It's a…read moreshort walk from St. Olav's church and it's located on a small forested island, and is just inside the rocks where king Olav Tryggvason drowned a group of wizards one thousand years ago. We found a longhouse, a boat house for a Viking warship, a roundhouse and several smaller buildings. We were also treated to a reenactment of Viking life, including the stamping of coins. Outside the farmyard there were many paths for relaxing views of the countryside and the water.

The fortunate few of us who went on this shore excursion were transported back to the 1840s, situated near the harbor in an old timber building that was packed with artifacts from rural Skudeneshavn during the period where herring fishing flourished here, including fishing nets, a small boat, and a fish holding tank made of wood; a dentist's chair; a cobbler's shop; an intact furnished living room and bedrooms; many maritime objects; and all manner of appliances, such as primitive washing machines of the 1800s where rollers were a prominent feature. It was as if time stood still inside this building, and transported us to a faraway time and place. The tour was self-guided and unrushed, up and down via creaky staircases through several rooms filled with exhibits. Well-informed and helpful guides were available to answer questions. If in the vicinity of Skudeneshavn, I highly recommend visiting this museum.

I know there are a lot of museums around the city that are easy to get to, so this could be something you visit and spend a few hours in, easily.

The museum has artifacts from the end of the ice age to the medieval era, and every artifact and exhibit has descriptions in both English and Norwegian. The information is nicely presented, and they have some truly rare finds. If you are a fan of archaeology, then I would recommend the Arkeologisk Museum in Stavanger.

Until 25th of May you can catch "trough the woods" by Marit Victoria Wulff Andreassen. Amazing draws about sexuality. The museum is located a bit outside the town center, next to the lake Mosvannet. The location allows people who are taking a stroll around the lake to make a pitstop for a coffee or a waffle, so the café can be full even if the museum is empty. In summer they also put café tables outside!. They also have a museums shop. It is small but sells very nice things and offers a selection of cool books!

This includes deep sea oil platforms. It was amazing how the machines harvest the crude oil below. It also recorded the failure and burn down of the oil platforms. The museum also has the history how the oil was form. The children section seems very interactive and fun to play. The visit of this museum needs minimum 1.5 to 2.5 hours. It is worth the experience.

We were absolutely not planning on coming to the Maritime Museum in Stavanger. I had only planned…read moreon visiting one museum and one museum alone, but when we bought tickets to that museum, the person working gave us a list of museums that we now had free access to (and a couple that would give us discounted tickets.) Since we were going to walk by the Maritime Museum when we headed to the harbor, we decided to stop in. It was actually a great idea and I'm glad that we came by. Walking in, there is a cafe in the front, serving coffee and other drinks and light meals. The museum we had gone to before this had a full restaurant in it as well. I like this idea of museums and food/drink. The museum is laid out like a ship. The first floor was absolutely gorgeous with it's dark wood and ship accessories. The stairs leading up the stairs are a little tight because they are modeled like ones in a ship, but there is an elevator if you need to take it. The ship kind of led to an area that was like a merchants home in the past and that also led to an old time cafe, which they actually sold food and drink from as well! It was so cute and if I hadn't just eaten, I would have absolutely have had something. It was so cute! You could also enter this cafe from the street in the back. Overall, I'd absolutely recommend this museum.

Plenty of interesting stuff for Viking fans or metal heads to browse. Great little shop for tourists specifically and the owner was so friendly and helpful.
