here (02-06) and let me tell you it has a wide variety of races attending, much were very talented amongst my years there. Some teachers are great like Ms. Nichols (retired I believe, year of '06) Mrs. Damon my dance teacher now a P.E. teacher and Ms. Schaefer who is a great English teacher. I like this school's art, drama, dance and sports departments because the teacher's dedication. Other than that this school experiments with new schedules, school routines and rules. I remember when they were testing out the truant ticket rule where if you're tardy three times you'd get a truancy ticket. Unknowingly I got a ticket not knowing I had three tardies. read more

Uni is an anti-bullying school. In my times from 2008-2012 (I'm glad I never transferred to another high school), I never realized I had the necessities to ask for help cause I was not open minded. But except for going to the school psychologist. Just at times I wasn't specific because I didn't want to share too much. Good or bad that happened to me at Uni, I don't regret attending the school. Even tho, of course there were days that filming from the film industry being there, I had to step in near their objects if it was possible for me to get through my classes on time. Uni being filmed never bothered me (that was the perks of going there). At Uni, (some are still there from my times) has very good teachers that treated every student with respect. I still believe that as an alumni who don't know new teachers there but respects every students attending the school. Uni is once (for 4 years of my life) of a life experience. University is a great school if you want your child in a diverse school. There are also different choices of sports and clubs you can be involved with. I went to Uni in 1977 to 1979, I had a white TR6 and used to walk around campus with 2 IPS girls under my arms, turns out the guys running IPS were early Scientologists, I recall going to a cabin in Laurel Canyon were they played You are so beautiful to me and we had to sit across from someone we did not know and look into their eyes as the song played. The headmaster was the brother of Billy D Williams, My buddy had a headache and he hypnotized my buddy out of the headache, he asked him imagine its color, then he said imagine you have an eyedropper and are filling it up, how many drops does it take? Then he asked the color again and then how many drops to fill it, it went on and got smaller and darker and vanished, I saw it. It was exceptionally hard to resist the temptation to ditch school with the ocean right there, the guy from the WORMS went to IPS , I never knew him. I had the world by the tail and was living in the 90210, I had no idea how good life was. read more

Classes are great here, upgraded from Warriors to Bobcats? (The whole Indian thing is out of hand to tell you the truth). Teachers were genuine and had fond memories there. I feel that Uni has well prepared me to go far in my academic career and to continue on to post-secondary schooling. The college center and counselors are very knowledgeable about the college acceptance process. They have effectively improved my chances of getting into a good school through there guidance. University High has academic programs that are unique to UNI such as the AP Capstone program. Only offered in two LAUSD schools, The AP Capstone is a College Board program that equips students with the independent research, collaborative teamwork, and communication skills that are increasingly valued by colleges. AP Capstone is comprised of two AP courses -- AP Seminar and AP Research-- and is designed to complement and enhance the discipline-specific study in other AP courses. It cultivates curious, independent, and collaborative scholars and prepares them to make logical evidence-based decisions. This course challenges students to think critically, while also strengthening their research skills. Uni was a very diverse school. However, that has changed. The school is mostly minorities now and is not very impressive. My daughter is a senior and the counselor is encouraging students to shoot for the lowest flag on the pole. Telling them to sign up for welfare as soon as they graduate and to attend community colleges. Paula should be encouraging them to be the greatest they can be and shoot for the stars. I will not be encouraging my friends and colleagues to send their children there any more. The few that I have referred noticed a change in their teens behavior and grades within the first 6 months of attending this school.Good luck with your decision.... This is my son's last year and they've left his picture out of the yearbook. The yearbook is given out 2 days before graduation, Wow! They give graduation tickets out the day before graduation, so you have to drive all over the city to pass tickets out to relatives on that night. Whose bright idea was that! This school has bad coordination problems, I would not recommend it. read more

The community at this school is just amazing. Teachers sincerely care about students and their grades in classes and all students get along very well. Uni has a lot of things to offer it's students. For one, it offers the AP Captsone Program which only one other school in LAUSD has. Uni also has connections with West LA College and students can take online and after school classes to meet graduation requirements. read more

University High School is a very diverse school and offers courses that many schools do not typically offer. For example, this year University High has introduced AP Capstone into its curriculum. After taking AP seminar, a branch of AP Capstone, I was able to write essays with 15,000 words without an issue, and, the course has taught me very important time management skills that I have acquired through the course. read more

University high school is a great school, all of the teachers are great and are willing to help you if you ever need it. The sports at uni are very competitive and all of the coaches really care about their teams. I joined the volleyball team and I didn't know anything about volleyball or many people on the team, but they all made me feel comfortable being new and I have improved a lot over this past year. read more

Coming from a low-income city, my mom enrolled me into University Senior High School in hopes that I would get all the resources I needed to be college ready. This school has done exactly that. Not only are there plentiful classes and resources to excel, this school is extremely welcoming. From Mental Health Awareness to Bullying Awareness, staff members never fail to make students well aware and appreciative of attending a school that acknowledges issues and takes actions to avoid them. As a student who plans to attend a four-year university, Uni High provides a wide range of academic classes, that other high schools do not (e.g AP Seminar, AP Research, Honors Advanced Math). The amount of academic support is also one of the many things I love about this school. In times of school crisis or in need of advice, there are counselors readily there to help. There is a college center that is extremely resourceful. This place has allowed me to grow as an individual through my communication skills and learning to spread kindness to all. Not to mention, the big role sports play here at Uni. The boys Varsity Soccer team made the 2018 Division IV championship and won second place! Daisone Hughes was named Player of the Year (2018) in Los Angeles CIF Division I. University High School is well represented in all of our sports. Along with the new beautiful football and track field, Uni is always hosting Track Events. All around, University High School is extremely well rounded; from mental assistance to academic support to athletic achievements, this place is truly welcoming. read more

This is my third year at Uni and what has been most memorable (so far!) has been the bonds I've formed with my peers and teachers. The school is so diverse in so many ways and offers so many ways to learn and grow socially as well as academically. The friendships I've made as a result of attending Uni are strong enough to transcend lifetimes. The relationships I've built with the staff and the lessons I've learned from my teachers will not be forgotten. I was afraid to be the odd one out for being gay but Uni High is so diverse and loving. I am actually president of the school's Gay Straight Alliance club. There's always different opportunities at Uni. For example, there are West LA college classes available for free after school along with chances to get into UCLA's research psychology study class. The counselors are also amazing and do their best to build your transcipt. Another great thing about Uni is that it has many AP classes such as AP Capstone which is very new and a great opportunity for students. The teachers are so involved in the students life and genuinely care. They want the best for us and help us grow as people. There's also programs such as Star 17 and adult school classes to help raise your GPA. I have just been accepted to a program, offered by the school ,called Peer Mediation. It is a great opportunity to learn communication skills and to use them to help spread kindness and peace throughout the campus. Along with that, the campus is very beautiful. The school is huge and has a new football/track field. The school does their best to provide activities to make sure EVERYONE feels included. read more

Many of the classes are very challenging, but in the good way. This is how the teachers show that they care for their students and that they want the best for their students. The curriculums are tough but the teachers try their hardest to teach every student to the best of their ability. There is also some beautiful scenery, such as the garden by the east gym, the newly renovated baseball field, and the football field. The only bad thing about this school are the bathrooms. I can tell that the janitors try their best, but some students just do not care for toilet paper and soap. University High School is, overall, one of the best locations to send any high school student. Especially in a public school system that is often at the whims of a group of highly politicized and often unaware administrators, the combination of active and involved staff, committed coaching staff, and a litany of extracurricular and after school programs is a gem in the rough. With top ranking ranking volleyball and basketball programs, as well as soccer teams coached by semi-pro and pro players, the sports programs are well fit for both new players looking to get into a sport to returners looking to expand their ability. Dozens of AP, Honors, and college courses, as well as sponsors and partnerships with colleges like UCLA and SMC, there is little lacking from an educational perspective. Classes like AP Capstone or the Advanced Math program are standouts, being impossible to find at nearly any other high school in not only LA, but in all of California, round out graduation level transcripts. And other programs, like the acclaimed theater program or dance clubs, provide an outlet for any interest in any students. And speaking of clubs, student activity is a major part of the school culture.
