Super friendly. Easy access! Prices are definitely reasonable. The military discount is an added bonus. I love being able to start at Lake Shore Drive and go along the river. Definitely will be coming back for another relax day even with me living in Chicagoland. Crossing my fingers for a sunny day the next time!

Came here a few months back in the summer and it was a great experience! If you even remotely are interested or enjoy kayaking, you should absolutely try with urban for their downtown river tour! Drew and Caroline gave an excellent tour, as they were friendly, funny and were enthusiastic about sharing the unique information about the architecture downtown. The requirements are pretty straightforward, as they teach you all you need to know and the kayaks are well kept. The tour is about 2 miles overall and 2 hours in total. A bit pricey but I would say it's more than worth it for the experience and I would rent with them again.

Had such a fun time kayaking on the Chicago River! It was such a cool and unique experience to be so low in the water and surrounded by these towering historic buildings and boats. We had seen Urban Kayaks online while planning our trip and thought it looked like fun. After seeing it in action on a day that we were doing an architecture tour, we were a little hesitant because of the busy waters, but we decided to do it early morning on a weekday, and we were just about the only ones out on the river. Seriously, only two tour boats passed us the entire time! We went out for about an hour at 9:30am, which seemed to be the perfect time for calm waters. They have an informational video you watch before heading out that does a great job educating you on the safety of the river, and where you can go for the time you're planning. An hour went by super quick, and we were paddling most of the time, so if you want to relax and take in the scenery a little bit more, you may want to allocate more time for this!

Overall a pleasant experience. Lost 2 stars only because of 1 rude staff member. They have plenty of kayaks for rental so we did not need to worry that they would run out. Our group has had experience kayaking before, so we opted for the rentals and not the guide. Before going out on the river, they had us watch an informational video which was very helpful in understanding how to navigate the river. Then, we were instructed to "pass" one of their male staff member's "test" in order to allow us to go to the river without the guide. They made us sit on these benches and the staff member asked us to demonstrate how to go front, turn right, etc with the paddle. Now kayaking is not rocket science, but this staff member was SO RUDE AND CONDESCENDING FOR NO REASON! We knew how to do the strokes but he kept grilling us and making us feel bad. I listened to their other female staff members conduct this test in other sessions and they were so sweet and helpful but not this man. He completely soured the beginning of our kayaking experience. Thankfully, he allowed us to go without a guide. Honestly felt like a total upsell to try and get us to purchase a guide even though we felt confident to kayak on our own. When we actually got on the river, it was very peaceful, fun, safe experience.

Our tour guide was great. I believe his name was Drew. Good views and the tour had some good information. We did the sunset tour. We had to move a day due to the weather and they made that a easy process.

We had a fantastic experience with Urban Kayaks. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and made us feel safe. Perfect way to spend some time to see the Riverwalk from a different view. They gave us great advice to go early - to avoid a lot of boat traffic.

The guide was knowledgeable of the businesses involved in the river. As well as Chicago history. I would recommend getting a room if you dont stay close because you will get wet

Really fun place to kayak and see the city! Went with my friend and we really communicated to eachother well while kayaking! I think coming here for a first date wouldn't be a good idea since it requires a lot of trust I recommended this place even to native chicagoans

Make sure you hit play... it doesn't start on its own

Wanted to take my fiancée on a visit through the riverwalk, but didn't have too much time to do the architecture tour. So instead, we opted for a 1hr rental at Urban Kayaks. Getting here does require about 10-15min minimum of walking pretty much regardless of where you park so plan accordingly. Once you get there though, there are a few safety checks you need to do. Afterwards they direct you to an area to watch a video regarding kayak rules specifically on the river walk. The staff I felt like weren't really paying attention and we ended up sitting for a while just waiting before someone asked and we were told we had to start the video ourselves. A bit annoying to waste some time, but thankfully they don't start you for the hour rental until you're actually on the water which is nice. The kayaking itself is nice. It can be slightly chaotic with all the big and small boats. Waters can be a bit gross, too. But the views of the city while kayaking are second to none. Since we didn't do a tour, we were able to pretty leisurely go around the riverwalk. I've lived here for almost my entire life and have been on the river walk many, many times. But this was the first time I've ever seen it from this angle and I'm really glad I tried it! Definitely would consider this a pretty quintessential activity for summertime Chicago. Though if you're really balling out, probably opt to rent one of those small boats lol.

    Gorgeous day for kayaking

Great activity! Everyone should experience the river on a kayak at least once, whether you live in the city or are just visiting! The company was easy to work with. We made an online reservation and completed all forms online. We watched a safety video and showed up at our reserved time. We were given life vests, briefly practiced rowing techniques, and got to it! We reserved an hour in the morning, which was perfect because there were barely any boats. At the point where the river splits, you choose which way to go. You can also do guided tours with stops throughout the river.

What a unique shared adventure with My Love. It was spectacular kayaking the Chicago River, while enjoying all the beautiful skyscrapers of Chicago ! We can't wait to return with the adult kids and grandchildren!!

The instructors were incredibly helpful in explanations and making us feel safe while kayaking in the busy river. It was a super fun experience!

The building may be new but this school has a lot of history in the city. There is a beautiful green space on the roof of the school. It is great to go up here and enjoy the urban jungle which is our city. There is also a fun play area for the students including nets overhead...we would not want a basketball going over the side and hitting someone in the head 3 stories below. Ouch!!! The staff here is great. They truly care about the students. The IB program here is also really great too. I wish I could go back to grade school and attend here. I also love the front office and the security guards too. Everyone here is so friendly and it makes the experience of school fun. I also must throw out some congrats to Kenneth Staral the school principal. He cares so much about education and the well being of all of the students. If it was not for him, I am sure that this school would not be this successful. He is a blessing for putting together such a great education plan for the students. In the warmer months, there is a guy that lives in the high rise, over the school on Oak, that will play his bag pipes on the top floor of his balcony. At first, I thought I was in some movie with hidden cameras but then realized this guy was up there practicing. So if you are ever walking around the school and you hear the music just look up and you will see this guy. I do get a tear in my eye when he starts playing "Danny Boy"! My little one will start to dance...he has even waved at us from 20 stories above. Fun Fact: The school is named after the first mayor of Chicago. Mr Ogden was involved in real estate, he also was involved with canals too. In fact, his company cut out the canal that made Goose Island in Chicago. He later moved on to the railroads and was president of Union Pacific. He built a railroad to Wisconsin to bring grain to Chicago and also a railroad out West too. He was on the cutting edge of progress and growing our nation. The parents, students, faculty and staff make the learning experience here at Ogden great and I look forward to many more years here.

When I was a kid, I had aced the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Did you know you could ace them?…read moreNeither did I. What I mean by that is that I scored a straight 99th percentile on every single one of my Iowa Tests and got a strange invitation in the mail. The invitation was from pre-International Baccalaureate Program to take an exam and potentially join Abraham Lincoln Elementary or William B. Ogden Elementary. Little did I know, this little invitation would change the rest of my life. At the exam, I met a friend that had moved away in third grade and we laughed wondering why we were both here. We both talked and said that Ogden School sounded better than Lincoln Elementary School, so that is what we decided. After taking their exam, I also had an interview. I was informed that I had scored the fifth best in the city and that I could pick Ogden or Lincoln. Seeing as my friend and I agreed on Odgen, Ogden it was. I missed my first day of school because the school bus did not show up until 9 in the morning, but by then I had already walked back to Volta Elementary as I did not know what to do. Over the years the bus was pretty consistent, except for the day that I missed it and decided to take the train downtown to school. Being eleven years old, sometimes you just don't know where you're going. I got off the train and started walking and then realized that I had no idea where I was. I walked into a police station and yelled, "Help, I need help!" After explaining that I was lost and late for school two cops drove me six blocks to school and apologized for swearing like pirates. I arrived to the playground in the back of a cop car and the kids thought that I had been arrested! With regard to the curriculum, it was a bar up from the Gifted Program that I had been in Volta Elementary and the adjustments took awhile because whereas before I was able to dominate, I struggled with the new social situation and had to take extra time to regain my bearings. By 7th grade, I was doing well in school again and liked French class the best since it was the most interesting. I still speak French today, which serves as a testament of the merits of Ogden's rigorous curriculum. At Ogden, you also learn to deal with kids coming from the deep south side and kids who live right around the corner on the Gold Coast. The pre-IB Program at Ogden set me up well for my future IB entry exams at Lincoln Park High School. The French curriculum is a must have for kids who will want to be speaking French in the future and is a cheaper alternative than sending kids out for private lessons. I also learned the ability to respect and tolerate the diversity of races and socioeconomic statuses of the various Chicagoans that will be found at this school. If you ever wonder who William B. Ogden was, he was the first mayor of Chicago. He worked extensively with land developers and reached the epic agreement that guarantees the land on our lakefront as public parks now and forever. Well forever until the city decides to lease it out for the next quick buck.

I was given a 90 minute pass for dinner and they seem strict on the time. My friend also gave me a tour. It's an impressive space!! About 450,000 square feet, spanning across 2 full city blocks and 5 levels. They have everything you can think of: pools (4 pools!), saunas, restaurants, tennis, golf, basketball, boxing, group glasses, weights, machines, pickleball, spa, hair and nail salon, indoor running track, co-working space, and so much more. Beautiful artwork, pristine locker rooms and restrooms. Wow! High ceilings and so much space overall. Nothing felt crowded. Beautiful design and layout. I was in awe and very impressed.

After seeing all the crazy amenities which were super cool with a ton of variety, I think the thing that surprised me the most is how up-to-date all of the equipment was and the variety of activities they had for people to enjoy. If you're looking for an all encompassing workout/work space, this is it! They have everything from full-size tennis courts, to a golf simulator-like set up,except you get to hit into an inflatable pillow! They also had plenty of Pickleball courts, and they offer so many different workout group classes.both a wet and dry, sauna, and tons of treadmills and free weights. I was also really impressed that they also had a physical training area. So think something that was my personal favorite and the best thing for Chicago Summers is a beautiful rooftop pool and lounge area. Not only did they have two outdoor pools (one for adults and one for kids) but they also have an indoor pool as well for winter as well as an indoor hot tub! They also had a common area workspace where people can come to take meetings and do their work from home gigs. You could practically move in here haha! As of right now, it is a $750 new membership fee as well as $295 a month, which is a pretty hefty chunk of change if you ask me considering most of the high rises around, have some kind of rooftop pool and workout area. It is cheaper if you join with a domestic partner or if you're between the ages of 16 and 29-see pic for current pricing. They also sometimes host social events which is super fun to meet everyone else in the club, but at the same time I think it is more of an investment in your future and your future health if you can afford it! I will not be joining at the moment, but hey-that could change anytime if I decide I should be on a health kick.
