We were planning on going to another restaurant tonight but decided to stay closer to our hotel. So glad we did. The servers were ALL friendly and accommodating. The drinks were made with care and tasted fantastic. BUT the food. We had the saganaki and the Greek salad to share. Hubby has the grilled Salmon and commented that it was as a good as the Salmon in Scotland. I had the herbed chicken in Pita and it was scrumptious! Wanted to have desert as it looked great. My bar mate ate it all and claimed it was awesome. The only complaint was the bar stools need some padding after all that tasty food!
OMG, they served the best Lamb cutlets / lamb chops I ever had. The lamb cutlets were juicy, sous-vide tender, and still charred outside! The meat itself was fresh in flavor and flavorful. Not too gamey. My mouth was blessed with each bite. Gotta try Tasmanian lamb meat if you ever visit this island. The lambs went really well with the smashed eggplant side. Very buttery eggplants! We also had a tuna 'ceviche', and loved it. Good ratio of tuna vs greens, and very flavorful dressing and fresh tuna too! The server was also friendly and was knowledgeable about their menu items. read more

Despite plain name this very popular Greek Restaurant in Hobart provides exceptional food and service within a lively dining room. The menu offers many Greek specialties, well explained; it also encourages sharing. Much appreciated. Also nice cocktail and wine selection, including numerous local wines and beers. Imaginative dessert menu too. The Baklava was not only light but not sticky sweet and paired with pistachio gelato. Delicious and very shareable. And, wonder of wonders, the room's high ceiling sends the sound up and away, allowing conversation even in a full house! Outstanding choice. read more
Sad to write this review but feel like I must. It has been in the beginning of COVID that we have been to Urban Greek. For five years it was our go to spot for Greek in Hobart. It was our gold standard to compare Greek restaurants around the world. Sad to say it is no longer. We made reservations well in advance as we did on previous visits. We were sure that the restaurant would be slammed. It was not. There were at least four to five tables always empty during our entire dining experience. We ordered the Charcoaled Grilled Lamb Cutlets, the Greek Lamb, and the spicy feta dip - tirokafteri with pita. The Tirokafteri arrived and it was like nine ever seen before...and this was the place we fell in love with it in 2017. It had more liquid(olive oil) than other ingredients. It was more if the color of paprika than roasted Capsicum. The flavor was spicy enough, just different. The pita served with it was excellent. The lamb cutlets were very well done and our server said they would be medium...not so. The eggplants it was served in was ok. The Greek Lamb dish was really not prepared well at all. It was not attractive with glutinous fat being at least 50% more than actual meat. It was not edible. The charred fat in the cutlets was excellent. I ate as much of the meat that I could and just stopped. There were a few morsels of meat left amongst the glutinous fat that I just couldn't deal with. The lemon potatoes were lack luster and the whole dish needed seasoning. Total disappointment. Sad part was the waitress just looked at our plates and took them away. Never once fed she ask how everything was. Did we like it or anything. We waited for about seven minutes for our check then finally flagged her down and asked. We then waited again. Then told her we could go to the bar and pay. Other people paid at their tables. Just strange. The owner was behind the bar right next to us paying our check...still no 'how was your meal or anything'. Just down right bizarre or should I say sad. Can't recommend and will not go back. Sorry to lose a favorite restaurant on our list. Now I know why there were so many empty tables. Hopefully they will step up to their past read more

The only reason we decided to dine here is that they have gf pita bread. We are really excited about that but was terribly disappointed. Pita bread was almost not edible, too dry and hard. Shrimp with mango salad is also less than acceptable. read more

Enjoyed some wonderful & authentic Cretan Greek food while visiting Hobart. Easy to make reservations, offered either private table or community table. Nice walk from the Woolstore Hotel. Thank you for bringing back our delicious memories of our recent trip to Greece. read more
UG has been on my to-do list for ages. So long. Too long. Since like, before it opened. And I still haven't dined in. What is wrong with me? Why do I keep overlooking it!? I can write a review now though, because I've at least hung around for fifteen minutes or so while waiting for takeaway. Even then it wasn't my first thought, but the place we wanted to get gyros from was already closed on new years eve, so I fanged it down the road to UG to check out takeaway options. And was NOT let down. Omgosh. Two different vegetarian wraps to takeaway, and a side of chips... with oregano and cheese. YUM. A very very excellent final meal for 2017, and now I'm all the more excited to actually dine in now it's 2018 and I will not survive another year of avoidance. SEE YOU SOON, DINE-IN GREEK! read more

All around amazing! Great vibe and delicious food! Whole family, including 2 teens, really enjoyed!
Had the moussaka and salmon. The moussaka was yummy, but the salmon was a bit under-salted. Nice service - they even opened up early for us. Nice ambiance. It was good but not blow your brains good. read more

This place is flat out tasty. We came in around 8:30 after arriving into Hobart that evening from the East Coast. Hobart shuts down kind of early so we ended up pretty much shutting the place down. But back to the food. We did the banquet option, and very course was delicious. The dips with pita were all really good. We had a flight of beetroot, pea, and capsicum dips that came with 8 small pieces of pita. My only complaint is that there wasn't enough of the delicious pita. The appetizers consisted of a cheese croquette, fried dolma, and a zucchini (corgette) patty. I think the dolma probably would have been better without the frying. The cheese croquette was a little heavy, but the patty was pretty good. In the end, I think there was a little over-reliance on the deep fryer for this course. The main platter of meats was very good. Both the chicken and beef were well cooked and tasty. And we got some more of the yummy pita! The dessert of a custard in filo dough was good as well. I don't live filo dough, but I would definitely order this one again. Finally, the service was off the charts friendly. When we asked for details about one of the wines, they did some research on where we could order it, etc. The owner spent a lot of time talking with customers about Greece and his cooking. Really great. I would definitely return! read more

We visited after 8pm on a Monday night and couldn't believe how busy it still was. (Pro tip: make a booking!) The staff was incredibly accommodation in rearranging their reservations to find a table for us. Their menu is quite impressive and I wish I could have tried one of everything. Quality food and friendly service makes this the place for dinner. read more

Went here with friends and were not disappointed. The food was more 'westernised' than straight out Greek without losing the Greek style. The entree selection we chose was excellent followed by a wide selection of mains that were all well received. Wine selection was good and reasonably priced. To top our experience off, the service was really good. Would highly recommend. read more

Urban Greek is one of those restaurants that manages to encapsulate everything you want when dining out; Excellent food, attentive staff and the perfect atmosphere. It is on the pricey side but well worth it for the quality and freshness of the food. Something that has really come to my attention of late when eating at restaurants is the high volume of chatter, chair scraping, cutlery-on-plate noise, making it almost impossible to talk to others at your table. Though Urban Greek was packed when we went for dinner last night, it was still able to maintain a classy ambience with a low noise level- it really enhanced the overall experience. The food was absolutely heavenly. I wasn't a huge fan of the zucchini or cheese croquettes but I can imagine they would be delicious to others. The fish of the day (snapper) came whole and was tender and tasty. It came with a generous helping of fresh vegetables as well as a delicious olive oil marinade. The best part about ordering this dish is the little bowl of water and towelette provided so you can freshen up your hands when finished! The moussaka- one of the best I've ever had. I honestly can't say anything more about that. The deconstructed baklava was a true stroke of genius- every element of the dish was made with a lot of love- the pistachio ice cream being the star. I have never tried Mastika before but was enjoying the experience so much I thought I would indulge. It is said to aid digestion and it was extremely refreshing (once it had left the mouth) and would recommend trying this here. The popcorn espresso martini was also rather delicious and deserves a mention here. Our waitress was very attentive and we were never trying to wave someone down- we were very well attended to even though it was very busy. Overall, a fantastic experience and I would have returned if I lived in Hobart! read more

Finding a good Greek restaurant outside Greece can be tricky...well not with these guys. We've visited the place when in Hobart, and we cannot recommend enough this place for the quality of the food and the amazing service they offer. The food is great, fresh and comes in nice big portions. It was great to see that they have a big Greek wine list and of course their freddo cappuccino was nice and strong as it should be. Mairy, Despina and Savvas are doing an amazing job! read more

We ordered the meze platter, charcoal octopus, and grilled plate - all were excellent. The waitstaff were all exceptional - friendly, helpful and knew their stuff. We also had the baclava deconstructed for dessert. The pistachio gelato was unreal. Overall a superb dining experience - highly recommended. read more

Urban Greek - A Culinary Odyssey to the Heart of Greece! From the moment I walked through the doors of Urban Greek, I knew I was in for something extraordinary. The warm, inviting ambiance instantly transported me to a cozy taverna in the heart of Greece, where tradition meets modern flair. The Food: Simply put, the dishes at Urban Greek are a symphony of flavors. Each bite tells a story of passion, heritage, and meticulous craftsmanship. The Moussaka? It's a cloud of creamy béchamel atop layers of tender eggplant and perfectly seasoned meat. The Souvlaki? Grilled to perfection, juicy and bursting with authentic Greek spices. And don't even get me started on the Spanakopita--it's a flaky, golden slice of heaven! Every dish is a masterpiece, made with love and the finest ingredients. The Wine: Urban Greek boasts an impressive wine list, with selections that beautifully complement the rich flavors of the cuisine. Whether you're a connoisseur or just enjoy a good glass of wine, the knowledgeable staff will guide you to the perfect choice. Their recommendations never miss! The Service: Exceptional service is the cherry on top. The staff at Urban Greek make you feel like family. As a Hobart local, Urban Greek has become one of my go-to spots whenever I want a great meal and that warm, family-style hospitality. Every visit feels like stepping into a little piece of Greece right in the middle of the city. The food is always spot on -- fresh, generous, and full of flavour. The lamb cutlets are some of the best you'll find in Hobart, the charcoal octopus is perfectly cooked, and the dips with warm pita are a must every time. I've tried a big range of dishes and have never had a disappointing plate. What really makes Urban Greek stand out is the atmosphere. The staff are friendly, attentive, and genuinely care about making sure guests are looked after. It's lively without being overwhelming, and it's the kind of place where you feel comfortable bringing family, friends, or even clients. Great food, great service, and great value -- no wonder it's one of Hobart's most loved restaurants. Highly recommend booking ahead, especially on busy nights. Urban Greek never disappoints. read more
