I attended an event at the space recently for Slow Food Brisbane and loved everything about it. As an event space, it sings! There's green walls surrounding you, book shelves full of inspiring cook books and freshly made bites direct from the kitchens. Plus, being a warehouse style shed it's a truly raw space to make of it what you will. Being located in South Brisbane it is easily accessible by public transport and there are some parks around the surrounding area for those of us who drive. Most of all I admire the owner, Angela's, ethos and determination. Wandering Cooks is a grand addition to our city and one I hope will continue to flourish.

I was surprised to be surrounded by open gardens and a couple of food trucks ago that seem to be pretty permanent. Sitting at the bar for a drink (Young Henry'a special), I was pulled in by their mini, warm chicken pastries. Chicken, eggs, cheese and pastry. I mean, whoever invented such a beautiful creation deserves all of the medals. The event I was attending was a marketing, panel style event and the space suited it to a tee. That being said, I had images of 50+ different events I could throw spinning through my mind as I practically licked the final pastry flecks off my plate. The opportunities for collaboration would be pretty much endless, plus their bar is pretty good. This is legitimately one of the most diverse and inclusive community based event spaces I've visited.

The title 'Light Space' suits this place well as it is one bright and funky looking place. 'Light Space' offers a refreshing change to this with its minimalist industrial chic design, high ceilings and modern architecture. Situated in the Valley (on the border of Newstead), it is also an easy location to get to. I came here for the UQ Architecture 2011 exhibition and was impressed at how fitting of a venue this place was for it. The space was divided in 2 large rooms, one loungy room with a wide bar and the other area was as the exhibition space. The white walls and bright lighting really worked well in showcasing the 80+ student works that were being presented. Overall, this was an ideal place to fit all student works plus accommodate to the 200-300 people that attended the event. The size of the bar is very wide, which is practical when serving a large group of people thirsty for some free booze. The decor and layout of 'Light Space' makes the place very versatile. I can imagine it would be a great place to host a wedding or large party. The high ceilings, white walls and amount of space would make this a great place to shoot audiovisual material in. If you have a medium-large sized function/exhibition/party to organise, or need a studio space for a photo shoot, you might want to look into hosting it at Light Space.

I was fortunate to experience the space in full swing over the weekend at Pinot Palooza, an event that brought together local wine makers, punters and food vendors. By virtue of seeing the pre-event organisation on the day I sense this is a tightly run ship and for personal events like weddings and such, this is what you want. There's plenty of scope to create the style and atmosphere you want in the area with two large hall-like spaces. There's office space above that is used by an ecclectic group of creative businesses including photographers, a media agency, architect and online fashion store. And as a little tid bit; there's also a bee hive on the roof by Bee One Third. Nifty huh?

Perched on the edge of St Lucia Golf Course, it overlooks the rolling greens with gorgeous sandstone terraces, fountains and a huge old building with loads of character. The wedding I attended began with a beautiful ceremony in a lush garden with rustic chairs and a red carpet. Photo opportunities abounded in the amazing setting and the ceremony was followed by champagne and canapes on the patio underneath a magnificent old fig tree lit with fairy lights. The official reception took place in the enormous function room with its own bar and dancefloor. The three course meal was incredible and the settings elegant. The whole day was just amazing and the bride and groom were completely happy with their perfect day. I loved it and would seriously consider Hillstone for my own wedding.

It was built in 1913 as the men's mess hall for the Dunwich Benevolent Asylum and was one of the few buildings that remained on the island after the asylum moved to Sandgate in 1946. It is a lovely old brick and timber building that can hold over 100 people and like most halls has kitchen facilities to help make your event easier to run. It's a proper old school hall, you need to bring in caterers etc, however it would be heaps easier to deal with in the rain than a marquee. There are dog obedience classes on Tuesday evenings and the Physical Culture Sports Club which teaches ballet, gymnastics, street and jazz on Thursday afternoons. In between all these regular activities, the two halls, pavilion and outdoor areas are open for private hire for functions and events. Stradbroke Island Events is the newest and most exciting business on the scene at Straddie…read more Weddings on the island are very popular; it makes sense, you fall in love with the island and you fall in love... it's a given, I think, that if you go there once you'll return to savour it's raw beauty, pristine surf beaches and fun times. I attended a beach wedding at Point Lookout recently and it was perfect; my cousin the bride sang the praises of Straddie Island Events as the day and evening went off without a hitch. It's no mean feat organising perfect weather, a beach pergola with flowing drapes, carved teak daybed for pics at the back of the beach under shadowy she-oaks etc. etc., followed by an oyster bar and drinks at the pub and magical co-ordinated decoration of the upstairs function room with the gorgeous ocean view. I guess you couldn't ask for anything more than for everything to run smoothly and look perfect on your big day. I was kidding about the weather - I know they couldn't really have ordered that.
