I like the stores and good eats in this neighbourhood. I've always felt comfortable visiting universities and checking out campuses. It's no different here. I had a friend who got his master and doctorate degrees from this university, so I got to hear about his experiences when we both lived in Minnesota. I am a hockey fan. The UMN has a decent hockey program, both men's and women's. You often see local talent make it to the Minnesota Wild and Minnesota Frost rosters, respectively. Alex Goligoski, who recently retired from the NHL, played for the Minnesota Golden Gophers at UMN before he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He won the Stanley Cup with this team, but spent his last three years with the Wild as a defenseman. During his 1,000th NHL game, he scored the game-winning goal, which was quite the storybook ending. As of late, Brock Faber is a solid defenseman on the Wild. He is starting his second full season with the team and was captain of the Minnesota Golden Gophers. He is young, but exceptionally skilled and mature beyond his years. Taylor Heise, who is a forward for the PWHL's Minnesota Frost, played for the Minnesota women's hockey team. The Frost won the Walter Cup and she won the Ilana Kloss Playoff MVP award. If I were looking into academics, UMN has both computer science and mathematics departments that would have appealed to me. It is similar to York University in that you can choose to do either a Bachelor of Arts or Science in either field. Only a Master of Science is available in both. You can also study towards a PhD in either domain. UMN has a Bachelor of Science in Technical Writing and Communication. Many universities start off offering Technical Writing degrees as an Arts degree. I like the shift with universities going with a Bachelor of Science. Technical writers are needed more than ever to explain technical, complex details as clearly and concisely in engineering, medical, and more. It's makes more sense that it's a Science degree. This university does not offer graduate degrees in Technical Writing. It's one reason why I didn't do my Master's here. I don't have any inclination to get a doctorate. If UMN offered one in my chosen field, I'd consider it if the price is affordable and I could do it remotely. It was nice being back in the area. (394)

For an adult learner, they offer the "Augsburg for Adults" or AFA program. This program recognizes the needs of a busy adult with a full time job and a family and still allows you to complete a traditional 4 year bachelor's degree, at a real accredited college. Signing up as an adult, you are allowed to transfer in a lot of the credits you may have done at a prior college. If you started but never finished, or did a 2 year at a community college, or even a little bit of trade school (or for-profit schooling) you will have some of your credits transfer. Classes are offered every other weekend, in 4 hour long sessions. So the classroom time equals out to be the exact same as a regular daytime student in a traditional program.... you are just condensing it into bigger blocks, so you don't have to show up as often. Having class only twice a month works well for me as an adult. The cost is reasonable for a private college - though much higher than a community college. A traditional 4 credit class at Augsburg in the AFA program is around $1,700. They work with your employer if you have tuition reimbursement available. Also, this isn't really well known, but there is a regional student loan program out of North Dakota called the DEAL loan. This is probably one of the best private loans available out there. Luckily Minnesota students are eligible (only3 or 4 states are eligible). Look into that and into federal stafford loans if you need some financing. The instructors have generally been top notch professors, although I have had a couple stinkers. One was a tenured professor who was absolutely full of himself, and one was a grad student who was trying to make some money as a part time instructor. Both were terrible. Otherwise though I've been very pleased with the teaching talent at Augsburg. If you're an adult learner, I find that the AFA program is a really good fit and there is a lot of support for adult learners. The staff in this program are very supportive in making you feel like you get the whole college experience yet also have your unique needs as an adult student taken care of. It's been a great experience for me. I've got less than a year left to graduation with two degrees!

I was here to visit on Open House day as my prospective student considers their higher education options for next year. In-state and reciprocity state tuition costs are a great value and even out of state tuition is worth it when you compare it to places like the University of California out of state tuition costs. In addition to being located in Minneapolis proper with downtown venues and amenities, Minnesota is home to many Fortune 500 companies (think 3M, Target, General Mills, Medtronic, United Health, etc.) and this is their prime recruiting real estate when looking for new talent. I learned that many employees from these corporations are adjunct professors and teach here so the students learn from true experts and not theoretical academicians that have never held a real job. (Have you ever heard the saying, "Those that can't do, teach"? LOL) The buildings and classrooms are modern and techno-savvy. There are great study lounges and coffee shops within easy reach. One other thing I learned about the undergrad program is that there is an international study requirement (meaning every student MUST go overseas at some point for study in order to graduate). International Requirement? Yes please. Let see, if my student chooses to go here, they will be surrounded by the latest and greatest teachers, technology, comforts AND get to go overseas? Where the hell do I sign up?!? I'd like to take their place! When I went to school, there were nuns with rulers, cinderblock buildings, chalkboards, overhead transparencies and cafeteria slop. I'm now envisioning my student reading about hedge funds while sipping espresso in Italy on my dime! For God's sake, I want to come back in another life! In all seriousness, the U of M is a stellar university and the Carlson School within it is a prized gem that MN should be very proud of.

After years of bedside nursing, I knew I wanted to transition into a new, deeply fulfilling role where I could continue to make a meaningful impact in healthcare while stepping away from the physical demands of the floor. Walden University stood out because of its clear commitment to social change and its robust online learning platform. I chose my program because the curriculum aligned perfectly with these professional goals, promising not just a degree, but the practical skills needed to transition smoothly and make an immediate impact. During my time at Walden, there was a pivotal moment where everything clicked. I took a course that challenged me to apply theoretical concepts directly to everyday challenges. Dr. Robin was incredibly supportive, offering detailed, constructive feedback and encouraging me to push past my comfort zone. That guidance didn't just help me pass the class; it completely shifted how I approach problem-solving in my daily work. Earning this degree has been an absolute game-changer. It has opened doors to new professional opportunities beyond bedside care and given me a seat at the table where key healthcare decisions are made. More importantly, the knowledge and perspective I gained at Walden have directly translated into better support and outcomes for the community and the people I serve every day. If you are standing on the edge, wondering whether to leap, just do it. Balancing school with life isn't always easy, but the support system at Walden and the personal growth you will experience make every bit of effort worth it. Investing in yourself and your next chapter is the best decision you can make.
