I love visiting food halls, and Urban Hawker is no exception. There were plenty of seats, and you are expected to clean up after you're done with your food - Kueh Lapis, (4/5): such a fun dessert! I liked peeling the layers (though some didn't peel perfectly). It is mildly sweet and reminds of Filipino Biko - Stingray Fried Rice, (3.75/5): this was my first time having stingray and it's actually sooo tasty. the meat reminds of a sweet crab and flaky fish. though I was a fan of the stingray, the fried rice was just ok. Considering this came from a stall specializing in fried rice I subtracted some points - Ayam Gulai, (4.25/5): I didn't know quite what I was ordering, but I'm so glad I did! This stall makes their own chili sambal and it's sooo shrimpy, punchy and complex. It added a lot to the dish, with the curry chicken + slight hint of coconut flavors and the meaty paste on top of the rice. everything works pretty well together here - just the egg was a bit overcooked and the chicken was also just slight overdone. Loved this spot! I ended up coming here twice during my trip to NYC. The location is super convenient in Midtown, just steps from Rockefeller Center, and I was pleasantly surprised that we were able to get a table for three both times without much wait. The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable for Midtown Manhattan. Over the two visits, I tried both versions of the Hainanese chicken rice, and both were delicious. The food came out incredibly fast, and I especially appreciated that the meals included Chinese broccoli. I also tried the stir-fried noodles from Hainan Jones and the beef rendang from Padi D'NYC -- both were excellent. Overall, everything we ordered was flavorful, satisfying, and served quickly. Boyfriend and I stopped by Urban Hawker for lunch before our Broadway show, which was only located some minutes walking distance away. Urban Hawker isn't a restaurant, but a food hall with lots of Singaporean and Malaysian food vendors. This means lots of different options to choose from. :) We split a Hainanese chicken rice plate and an order of chicken and lamb skewers, both of which tasted very yummy. Interesting concept of a Singapore-inspired food hall in Midtown. Singapore is a truly a melting pot with strong representation from China, Malaysia, and India and the food reflects the diversity. Had a chance to try chicken rice, satay, and biryani. The chicken rice was one of the more decent versions I have had in the states, while the satay was probably the best dish. The biryani, however, fell flat. Prices seemed decent, and while the satay was pricey, it was very good. Urban Hawker is worth at least one visit. read more

This place has all the flavors that everyones loves and it gets very busy during the lunch hours as all the workers in the area come here good food. We went here for dinner after walking around the Rockefeller area. It was a Saturday where the weather was a little variable and a street fair going on so there wasn't too crowded. There are different stalls with one stall was all different types of fried rice. I don't know what it is about the fried rice but it was soo good! It was super flavorful and the chinese sausage was neither too salty or greasy. The Hainan chicken was also good with the chicken rice tasting well. There were so many things to pick from! If you're hankering for Asian cuisine but can't quite decide what exactly you want to have for dinner, then Urban Hawker is the place for you. It's a dining hall with fare from a variety of Asian cultures, from Filipino to Hainanese, Japanese to Malaysian. I visited with a group on a Friday evening. Since it was later at night there was plenty of seating (if you go during peak hours it can be hard to find a table). I ordered fried rice with fried pork chops from a vendor called "Mr Fried Rice". It was very good! My husband ordered Hainanese fish and chips from a different vendor, and it was honestly the best fish and chips I've ever had - and that's coming from someone who doesn't like fish! He also ordered a Singapore Sling from a bar called "The Sling Bar", and he also said it was good. I would definitely return to Urban Hawker if I were to be around this area. I heard about this Asian Singaporean inspired food hall in the middle of Midtown, so I was curious to try it out. I finally stopped by for dinner around 5-6pm. From my initial impression, I was honestly kind of underwhelmed. When I first entered, it seemed like a ghost town with so many of the tables empty like it had just opened minutes ago. Towards the later evening after 6:30-7pm, it started to get packed towards the back. This food hall consisted of several stalls mostly Singaporean & Indian cuisines - with some hint of Filipino, Chinese, Malaysian , etc. You order, find a table and pick up your food when it's ready. [Just note that some dishes come out in plastic containers as if you are taking it to-go even though you are dining in]. I opted for a Singaporean spot called Prawnaholic and opted for the #3 HOKKIEN MEE. Don't get me wrong, it was good. But I'm not sure that the dish was that good to equate the cost in terms of portion size or taste. Maybe if it was slightly cheaper, I could make sense of coming back, but otherwise, I think I would prefer buying other dishes elsewhere. Overall, I find that price are high (typical midtown prices for foods) for average tasting foods. I've been a staunch advocate for Urban Hawker, raving about it to co-workers and even insisting that people I've never met should check it out when visiting NYC. This fandom has generally worked well, introducing new people to outstanding cuisine in the middle of Chipotleland, but once took a dark turn when my evangelism was too stringent. But have I reviewed it on Yelp? My heart and my best intentions tell me I have, but the facts and evidence tell me I haven't. Smokin' Joe has a been standby, with a delightful curry sauce whether you get fish or chicken. In recent visits I've been trying Padi D'NYC. From the regular menu I've enjoyed lontong and beef rendang but if a nasi lemak special happens during your visit check it out. The most exotic option at Mr. Fried Rice is stingray fried rice. With a name like Prawnoholic, I've always gone for the crustacean side of things but tonight I learned that the Torched Sesame Pork Rib Noodles are great too, with a complex, spicy but not overpowering sauce. read more

I go here everytime I start reminiscing about my time in Singapore. Plenty of stalls that offer many different types of dishes, perfect for whatever mood you might be in. Super overpriced and overhyped imo. I got the chicken tiki masala from the Indian stand and it was soo bad like truly the worst Indian food I've had. First the color of the chicken and rice was so red it seemed artificial? And the chicken itself was so incredibly salty which made it hard to eat. 100% do not recommend. I also got the honey lemon sour plum from kopifellas and it was super mid and overpriced. Definitely wouldn't recommend or get again. I got the Nasi Lemak from Malaysian food for 20$ + tax, good but could be better, sadly it's not as warm as I would like it to be. Then my bf got Curry Chicken Cutlet rice I believe it's 19$+ Tax. Chicken was okay, a little dry but one food I won't recommend getting is the Curry Fries, so we assume (ik we shouldn't assume) that the curry is the thick type of curry, but it's so light almost has little to no tasted to it, got the fries for 6$ + tax, if your kids want fries, just get the regular. A Singaporean food hall in the heart of Midtown Manhattan is def a standout in the midst of the generic options in the area. The caveat however, is the price point. Understandable because of the area, but as someone who is from that part of the world, a but hard to swallow paying close to $20 USD for most of the entrees in this food hall. I've been here a number if times but mostly only frequent Lady Wong & Kopifellas. Haven't tried too many of the food vendors there until my most recent trip last month when my visiting cousin wanted to go. The vendors I tried and my reviews: Lady Wong - 5/5 must visit. I get the kuih which is like bites of nostalgia from my childhood. My favorite is the cassava, but all the other kuihs are good too. The angku was the only one that wasn't on par for me. Idk if they still make their sardine puffs, but it's delish! Kopifellas - 5/5 I always get either iced coffee or yuan yang. Just amazing. Pricey, yes. But not any pricier than Starbucks. Tried the kaya toast recently and wasn't a fan. Tasted nothing like the kaya toast I'm accustomed to. Prawnaholics - 4/5 Pretty good char kuow teoh. The pork lard bits are def a plus. Might be just a bit mush. Mr Fried Rice - 2.5/5 This was wildly disappointing. For a place that specializes in fried rice, I'm expecting your fried rice to be excellent. We got the stingray option. The fish was pretty good but the fried rice was abysmal. Completely bland and dry. Padi - 4/5 we got the lamb & chicken combo satay. Never had lamb satay before and it was absolutely phenomenal. Usually the chicken satay is always better but the lamb was def better. Absolutely loved it. Jakarta Munch - 4/5 I got a chicken noodle dish here and it was really good. Def give them a try! Oh, Prawnaholics. You live up to the hype. First off, Urban Hawker is such a cool market! I was actually very shocked to find a south/southeast Asian market smack in the middle of midtown! While there were many places I wanted to try, Prawnaholics has my beloved char kway teo, so I made a beeline for that place. The noodles were divine! I've never been to Malaysia, so I've only had this dish here in the states, but this was the first time there were pieces of lard in the noodles as is custom. Also the portion is HUGE!! Woahhh was all I could think as we walked into this modern, hip, Singaporean food hall in the heart of NYC. There were tons of southeast Asian flavors and cuisines in this melting pot of a spot. It's too bad not all of the stalls were open that day. The absolute hands down BEST thing I had at Urban Hawker was from TRADISYON, a Filipino vendor was the Rambutan Pineapple Salad. It was refreshing, tangy, savory, and soo unique. It was loaded with rambutan, pineapple, jicama, and cucumber. I was enamored with the contrast of flavors and was particularly intrigued by the crunch. It took me a while to figure out what it was and then I realized the salad was topped with corn nuts!! It was so genius and sooo good. I vowed to find a way to remake the dish someday at home. In the meantime, I will just have to make the trek to Urban Hawker to relive the experience. read more

I've been to this Singaporean / Asian food hall a couple of times now. The interior is vast, with a very nice, organized layout. There was also seating throughout the space. The first time I came here, it was with a bunch of friends after church. It was a little overwhelming because there were so many tasty looking options. I finally decided on the Teriyaki Salmon with fried rice from Mr. Fried Rice. However, what I was actually served did not match the photo, which showed Chinese sausage fried rice. There definitely was not any sausage in the rice. The Salmon was decent, as it was tender and marinated in the sweet teriyaki sauce. The rice, however, was quite bland. I also got Pumpkin Spice kopi coffee from Kopifellas, which was enjoyable. There was a nice pumpkin flavor and the coffee was smooth and creamy with just the right amount of sweetness. I tried some desserts from Lady Wong, including the exquisite looking Coffee Ferraro Rocher Cake and Ube Nian Gao. I really wasn't a fan of the Ferraro Rocher Cake and there was not even a hint of any coffee and barely any hazelnut taste. Thankfully I was able to get my money back for that. The Ube Nian Gao was delicious and satisfyingly sticky. The second time I visited, I brought a friend for dinner. I went with Prawnaholics dish consisting of shrimp, ribs with noodles. This was beautifully plated, and very good. The shrimp was succulent, juicy, while the ribs were perfectly cooked and full of bold flavor. The noodles were nicely al dente. From Kopifellas, I had the White Chocolate kopi coffee, which was a lovely blend of cocoa and coffee. This is a wonderful concept, and executed fairly well. The staff are helpful and welcoming. Prices are decent, especially for the area. Next time, I would like to get the Black Pepper Crab from Uglylicious and the Mango Sticky Rice Tart from Lady Wong. read more

Overhyped - Tourist Trap I am super disappointed with the food we got on our visit to this supposedly raved Hawker "food hall". Probably made famous with the late Anthony Bourdain backing & concept but not sure if the food truly 100% represents Singapore. (Guess I'll find this Summer!). The space is nice but definitely could have more seatings, a little awkward how close some tables were to each other; like an island and inconvenient to go from one stall to another without bumping into other patrons. We went early, plenty of seatings, they have service ppl cleaning so they kept it clean. Food: -Lady Wong - 4/5 (amazing Pandan dessert, wish the box held it more firmly... train ride damaged it just a bit) -Kopifellas - 3/5 (tried the Yuan Yang, coffee + tea mix, it was good, wish it was hotter, lukewarm is not my preference; $5 + tip). -White Restaurant - 3/5 (signature set... boon hee? Basically a vermicelli in sauce/broth w/ chicken and shrimp. This was very flavorful.
