Rezzi I.

I rarely head down to Urban Outfitters, because it's almost at the tail end of Princes Street. Too far. However, I was in desperate need of some sunglasses (in Edinburgh I know!) and decided they were bound to have something passably cool enough. Sadly the only pickings left in the women's section were quite pathetic; it made me wonder why the female section of a store can sometimes resemble a looted shop whereas there's usually a little more calm in the men's. Let's think about that. I emerged 30 minutes later very happy with my purchase of men's aviators (though I was told they're unisex anyway) and a bit glad I didn't waste any money on needless shopping. Because the clothes there, as bizarre as they may seem at times, are pretty fabulous. A tad more expensive than some of the stores at the beginning of Princes Street, but worth it in my opinion. You see, Urban Outfitters have successfully convinced me that they're "cool" and I'll forever think so. Maybe minus the "Eat Less" t-shirt they came up with. Someone high up must have had a brain fart.

I caved and spent £12 on a jar with a lid and a straw! It was cute and I had been paid so its all good. Even better was the girl at the till said if you are a student you get 10% off then put it through as a student before I could even answer, I like her style especially since its 13 years since my uni days! I was in here buying a birthday present for a friend. Which i managed so mission accomplished! This place is always good for buying novelty parcels, utter rubbish but makes you smile. Does one really need an inflatable unicorn horn to put on a cat? There is trendy clothes, bags and books but for me it's all about the gimmicky mug that has a slot to hold a biscuit! Only here for novel present buying, but that's ok.

This is a new store finally to grace our rather, up until now, modest shopping street Princes Street and we've welcomed it with open arms. it is a bit love-hate relationship with Urban Outfitters, I sometimes feel that there's only about 8 cool things in the shops that make the other things look cool. It's all very "fashionable" and with fashionable comes over priced highstreet. However, the amount of great, long lasting purses and bags I've got over the years from the Glasgow store really makes up for it. The sales are always pretty decent and always have great little gifts.

Ugh. I have to four star it, even though I know it's contrived! My feet always decide for me that I'm coming in for a look, but this branch in Edinburgh isn't too painful. They have a huge floorspace to work with, including a massive sales section at the back. The staff are friendly, it's well laid out and has the new, cool vibe of Urban Outfitters in America. Believe it or not, the Americans sell different stock to us. I always say I'm not a fan of Urban Outfitters, but what you need to learn about me, boys and girls, is that I am a huge hypocrite. I'll be warning my kids about this awful trait. I say one thing - with conviction, no less! - but do another. So yes, I genuinely wish I never shopped in here because it's so gloriously self-conscious, but they do sell some gorgeous clothes. Edinburgh's outlet is no exception, and if you can afford to spend some pennies in here at least their stuff lasts. And since Urban Outfitters cash in on older, "retro" trends, you can keep the stuff for years and bring it out of mothballs in 2030 when you're having a midlife crisis. That is, if you still fit into the tiny, tiny skirts and skinny jeans. I for one intend to become a complete pie after 40 and embrace the middle age spread, so I am enjoying their gorgeous wares now. By the way, is the early 90s now retro? I missed the memo. Feck, I'm getting old.

I am not usually a massive fan of Urban Outfitters, but you really can't help but be drawn in by this huge store on Princes Street. The exterior is impressive enough; an industrial metal 'Urban Outfitters' sign hangs over the door, and looks incredibly stylish and ott! I loved the look of the place, and it continues right through the huge doors which open right out into the street, really inviting you in. The ground floor is laid out beautifully with plenty of space to get around and look, and there is even a couch with books and CD's where you can chill out and have a flick through the books, which I hadn't seen done before. The women's range is very extensive and includes loads of jewellery and shoes, as well as accessories which are all outposted within the different ranges of clothing. There is even a vintage section. In the basement, there is a small home wares section with a few steps down into more gift wares and then men's clothing. It isn't as big as the women's section but it is very good and has loads of great gift ideas for the man in your life. Brilliant store, by far the best I have ever been in, and still exudes that trendy Indie feel that Urban Outfitters is best known for.

I rather like Urban Outfitters and I think this cavernous store is a welcome addition to Princes St. People moan about the price of the clothes, but I think things generally represent good value for money; I spent £60 on a pair of unusual trousers in the Glasgow store about 5 years ago and I still wear them when an occasion requires something smart yet quirky (job interviews in the arts for example). My boyfriend asserts that this is the only place in which to get a decent pair of jeans; he recently got some reconditioned Levi's for £80 and he'll wear them until they come apart at the seams, so money well spent.

Dick's Edinburgh - This is the Jamieson's Shetland wool fair isle jumper I purchased.

I had it in mind to buy myself a fair isle jumper (in the U.S. we'd call it a pullover sweater)…read moreduring our trip to Scotland. I did some online research before we left home and learned that to be considered authentic, one of the requirements is that it be fashioned from Shetland wool, as opposed to cashmere, merino, or lambs wool. I found a very useful thread on Reddit that listed several reputable shops in Edinburgh (our base of operations while in Scotland), including this warning: "Whatever you do, don't go into any of the tat shops." Of course, then I had to ask Google what a "tat shop" was. In the United States, my guess would have been a tattoo parlor, but that didn't make sense. A "tat shop" is a souvenir store. I made some phone calls when we got to Edinburgh. Many stores in the UK are closed on either Monday/Tuesday or Tuesday/Wednesday, so that narrowed our choices. Other stores had no fair isle jumpers in stock. Still, I was undeterred and kept calling around. After only two or three calls, I reached Dicks Edinburgh and was told that they did have exactly what I was seeking. A few hours later, after we had toured Edinburgh Castle, we hopped into a cab and went straight there. My husband and I were the only customers, and the entire staff (two women and a man) were collectively attentive to us. It took me only a few minutes to decide on the perfect jumper. It was a lovely experience from start to finish. Dicks Edinburgh is clearly a quality clothing store, and I would not hesitate to shop there again.

This store stocks a huge amount of suits in every colour imaginable. As well as some other smart clothes, like your tweed coat yah. The service was fantastic, there are few shops which offer such a high standard of service. The shop assistant was very polite and listened to what my dad was looking for and came up with a tonne of options. He gave advice and was really helpful. We settled on the second suit my Dad tried, and the best thing is they alter for free! This was the Monday and the guy said we could pick up the altered suit on Saturday. As my Dad doesn't live in Edinburgh I said I would pick it up but it would be two weeks later as I was going on holiday on Saturday. Not a problem, he organised the suit to be ready for the Wednesday. My brothers picked up their suits from another branch of Slaters and they were just as good.

My brother got his suit for his school leavers dance from Slaters and many of my friends have recently had to invest in a suit for Grad Balls and Slaters seems to be the most popular option. It also seems like the most wallet friendly option as a friend of mine got his suit for £80, I didn't realise you could get suits at such a bargain price! Prices range from under £100 to £200+ so it depends how flush you're feeling I guess. You don't have to go all out and buy a suit or kilt you can also hire them if you don't really need them all that much, just don't get carried away with the red wine.

I normally take visitors to this store purely because its less annoying than the rest of the tourist tat shops. You know the ones I mean, the shops that blast bagpipe music out into the street all day and have See You Jimmy hats hanging off the window. For some reason these shops really annoy the locals. Thankfully Romanes and Paterson is not like that. Romanes and Paterson has been around since the 1860's, which is a good enough reason alone to support a historic business. The shop stocks cashmere, kilts, woolen goods, tartan gifts, shortbread, Edinburgh Castle Rock and whatever else it is tourists in Scotland like to buy. It really is ideal for tourists coming to Scotland who wish to purchase their souvenirs to take back home. Its much better than all those shops previously mention which just stock complete tat. There is also a cafe in the store which does a good afternoon tea and is waiter service. The only waiter service cafe on Princes Street I'm told, I guess that is probably true in a world full of Costas and Starbucks.

Ahem. My friend bought her grandmother one of those fantastic post cards of sexy scottish men wearing nothing but kilts (and some even flashing some bum!). I've been far more decent, and managed to get some good deals on a cashmere sweater and some playing cards for my dad. This store is quite classy for a souvenir store, and I certainly don't feel too much shame buying presents there.
