I always loved standing underneath the waterfall and having the weight of the water get a little shiatsu massage my shoulders and head, and the massage jets in the hot tub also do a number on aching muscles (although all the jets are positioned in exactly the same spot so it's hard to massage anything other than your exact mid) back. The locker rooms are lovely as well (it's an especially nice touch to have a swimsuit dryer so you don't have to carry a drippy suit back to your room or house), and it's always nice to treat yourself to a sauna after your workout. It doesn't take long for the sauna to heat up, and I recommend turning it on before you swim so that it's hot and ready afterwards. The pipes in the shower area could use a major overhaul though. It sounds like a massive road construction project is going on right above your head when you're in the shower. Also, there is zero suds factor on the shampoo in the dispensers and even after rewashing several times and using tons of pumps of the stuff my hair didn't feel clean afterwards. I was staying at the hotel this week for a conference -- when I went back to the pool on day three In brought my own shampoo with me.

Sounds like a great spot right? Right! Unassuming from the outside, it was all business and professional courtesy once you entered through the gates. Here's the thing with aquatic centers. Lifeguards are paramount! We can all imagine a scenario when security and lifeguards are lacking, so to see it in action was incredibly impressive. On the day we went - near the end of our stay, we witnessed an episode where all the whistles blew, lifeguards stood up at their stations and pointed to the spot where someone was struggling in the water. In a matter of seconds, lifeguards converged and basically took care of business. Now these are late teens to early twenty-something kids. And to see this type of urgency, and trained behavior for the safety and security of their patrons was, well - encouraging to say the least. Once we got home it was decided that, based on our first experience, this won't be our last trip to the East Lansing Family Aquatic Center. Well done staff! You came through with stars!

They have a fun inflatable course that bigger kids or adults can go on, but my only complaint is that room and water in that pool is collllld! There are benches build into the pool so parents can sit in the warm water while kiddos splash and play around.

There's a lap pool, and if this is your thing, check the times for lap swims. Sometimes it is crowded and you have to share a lane, and sometimes it isn't. Find your time! There is a play area that is wonderful - separate from the large pool. It has a slide for littles, a gradual walk in with splash fountains, and then you round the corner and can walk in a waist-deep pool (or do very short laps) - there can be a basketball hoop there. There's also a sort of lazy river with benches that you can walk around. This, too, has open hours that you can pay a small fee to use. The Aquatic Center is a fantastic community resource!

Super bummed that they are moving the team to the new event center that is going to be built in downtown Kzoo. If you haven't made it to a game at Lawson, I definitely recommend it before the team moves. Tickets are fairly cheap. I believe we paid $22 and were in the bleachers behind the net, 4th row. WMU is a consistently ranked team in the top 25 nationally. They are so entertaining to watch! You can even buy beer and alcohol at the games now! For little ones needing some help they have some walker style push things to use. It was the first time for both my kids and they a actually did better just holding my hand. Half way through they clear the ice to run the Zamboni, only took about ten minutes and they skating was back on. This means that there are three bridges over the creek and they're beyond lovely. Picnic tables and a pavilion (though it needs some sweeping) that has electricity and water fountains and a playground nearby. There are other playgrounds in the park, connected by walking trails. The bridge nearest the entry and parking lot on East Kilgore was my favorite. A paved path from the parking lot, through the pavilion and over the bridge means that this beauty is also available for folks who are mobility challenged. There is a second entrance at Milham Park Road with another bridge and from there, a view of the neighboring golf course. Love, love, love Milham Park. Well done, Kalamazoo. I used to love climbing the big pines along the water's edge, all the way to the top, back when I was a young adventure-lover. I'm an old adventure-lover now and I weigh more, so it's been a long time since I've done that. There's plenty of space to walk around here along lots of little streams, there's a small but pretty dam, lots of picnic spots. Milham Park is about equidistant from my house and my husband's work so we meet up there for lunch pretty regularly and watch kids feed the birds. Please be aware of what is and isn't safe for birds to eat and do not bring them bread! There's lots of covered picnic areas and BBQ stations, so it would be a great spot for a work or family get-together, a nice playground area for kids. On my last visit a hula hooper was doing all sorts of awesome tricks and we had the best time watching her. It's kind of the bee's knees, actually.
