Listed below is information regarding this…read morecottage This cottage is typical of the pioneer dwellings built by homesteaders who settled in rural Dade County during the early 1900s through 1930s. It belonged to Carl Whilden, chief foreman at Fairchild Tropical Garderns. Whilden built the cottage in 1932 on land belonging to his wife Mary Carrier. The Carriers were an early pioneer family from Quebec, Canada, that homesteaded on 20 acres of pine woodlands located near Snapper Creek and Ludlam Road. The Whildens lived in this cottage from the Depression through the early 1970s. Their property included vegetable gardens, fruit trees, tropical specimens and native species bounded by oolitic rock walls and terraces. The cottage was designated a historic site by Miami-Dade County's Historic Preservation Board in 2000 and was relocated to Pinecrest Gardens in 2003.

Several musicians played nice music, there was good food at a couple of kiosks on the back, and a beer and wine vendor. Everything was in support of... so be honest, I'm not sure but it was about birds. I will be coming back to more shows here. It's a very nice way to spend an evening.

The non profit Tropical Audubon Society (TAS) has its origins as the Coconut Grove Audubon Society…read more(CGAS), founded April 16, 1915, as Dade County's first Audubon organization. CGAS members met in homes and worked to advocated for bird and wildlife protection, protection of birds hunted for their plumes with the hiring of game wardens, ornithological education for school children and the public, and they also collaborated in the movement to establish Everglades National Park. WWII led to the CGAS becoming inactive in 1942. Led by Charles Brookfield, then employed by National Audubon Society, a new chapter of the National Audubon Society was established in 1947. The Tropical Audubon Society (TAS) has been on the frontlines of conservation and environmental protection issues in South Florida. The mission of the Tropical Audubon Society is to "conserve and restore South Florida ecosystems, focusing on birds, wildlife, and their habitats. The Tropical Audubon Society has been headquartered at the 1932 Doc Thomas House since 1976. It has been designated a Miami-Dade County Historic Site, a Florida Heritage Site, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Arden Hayes Thomas, Jr. was a pharmacist from Indiana who moved to South Miami in 1925, and opened the O. K. Drug Store just months before the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926. His business grew to managing two stores on Sunset Drive and Thomas invested in a 2.5 acres of property on the south side of Sunset Drive in the subdivision of High Pines. He commissioned Robert Fitch Smith, one of the first six graduates of the University of Miami architecture program, to create a home that would look like part of the piney landscape. He created a rustic house in the Florida wood-frame vernacular style of architecture that exemplified the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement. Created out of cypress, oak, pine mahogany, and local limestone, the home has detailed woodwork, a limestone fireplace, and built in features. Fitch went on to a storied career as an architect, taught at the University of Miami, and served on the first City of Miami Planning Board. In the 1950's Doc Thomas retired and traveled the world. A life long conservationist and bachelor, Doc Thomas decided to leave his home and the surrounding 2 acres of woodlands to the TAS. He deeded the property to them in December of 1974 and he passed away exactly one year later. Since 1976 the house has functioned as the home of Tropical Audubon Society while the surrounding acreage now serves as the Steinberg Nature Center. I discovered this delightful nature oasis and historic home in the middle of South Miami while eating lunch in the area. The gate is open so you can walk around what feels like a a secret garden. On Saturday, January 7, 1-2pm or 3-4pm the Tropical Audubon Society will host a public tour of the historic Doc Thomas House headquarters which has recently undergone structural repair and restoration. The tour is free although donations are welcome and lasts for 1 hour guided by a Tropical Audubon docent. The tour focuses on Arden Hayes "Doc" Thomas and Robert Fitch Smith and explores the near-native Steinberg Nature Center campus. The Steinberg Nature Center contains Pine Rockland, a globally endangered ecosystem. It is only located in south Miami, the Keys, and parts of the Bahamas. Pine Rockland once covered 180,000 acres or 12 percent of Miami but by the time Miami turned 100 in 1996, less than 2 percent remained. Today only fragments of the Pineland remain. It is a critical refuge for endangered plants and animals, some not found anywhere else in the world. Come out and learn about this important ecosystem and the pioneers who lived here and built South Miami.

It is part of the Historical Marker Program, one of the Division of Historical Resources' most popular and valued public history programs. The markers raise awareness of Florida's cultural history while enhancing the enjoyment of historic sites for residents and tourists. The blue historic markers tell the stories of the people and places that were important to Florida's history and they can be found in front of schools, roads, archaeological sites, battlefields, cemeteries, churches, historic districts, forts, and historic buildings like this one. Historic marker F-1278 was installed on October 15, 2025 by Fleischer Studios, The Animation Education Association, and the Florida Department of State. Fleischer Studios was founded in 1929 by brothers Max and Dave Fleischer. After conflict with unions in New York, the brothers moved the studio to the Grapeland Heights neighborhood of Miami where it operated from 1938 to 1942. In the 1930's its primary competition was Walt Disney Studios. Fleischer Studios studio was known for creating popular cartoons like Koko the Clown, Popeye, Betty Boop, and two full feature films Gulliver's Travels (1939) and Mr. Bug Goes to Town (1941). It was the first studio to bring Superman to film. In its hey day they employed 760 artists. Fleischer studio cartoons dealt with adult themes, surrealism, and expressionism. The studio building was one of the first fully air-conditioned commercial buildings in Florida. In 1942 the studio was acquired by Paramount Pictures who closed it. In 2000 the building was the Dade County Child Development Center. Today it serves as a Miami Police Department substation. The building has been officially designated a historical landmark.

Great for dipping into or just sitting on the grass and enjoying. Beautiful, simple walking trail that goes around the island full of nature w/ easy water access. Wonderful little lighthouse. It was closed to tours when we visited, but hopefully it's opened up by now. Have to come by boat. We booked a tour with the Biscayne National Institute and got to spend about an hour or so here - we had a great time! Just wish we could've spent more time on the island. You can also take your own boat out, and they have docks you can rent. Perfect location for camping. Just be aware that while there's toilets, there is no drinking water or other facilities - so bring everything you need. 100% worthy of the visit.

A small location to dock about 20 boats on the wall, a small party pavilion, camping where you wish. Historic coral houses, bathroom, hiking trail, and a luscious turquoise beach. Ouch to the feet. Many shells. Make sure you check in on the park app and pay if you dock or camp. About 15 miles from Miami, you hear nothing but the mosquitos and no see-ums. But man I love this place. Put it on your list if You're from Miam-a.

Vanderbilt Mansion offers some history. It is now part of the Fisher island club…read more The historic Mediterranean-style Vanderbilt Mansion was designed by renowned Palm Beach architect Maurice Fatio in 1935. It houses the Garwood Lounge and Piano Bar, the Snooker Club Billiards, the City View Café, the Library Drawing Room and Salon, Café Tangier, the Grand Ballroom, and a heated saltwater pool. While Fisher Island was bought by Carl Fisher in 1919, only a year later it was traded to William Vanderbilt II. The heir interestingly received the island in exchange for a large boat and only ten dollars. Over the next two decades, the Vanderbilts owned Fisher Island where they constructed an airplane landing dock, many large houses, and their ornate mansion that is still the island's centerpiece. Ownership has changed many times since Vanderbilt's death in 1944, with Fisher Island Club holding the reins since 1987.

It gives you awesome, elevated views of the colorful Brickell waterfront and Biscayne Bay in just minutes. It's a quick, easy way to take in the city's beauty without much effort. Just make sure to check traffic before heading out -- it's the only road to Key Biscayne, and it can get pretty backed up. But if you time it right, it's a perfect little Miami moment.

The standard review for this bridge would be there is a precast concrete structure that connects…read moremainland city of Miami to the village of Key Biscayne, to the north of this bridge, one can catch a view of downtown Miami and Miami Beach and to the south the bay and Coconut Grove. We know about Key Biscayne and what we've had a Yelpies event as well as a couple restaurants I've been to before and reviewed. However did you know that the shoulder of the bridge is one of Miami's prime running areas and doing it is considered an achievement for those of us into sports and working out? Besides the car lanes, there's a painted bike lane each way ad well as the shoulder aka the sidewalk of the bridge that a lot of Miami's weekend warriors take to jogging. It's a little over 70" tall (my smart watch has reported 71 and 74 feet) and roughly one mile over our beautiful bay. Park at the nearby Vizcaya metro rail station like I did and enjoy a 5 mile round trip run.. Why put yourself through this exercise? Well besides the health benefits of working out there's THE VIEW!! This is the place where you can catch a beautiful sunset (or sunrise), check out our shimmering downtown skyline, cranes from the Port and look at the party boats below cruising under the bridge. Besides, now in the time of "that which shall not be named " it's a great spot to see and meet other people. Here's to many more miles!!

Overtown was incorporated as a colored neighborhood in 1896 during segregation. It was the place…read morewhere Henry Flagler's black railroad workers lived while building the infrastructure of Miami. Overtown is the second oldest neighborhood in Miami. During the 1920's, it was home to D.A. Dorsey, one of the first black millionaires in the south. After WWII it became the epicenter of black culture and was known as the Broadway of the South. Many famous entertainers stayed here when performing in Miami like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Nat King Cole. In the 1950's the area suffered an economic decline and in the 1960's many residents were displaced by the construction of I-95. Almost 40 percent of the people live in poverty but the area has some exciting things happening like Marcus Samuelson opening the second location of his hugely successful Harlem restaurant, Red Rooster. St. Agnes Episcopal Church is a historic church in Overtown. It is one of Miami's oldest and largest churches. St. Agnes was organized in 1898 when Reverend James O. S. Huntington, a visiting Episcopalian Father Superior, learned that the Anglican Bahamians who had come to the Biscayne Bay area to work had no place to worship. The first service was held in a home near Flagler Street. In 1901, the Bahamian worshippers built the first St. Agnes' church building on a large corner lot donated by Henry Flagler at NW 3rd Avenue and NW 8th Street. St. Agnes' was chosen as the name because the majority of them had been members of the Saint Agnes Parish in New Providence on Blue Hill Road. Eventually the congregation grew so large that they outgrew the building. In the 1940s, St. Agnes was the third largest African-American Episcopal congregation in the nation. In 1929 Reverend John E. Culmer joined the church and worked to complete the building of the St Agnes Church building that exists today. A foundation was laid at a larger lot at NW 3rd Avenue and NW 18th Street. The building was designed by Harold Hastings Mundy, a prominent Miami architect in the early part of the twentieth century. He was known for the Spanish Colonial influence in his buildings. He also designed e Miami-Edison Senior High School and the Coconut Grove Public School. The outside of the building has elements of Gothic Revival and Mission. The roof was rounded instead of gabled in order to better protect it from storms. After becoming distraught over the tuberculosis deaths of several of his young parishioners, Rev. Culmer began a mission to improve conditions in Overtown. He brought the issue to the Greater Miami Negro Civic League and volunteered to serve as chairman of the league's fact-finding committee. By the early 1930s he had won the support of the editor of the Miami Herald, who published a series of columns on the unhealthy conditions in the community. St. Agnes' Episcopal Church was designated a historical site in 2003. You can still worship at St Agnes today.

The interior ornamentation is particularly noteworthy and includes an ornately carved marble altar from the congregation's original church and detailed ceiling. Although the building foundation was laid in 1923, a variety of setbacks delayed its construction, and the first service in the new sanctuary of St. Agnes' Episcopal Church was held in 1930. St. Agnes' Episcopal Church has served the religious and humanitarian needs of Miami's African-American community for many years, and it remains an active center in the Overtown area.

Historic marker F-1113 was installed in 2019 by the City of Coral Gables and the Florida Department of State. The MacFarlane Homestead and Golden Gate Subdivision are in the area, south of S. Dixie Highway and adjacent to the former Florida East Coast Railway, During segregation, these neighborhoods were home to many of Coral Gables' first African American residents from the Bahamas and the American South who arrived in the late 1800's and early 1900's for new opportunities during the land boom years.. These pioneers worked in Coconut Grove, Miami, and Coral Gables for the Peacock Inn, Deering Estate, and FEC Railway. They also assisted city founder George Merrick in building Coral Gables. The MacFarlane Homestead Subdivision is named after Flora MacFarlane, the plot's first female homesteader and schoolteacher who sold 19.61 acres of land to the Coral Gables Securities Corporation in 1925. The subdivision is bounded by Oak Avenue on the north, Grand Avenue on the south, Brooker Street on the east, and U.S. 1 on the west. It was incorporated into Coral Gables in 1925, after the Coral Gables Securities Corporation purchased the land from the Flora MacFarlane estate. The Golden Gate Subdivision is bounded by Le Jeune Road on the west, Grand Avenue and U.S. 1 on the north, Grant Drive on the south, and Lincoln Drive on the east. It was annexed by Coral Gables in 1926. Residences in both subdivisions were built of Dade County Slash Pine, Homes were designed in the shotgun and bungalow styles common to the Bahamas. Only two Bahamian Vernacular houses remain in Golden Gate today but there are many more in MacFarlane Homestead. Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church served as a focal point for the two subdivisions and helped build a feeling of community. The church's five deacons all helped build houses for residents in both neighborhoods. In 1924, George Merrick donated 5 acres in Golden Gate for the construction of an African American elementary and junior high school, the Dade Training School. The school was renamed for black agriculturalist George Washington Carver in the 1940's and designated a local historic landmark in 1991. Also in 1924 members of Macedonia Missionary Baptist founded St. Mary's Missionary Baptist Church. Services were held in the school until 1926 until permanent church building was constructed in MacFarlane Homestead. Through the efforts of the Lola B. Walker Homeowners Association, the MacFarlane Homestead Subdivision received a local historic designation in 1989, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. Pioneer Park in the community was dedicated to Lola Walker in 1984.
