I love Upper Crust and usually make it a lunch destination when I go to downtown Chico. They are well known in Chico for their delicious, homemade treats and exquisite wedding cakes. The cases at the front are always loaded with said goodies, they're drool worthy! They offer an extensive variety of homemade treats including different quiches, salads, sandwiches, crustadas, soups, etc. The Thai peanut tofu salad is really good. I've loved everything I've had here including quiche, soups (Flavors rotate) and their pies! The berry pie is excellent, just the right tart and sweet balance. Whenever we've taken baked goods from here to friends or events, everyone has enjoyed them and inquired where they came from! Their baked goods are available for pre order for events and they specialize in wedding cakes. Several different cake flavors are available for you to choose including some unique and seasonal ones (Grand Marnier, French Rum Raspberry + many more). You can view the list online. Inside the store is an album of wedding cakes or they'll custom design one for you. UC is very busy, especially at lunch time but they do a good job of taking orders and getting everyone through. Prices are on point with other establishments in the area and reasonable for homemade products. The seating area has been expanded and accommodates many more than it used to. The layout of this place is a little odd - but eventually common sense sets in and you see the line forming in front of a pastry/cake display case. Everything looked Delicious and bad for you. My sister and I decided to split a sandwich. We ordered the Upper Crust Grilled Cheese with a side of fruit and broccoli slaw. The sandwich arrived and we were happy to have split one. It looked huge! There was turkey on it - we didn't see that on the menu but thought we over looked it. It was a good sandwich but a little too much rosemary in the aioli for my liking. The broccoli slaw was fresh and crisp and the fruit was melon-less so I LOVED it!. The price was a little high ($15 including two bottled waters) BUT it was fresh and a large portion. I love this place. I love their black bean chili the most. It's amazing! I really wish they made it year round. Also their cold Thai salad and deviled eggs are perfect for a snack or lunch. Prices - a bit for what you get...I got an iced cookie last week...it was dry, not much icing, and not particularly big. Go to the Cookie Shoppe on Mangrove for a much better cookie and better price! 2. Atmosphere - The previous yelper was right--tables are always dirty. 3. Attitude - The employees are usually nice...it's the owners who are always annoyed when they have to wait on you. 4. Cakes - they're okay, too. Upper Crust did our wedding cake in 2010. It's taken me forever to write this review, but I can say that the cake is as good now as it was then. How do I know? Because almost every time we go from the Bay Area to Chester, we detour through Chico JUST so we can stop and pick up a cake. We were married in Chester, a ninety+ minute drive from Chico. Here's my problem, the pastries are not consistent . I love croissants, willing to try the best or the worst but in the end I look for certain qualities such as flakiness, buttery feedback in my mouth and aroma that is associated with the right combination of ingredients. I've had very good presentations from this bakery and also some very poor presentations. I hit them up about every other time I am chico in the morning to try to get in on a fresh batch. The last two times, I was presented with flat, almost greasy to the touch croissants. Pairing this with the quiche was bland with a crust that was dull and flavorless. Not sure if they have different pastry chef throughout the week but I wish I knew who worked when and only patronize the establishment on those days hoping for that croissant that I expected. Updated: The owners have since contacted me on my review and I have revisited their facility and i will say subsequent visits have been met with much better outcomes. The food was good. MY son had the clam chowder which he inhaled. My wife the kale salad which she enjoyed. And I had the turkey melt (sandwich of the day). The enjoyment of the food was tempered however by the surly attitude of each staff member we encountered. It wasn't a case of a single employee wishing they were someplace else. They were all unfriendly. I mentioned this to my family on the way out and they quickly added they had noticed the same thing. When i was attending Chico State i was mildly obsessed with Upper Crust. ALL of their sandwiches are amazing, especially since all the bread is homemade. I worked at a cafe for years and refused to eat tuna, unless i made it. BUT once i tried Upper Crusts tuna melt i had to have it every time it was on the special board. My ultimate go to on a rainy day was the black bean chili. For breakfast they have have the best pastries! The monkey bread is excellent! i have a sweet tooth and trust me i have tried EVERY dessert they have and they are all amazing! Especially the frosted snicker doodles. I miss Upper Crust! read more

This place is delicious! It was only my 2nd time to Chico, so I had a friend pick where we went for lunch. I got a sandwich, which came with soup. I think the sandwich was called the california chicken? It was chicken breast on olive bread, sauteed onions, bell peppers, aioli, cheese & spinach.. all warmed up. For the soup I got their mushroom & it was amazing! I'll definitely go back next time I'm up there. They were also super friendly. Located in the heart of downtown Chico, Upper Crust Bakery is practically a Chico institution. After all, the outdoor patio offers shade, and the iced coffee-- a small respite from Chico's blazing summers. Normally, I'm the type of customer who reads a menu as intently as one may read the synopsis on the back of a novel. I treat ordering food as a major decision. Chocolate Chip or Peanut Butter? It's a "Choose Your Own Adventure" -- the outcome and enjoyment dependent on my selection. That being said, ordering at Upper Crust is an enormous undertaking. A wide selection of sweets and pastries beckon me from inside the glass cases -- Almond Croissants, Cream Cheese Brownies, Strawberry Triffles. Choosing one would be like choosing between my hypothetical children. Fortunately, any pastry choice I make at Upper Crust is a good one. Lunch items, on the other hand, have historically been hit or miss. On one visit the grilled cheese may be as it should -- hot, melty, and crisp. On another visit -- cold and tough. So much depends on the service during the rush at lunch time. Regardless, I chose my pastry experience over my lunch experience when planning my wedding. My new husband and I ordered a variety of cupcakes (including vegan chocolate!) and a small "couples cake" to enjoy at our wedding reception. And now for a one word review: Yum! We're looking forward to diving into the butter cream once again on our 1st anniversary....Or maybe, even before, on some hot summer day. read more

I've tried several things, but the standard order is still a California Vegetable Sandwich and a Chocolate Mousse brownie. Yeah, I'm stuck in a rut--but oh what a delicious rut it is. Everything about the sandwich is perfection--the toasty bread, the melty cheese, the grilled vegetables (even bellpeppers which are normally gross.) My only complaint? They don't serve made-to-order sandwiches after 2pm, or at all on Sundays. Why, no one knows. Perhaps they are so unholy fabulous, it would be a sin to serve them on the Sabbath. The Chocolate Mousse brownie is like an entire chocolate cake concentrated into a dense, moist little rectangle. If you give a mouse this brownie, he would most definitely need a glass of milk. Are all of their foods and pastries good? Yes. Is their coffee good? Not so much. If you need good coffee, stop at Naked Lounge around the corner, or Peet's across the street. Upper Crust is tasty fabulous, but it's not a tasty secret. There will be a wait. And you will have to make expectant eye contact with one of the hipster/bohemian employees if you want to be served. This is one of my hubby and my's favorite places to grab a sandwich. We always get the california veggie, because, well, why fix what isn't broken? We love it! It's always fresh, juicy, and oh so flavorful, why try anything else? With that being said, when it came time to choose a caterer for our wedding, there was no hesitation on our end to ask Upper Crust if they could cater a wedding. And guess what? There was no hesitation in accommodating us on their end! We were so delighted! I know that it's not a typical place to consider for wedding fare, but we didn't have a very typical wedding either.... we knew that a light, but filling dinner of sandwiches, potato salad, and fruit salad would be perfect for our Alice in Wonderland wedding - AND IT WAS! ALL OF OUR GUESTS were raving about the food! We started off with some yummy appetizers that Upper Crust made - little cucumber cutouts, and some spinach and feta poppyseed puff pastries (I forget the exact names, but who cares? They were yummy). Then for dinner we had a variety of sandwiches that everyone loveLoveLOVED - the favorites were the Tuscan Dream (vegetarian) and The Sicilian. The Yukon Gold potato salad was also a huge hit (so good that when I got home I ate all the leftovers), and the fruit salad was scrumptious as well. We also had our cake made by them, and it came out just how we wanted it. I forgot how great the cake was until my hubby shoved that first bite into my mouth after we cut it :) The best part about choosing to work with Upper Crust is how enthusiastic they were to work with us in making everything perfect. Eric was SO friendly, so sweet, and so ready to bend over backwards to exceed our expectations. They individually boxed the fruit and potato salads for us (and even let us take the boxes home to decorate, then bring back to them), cut the sandwiches in halves and arranged on platters, and arrived on time (actually, I think they were even a bit early)! Now, I know not many people will consider them for food for their wedding, but think of small events and luncheons! Even birthdays and such. I loved everything so much I'm already trying to find an excuse to get another catering box from them! Thanks again SO MUCH to the entire staff at Upper Crust that made this all possible for our special day - we are eternally grateful! The Upper Crust is AHMAZING! The service is great! The food is great! The art work is great! I really love this place! A great place to go for lunch or breakfast! They serve great soups, Black Bean Chilli is the best, and sandwiches during the day (8-2 I believe) and also have a bevy of sides and premade goods for purchase throughout the day. On a perfect day, I would go and get the Black Bean Chilli in a cup with a Monterey quiche on the side and a coffee and slice of pie for dessert. Yum, delicious, everything is good! Downgrading. Unimpressed with stale snickerdoodle cookies. I haven't really grimaced from eating a cookie from a bakery but Upper Crust did it. Flavor was lacking and nutmeg(?) was the only flavor profile I tasted. I also got an apple tart, which was a bit better. I had forgotten to ask them to heat it up so the tart crust was hard. Wow. I am in disbelief of the service I received today. Surprisingly, I had faculty, friends, and classmates rave about this business and the incredible service and product they had received at this establishment. Today, I noticed that I did not have a great experience, nor will I ever come back. As I waited in line to receive service on what pastry I wanted, I noticed there was reluctant behavior from the staff to serve or address me. Everyone before and after me were being addressed immediately, and I remained unnoticed and I began to feel self conscious. Is it due to the color of my skin (I am Mexican) or is it due to the reason that I am a man that is wearing fake nails? Whatever the reason is for me being ignored and treated indifferently, I urge other members of the LGBTQ community and people of color to stay away from this place called Upper Crust Bakery. I will never spend any more money at this establishment, and I hope others will not treated the way I am in the future.
