It's a little odd to put out a review on a church; it's not a business after-all, but here goes…read more.. (and my sincere apologies if I offend anybody with alternate religious beliefs). I attended service today for the third time and I was absolutely moved my Pastor Paul's discussion about the Transfiguration of Jesus; and the music was really special and moving and impactful in its own way. I put this review out here because I am not very "religious" and I personally moved away from the church for many years, but now I have found something that is approachable, not dogmatic, and really makes me think about how I can be a better person for my family, my community, and myself. If anybody is in a similar situation, I highly recommend stopping by for a Sunday service. You might find, as I did, that's it's an absolutely refreshing, insightful, and moving experience.

The end result is, what I believe, an example of how people can serve a need contextually without losing substance. I suppose coming from a lay person, that should be taken with a grain of salt. But, I've been to mission starts that are awkward, full of random drum solos followed by the blood and body (communion) being randomly passed out and then literally thrown back down on the table. No lie. Moving on... COTA has a coffee hour before the service where people mingle and have some great coffee (each cup is brewed by hand) or chai (a secret recipe of a member) along with treats -- they have a suggested donation if you're able. ....Oh, the coffee and tea alone was worth the trip.... If you want some great drinks at 4:30 pm on Sundays, head down that way- totally worth it even if you don't stay for worship. COTA is housed in an arts facility so there aren't pews involved. Instead, they have folding chairs that aren't uncomfortable as I anticipated. If you have a sensitive bum, there are some couches in the back. The whole service had various members participating, it was a well curated event. Although they didn't have bulletins, I didn't feel lost or overwhelmed since people around me were watching and participating. I could follow their lead. During a time called 'open space' we ventured around the room and outside to participate in various activities that were focused Pentecost. Since there were so many options, some activities/prayers/readings hit home. I enjoyed this time to explore the space (I added pictures to the review) and to once again prepare myself for worship. Since I like to talk about customer service, I'll say that we were greeted and directed as soon as we walked in for coffee hour and by several people in various church capacities once we went upstairs for worship. Great service, great people, working together. It was not only a relaxed experience, but one I hope to repeat very soon.

The sermon was a call to meet the challenges of the world today with love and community. There are active children, young adult and older adult groups. The church is vibrant - a community that welcomes all. I hope, if Unitarian Universalism sounds like a faith community that might fit your needs, you will check out the website and visit a couple Sundays.

Every UU church is unique and reflects the congregational needs. This congregation has a majority of members with advanced degrees. Not all UU churches are like this. I hate leaving a bad review for a church but feel it is important to share. This church is full of…read morecliques and social groups. It seems like a welcoming environment at first until you realize how close these cliques are and hard it is to actually be welcomed equally in them. The leadership style is one that is do what I say and do not question it. If you do not agree with something they do (move to a new building and time) the pastors answer to the congregation is pray about it until you accept it. Recently a very sexist post was sent out where it implied a women should serve a man while watching tv in a bikini and the response when it was brought out was they did not even notice what the image was they posted on social media and in church newsletters. They are constantly asking for money as the church lost external funding support and even with the very small church size they have two pastors on staff and close friends employed. It is very disappointing seeing how this church uses money for salaries and how much everyone involved in the church is really just part of a very close clique of friends. Be careful if you consider this church- I fully believe it is all about income for the leadership and hanging out with their friends. The pastor has also asked regular attendees to RSVP yes to Facebook events even if they 100% know they can't attend to generate more buzz and hopefully get others to attend- how is a request like this for others to intentionally lie and mislead others to attend a church event ever OK? - well it's the culture of Sideris. Although I appreciate the pastors reply keep in mind attendees were also send specific instructions on to search for the church on google and how long to spend on the site to increase the keyword results- this is search engine manipulation yet the pastor asks his church to do this- including false RSVPs on Facebook and a don't question my decision environment but give me more money tactics..... You have been warned.
