One of Manchester's newest markets, the Urban Market - held in Greengate Square, where there are normally fountains a'flowing - is right on my doorstep. It's times like this that I count myself one of the luckiest people in the world.
Opening in conjunction with the upcoming Salford Food and Drink Festival, this is a food/drink/crafts fair that's 100% worth a wonder round. Whether you're after beer, sausages, cheese, olives, a glass of Pimm's, a hanging basket for your balcony, or a bite to eat, you can find it here. We walked away with some Satay Stormers sausage from Pig & Co for dinner; the woman behind the stall was more than happy to offer some tasting and explain the background of the goods.
However, I was drawn in by the promise of street food. After a quick perusal on Twitter, I realised that different vendors will be there on different days - cue me putting on 10 pounds every weekend that it runs. Today, we had the choice of Mama K's American-Mexican, Kaiser Caribbean or Crepes.
I went straight in for Mama K's; £5 for a burrito or taco bowl, with your choice of as many fillings as you wanted (and they could fit it.) Sign me up! I went for beef with their homemade spicy cheese sauce, lettuce, cowboy beans, rice, cheese, homemade guac, a touch of ranch and some mild salsa. Wow. The service was super friendly and I would go back in a heartbeat. The boyf, who woke up feeling a tad ill, went for something a bit 'lighter' - the piri-piri chicken wrap from Kaiser Caribbean. Perfectly soft chicken, cheese, lettuce and bbq sauce.
The only reason for the 3 stars is the fact we didn't spend a huge amount of time there, due to the other half's illness (and feeling of impending rain...). I will undoubtedly be back to try out more food and stock up on more goodies. Tomorrow, perhaps... read more
