Picture this: a strung out drug addict desperate for a fix. That was me following a long day of work. Except in my case I was desperate for a doughnut. Honestly, I was craving a doughnut so badly I might've just killed to get my hands on one. So on my route home I spot this tiny shop on Venice blvd. I figure it'll have to do because I'm far too tired and hangry to go on a junk food expedition. Although I'll admit, I considered making the drive to Randy's. So after popping an illegal u-turn (allegedly) I storm into this place. Dude working the counter was friendly and explained that it had been busy so there wasn't much left. I ended up grabbing a maple frosted and some buttermilk chocolate thing. The maple was delish! The dough was light and airy and the maple frosting wasn't overly sweet. The chocolate thing was underwhelming. The frosting was rich and tasty but the pastry itself was dense and dry. I'd like to come back earlier some other time though! Get a look at the full selection and see if it's as exciting as Randy's.

Preparing for my day of exploring, I had just hopped off the train and was super hungry. Conveniently, this place was just a short walk from the station. I could tell the regulars weren't used to outsiders infringing on their space as one whispered: "She's taking pictures of the donuts" -- like that's the strangest thing you've seen in LA...? Ha! Anyways, the folks working were so nice and helpful. The selection is made up of classic, no-frills donuts. I got a Long John with chocolate icing and a chocolate cake donut with chocolate icing and coconut. Both were delicious and tasted fresh. The coffee was excellent and prices were great! Glad I found this place!

PARKING We lucked out with street parking right in front. It's limited, and I can see it getting tight on weekends, but doable with patience. PASTRIES & CAKES PRINCESS CAKE - $6.50 I ordered this slice for my birthday, and it absolutely delivered. Alternating layers of airy sponge cake, vanilla custard, and house-made raspberry jam, topped with a dome of whipped cream and finished in light green almond paste. Every bite was balanced--rich but never cloying. Perfect texture, perfect sweetness. Rating: 5/5 RASPBERRY LEMON MOUSSE CAKE - $6.50 An indulgent combination of fresh raspberries and mousse layered with feather-light sponge cake brushed in lemon syrup. Finished with bits of raspberry-infused Valrhona chocolate, this cake hits that ideal sweet-tart balance. Bright, elegant, and not overly sweet--exactly how dessert should be. Rating: 5/5 SPANDAUER - $3.50 Understated and refined. Almond paste, custard, and crunchy almond flakes come together beautifully. Soft meets crisp in all the right ways. Rating: 4/5 KRINGLE - $3.50 A flaky pastry filled with almond paste and custard, topped with sugar and almond flakes. Simple, comforting, and executed perfectly. Excellent with coffee. Rating: 4.5/5 OVERALL Warm, friendly service paired with exceptional pastries and cakes. This place nails balance, flavor, and texture without relying on excess sweetness. I'll be back again and again.

My first time- with the high, beam-exposed ceiling and layout, has Joan's on Third vibes. No seating inside but plenty outdoors, although the closer to the entrance, you need to talk loudly above the music. I went late (to meet a friend) at 1pm. Few choices in the pastry section though it looked like they would replenish, which they barely did an hour later. Here's what I got: FRENCH SILK PIE - OMG, the chocolate mousse like filling was butter. Thick but light. The crust was dry and too thick but I could smother myself with the filling. PEANUT BUTTER HONEY RICE KRISPY - Very large, cereal was too compressed and dense. The pb flavor was fresh and natural but I did not taste honey. The marshmallow fluff on top was unnecessary but the few blobs inside the krispy was a nice textural difference. Both were $6 each. I can see why they can't sustain their business. Maybe because they're closing the bakery, they didn't want to bake excessively. But the middle tables have cute but overpriced novelties. There was a big table of just old fashioned Helms truck tins, filled with cookies for a mere $50. The prepackaged food might be good but was expensive. $12 for a small egg salad sandwich. The cured ham sandwich I noticed had deli meat ham. It's also inconvenient to wait in a separate line for coffee. That's where you can get soft serve btw. Sad to see Helms Bakery close. The parking lot with the painted mural and trick of the eye shading is so nostalgic. I will come back to finally try Pasta Sisters which is also in Helm's District. Best of luck to the owner and hope to see the bakery back in another form, maybe a food truck?
