I have serviced the alarm and while doing so was struck by the quality of works on offer as how polite and informative the staff are, bravo as I have visited quite a few in my time and I am pleased Lincoln has such a gem, needless to say I will be back with my family to inspire and admire. Absolutely lovely small fine arts gallery in Lincoln, adjacent to The Collection (an archaeological display of Lincolnshire). It is very typical of regional arts galleries in England, offering a mixed display of paintings, sculptures and arts & crafts objects. The picture collection is the most appealing part of it, offering a nice selection of mostly 19th century landscape and genre paintings, but there are also works by 20th century painters like L.S. Lowry. As you may expect, the "big" names in the history of painting are missing here, it's mostly devoted to artists and subjects of the area. The lighting in the rooms could be a bit brighter (no fear of damaging the paintings), and the explanatory tables next to the works a tad more illuminating. Clearly, the exhibition was designed quite a while ago. Entry is free of charge, and photography is allowed. read more

Set in lovely Temple Gardens and next to Greestone Stairs (An easier way to climb up to the Cathedral than Steep Hill especially in snow) the Usher is now free to get into. Monday - Sunday 10am - 5pm Paintings, sculpture, clocks and watches, porcelain, silver, enamels, miniatures and coins etc plus some interesting visiting exhibitions. Portraits and works of Lincolnshire artists are prominent and Lincolnshire born poet Laureate Lord Alfred Tennyson is rememebred in photo's, paintings and some of his clothes. There is a tiny temple in grounds and you can sirt or picnic on the grass but there is a cafe inside and a little shop. Good way to spend an hour or so. read more
