What to do when you see the Check Engine Light on the dash board 1. Drive to Auto Zone to have them get a read out from OnBoard Computer. This is FREE Service. 2. Get the code and print out. 3. I learnt that if codes are between P0171-P0175 they are related to fuel mixture. 4. I could be a simple reason of a loose gas cap. First check if the gas tank cap is screwed in tight per mfgr's specs. If not, tighten it accordingly. 5. If the Check Engine light stays on it could be as a result of a malfunctioning/direct MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow) caused by dust particles suspended to the sensors from a dirty air filter or an oil based air filter (K & N brand) or it could be due to a leak in the vacuum system. In my case despite tightening the gas cap, cleaning and changing the MAF sensor and replacing the air filter the light continued to be on even after driving the car for some 50+ miles to allow the computer to re-calibrate. I took it to the Toyota dealer but the Senior Mechanic had gone for the day and their diagnostics was quoted at $90. The next day I drove it to a mechanic who I used in the past, Robert Ramlal, Upland Car Pros. He connected his OBC reader and got the same code P0171 (Fuel mixture lean) He opened the hood and visually inspected for air/vacuum leaks. He got his flashlight and shone it behind the engine and put his hand in to retrieve a plastic piece which apparently had come off loose from a vacuum hose. He refitted it and reset the codes. TADA!!! the problem was solved! He is one great mechanic and has always been. I just wanted to share my experience and learning so that it may be useful to someone of you sometime. Another mechanic advised me that the codes are generic and could mean a lot. He asked me to take it to PepBoys or Firestone. I checked the two near my house and both had abysmal ratings on Yelp. I am glad I did not take it there. Not sure if the dealer or another name brand mechanic shop would have done the same thing that Ramlal did all for a score of dollars. I just moved to Texas and was looking for an honest shop that didn't charge me for anything I didn't need. Upland Car Pros was friendly, honest, and helpful! The prices were very fair for the pre-purchase inspections I got (way cheaper than other mechanic shops). I brought TWO cars here for a pre-purchase inspection. I started to bring my 2001 Toyota Corolla to Robert last year, 2015 from friend referral. I wished I had known this place long time ago. Talked to Robert and Ramon a week ago- I have a 2007 Lexus GS 350- as close to mint as you can get at that age of a car. I needed brake pads and rotors all around- these guys did a fantastic job - and had me totally done in under 4 hours/ machining the rotors is the time issue. Used OEM parts from westside Lexus- and I can't tell you what a great job they did. Deciding what and when to fix on an older higher mileage car is different than making repair decisions for a newer car under warranty and the dealers just don't get it.
