Had such a fun time kayaking on the Chicago River! It was such a cool and unique experience to be so low in the water and surrounded by these towering historic buildings and boats. We had seen Urban Kayaks online while planning our trip and thought it looked like fun. After seeing it in action on a day that we were doing an architecture tour, we were a little hesitant because of the busy waters, but we decided to do it early morning on a weekday, and we were just about the only ones out on the river. Seriously, only two tour boats passed us the entire time! We went out for about an hour at 9:30am, which seemed to be the perfect time for calm waters. They have an informational video you watch before heading out that does a great job educating you on the safety of the river, and where you can go for the time you're planning. An hour went by super quick, and we were paddling most of the time, so if you want to relax and take in the scenery a little bit more, you may want to allocate more time for this!

Our tour guide was great. I believe his name was Drew. Good views and the tour had some good information. We did the sunset tour. We had to move a day due to the weather and they made that a easy process.

Overall a pleasant experience. Lost 2 stars only because of 1 rude staff member. They have plenty of kayaks for rental so we did not need to worry that they would run out. Our group has had experience kayaking before, so we opted for the rentals and not the guide. Before going out on the river, they had us watch an informational video which was very helpful in understanding how to navigate the river. Then, we were instructed to "pass" one of their male staff member's "test" in order to allow us to go to the river without the guide. They made us sit on these benches and the staff member asked us to demonstrate how to go front, turn right, etc with the paddle. Now kayaking is not rocket science, but this staff member was SO RUDE AND CONDESCENDING FOR NO REASON! We knew how to do the strokes but he kept grilling us and making us feel bad. I listened to their other female staff members conduct this test in other sessions and they were so sweet and helpful but not this man. He completely soured the beginning of our kayaking experience. Thankfully, he allowed us to go without a guide. Honestly felt like a total upsell to try and get us to purchase a guide even though we felt confident to kayak on our own. When we actually got on the river, it was very peaceful, fun, safe experience.

We had a fantastic experience with Urban Kayaks. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and made us feel safe. Perfect way to spend some time to see the Riverwalk from a different view. They gave us great advice to go early - to avoid a lot of boat traffic.

The guide was knowledgeable of the businesses involved in the river. As well as Chicago history. I would recommend getting a room if you dont stay close because you will get wet

Really fun place to kayak and see the city! Went with my friend and we really communicated to eachother well while kayaking! I think coming here for a first date wouldn't be a good idea since it requires a lot of trust I recommended this place even to native chicagoans

What a unique shared adventure with My Love. It was spectacular kayaking the Chicago River, while enjoying all the beautiful skyscrapers of Chicago ! We can't wait to return with the adult kids and grandchildren!!

Wanted to take my fiancée on a visit through the riverwalk, but didn't have too much time to do the architecture tour. So instead, we opted for a 1hr rental at Urban Kayaks. Getting here does require about 10-15min minimum of walking pretty much regardless of where you park so plan accordingly. Once you get there though, there are a few safety checks you need to do. Afterwards they direct you to an area to watch a video regarding kayak rules specifically on the river walk. The staff I felt like weren't really paying attention and we ended up sitting for a while just waiting before someone asked and we were told we had to start the video ourselves. A bit annoying to waste some time, but thankfully they don't start you for the hour rental until you're actually on the water which is nice. The kayaking itself is nice. It can be slightly chaotic with all the big and small boats. Waters can be a bit gross, too. But the views of the city while kayaking are second to none. Since we didn't do a tour, we were able to pretty leisurely go around the riverwalk. I've lived here for almost my entire life and have been on the river walk many, many times. But this was the first time I've ever seen it from this angle and I'm really glad I tried it! Definitely would consider this a pretty quintessential activity for summertime Chicago. Though if you're really balling out, probably opt to rent one of those small boats lol.

    Gorgeous day for kayaking

Great activity! Everyone should experience the river on a kayak at least once, whether you live in the city or are just visiting! The company was easy to work with. We made an online reservation and completed all forms online. We watched a safety video and showed up at our reserved time. We were given life vests, briefly practiced rowing techniques, and got to it! We reserved an hour in the morning, which was perfect because there were barely any boats. At the point where the river splits, you choose which way to go. You can also do guided tours with stops throughout the river.

The instructors were incredibly helpful in explanations and making us feel safe while kayaking in the busy river. It was a super fun experience!

Fun way to see all the buildings and sites of Chicago riverwalk. Would def recommend it for out of town. Go at your own pace.

Perfect customer service, very knowledgeable staff and wonderful experience overall. It was a really pretty day too, perfect for kayaking

We rented kayaks while visiting CHI. I have also taken a tour with Water Riders and both are great companies. The staff here was very friendly and we had a place to store our luggage too. It was easy to get on a kayak and return toboats, their dock. It does get a little dicey crossing the river and dodging the tour boats but once across stay near the edge of the river and you will be fine. This is a fantastic way to see downtown CHI.

The process was quick, check in, sign waiver forms, get your paddle, life vest and helmet and you're ready to go. Before we got in the water we got some instructions how to go down the main rapids: Wildcat Falls, Lone Star Dam and the Narrows. The Wildcat falls, go towards the right of the river, aim center of the two giant boulders and go down left. Most people went way right down it and got stuck at the bottom boulder and some fell in the water. We manage to go down successfully after watching a few rafters. The Lone Star Dam, stay close to the right side to go down it. The rest of the dam has a under tow that can be really dangerous and can pin you down specially if you go down sideways. The Narrows, make sure to hit it straight on and just ride the rapids. That was my favorite section. Yes, this can be dangerous. Just follow the instructions, ask a lot of questions and know your ability. Their is no guide on the raft with you. Tips before going. -Make sure to watch the safety video first, link provided on their website. -Make sure to check the water level and speed at the US coastguard link provided on their website as well. -Lastly know your ability or skills/experience paddling/kayaking/rafting. -I also watched a few YouTube videos to have an idea of the areas mentioned above. -They only accept cash or check. Today, 6/8/19, the water level was 8 feet deep and flowrate of 1500. Classified as Class 3. There was a huge group of boys scouts out the same time we did it and everyone got through it safely and had fun.

As other reviews state, avoid the dam area , paddle to the right.

I was into stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) so I was considered a paddler. SUP in Chicago can be hard. Lake Michigan is unfriendly to beginners so the lagoon used by the Lincoln Park Boat Club is perfect. The water is smooth, shallow and dirty enough to motivate you to keep your balance! The equipment at the LPBC is great too. There are a variety of SUP boards ranging from foam beasts that would never tip over to slender racing boards. Most of the storage was taken up by other boats. Some vessels were owned by members and others were owned by the club and could be used by anybody. Since the LPBC is completely run by volunteers, everybody has a lot of responsibility and autonomy. A lot of it is run on the honor system. For example, keeping the dock clean of goose poop and locking the garage was everyone's responsibility. To my knowledge, there was no cleaning or maintenance crew. There are no bells and whistles. The LPBC members I met were friendly. The SUP folks were competitive. It just wasn't my scene. I wanted a place to relax, skim across the water, and be outdoors. The other people I met were perfecting their techniques, getting stronger and racing. I ended up going only about four or five times, or about $100/visit. I'd remain a member if I could pay less than the competitive, more dedicated people. I asked if there could be a modified membership or a pay-per-visit deal but (as of this review) those aren't options.

I went as slow as I was capable of paddling or not paddling, but apparently it was too fast for the preference of our tour guide. I was barely touching the water with my paddle. I have no idea how I could have gone any slower. It wasn't humanly possible. After shouting at me several times, he took to chasing me down and ramming my kayak so it'd spin in circles. Would I rent a kayak here and kayak the river alone? Yes. Would I personally use a tour guide here? No I wouldn't. Would I recommend? If you're a family with little kids or a drunk sorority house, absolutely. If you know what you're doing, just go it alone. You'll probably enjoy it more. Edit: If the tour guide had concerns for group safety, he could have said so. Although ramming my kayak with his seems to be a bit of a conflict as far as my safety goes. It was an unprofessional approach when he could have simply explained why he needed me to slow down
